- Highway to Hell: Hunting Evil Creatures with the Winchester BoysPublication . Lopes, ElisabeteSupernatural is a contemporary TV series that is rife with gothic undertones. The main characters, the Winchester boys, do not correspond to the usual hero prototype, who generally displays some type of super power. Actually, they are two brothers who ride in their black Impala (their true home) and believe to be on a mission to save people’s lives and do away with the monsters afflicting them. The only thing they carry in the boot of the Impala is a suitcase with holy water, salt, stakes and fake IDs. Sam and Dean (the Winchester brothers) did not have an ordinary childhood: from a young age they were introduced by their father to the hunter’s lifestyle. Moreover, their mother died at the hands of some mysterious yellow-eyed demon. In fact, Supernatural shows us that monsters abound in contemporary landscape: werewolves, ghosts, vampires, witches, and demons. In truth, all of these evil creatures can be said to mirror, to a certain extent, the fears tied in with the global crisis that the world is undergoing these days. In this light, we can say that the Winchester boys have some serious challenges ahead, since Supernatural showcases this crisis as a sign of an impending apocalypse. In addition, the brothers find out that one of them is doomed to be the vessel for the devil. Given the sinister omens that Supernatural hints at, it is then important to raise some questions: What kind of hero is liable to emerge in a dystopian world? What kind of metaphors do monsters embody? What challenges must these brothers ultimately face in order to stay alive in a predatory environment? These are some of the questions that this paper aims at addressing, in keeping with the idea that the gothic still works as a mirror for our daily fears and anxieties.
- IPS’ Technology and Industrial Management graduate course: a curriculum followup analysisPublication . Lourenço, Rodrigo Teixeira; Ferreira, Elsa; Duarte, Rogério; Gonçalves, Helena; Duarte, JoanaThe Technology and Industrial Management (T&IM) course of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS), Portugal, is a four year graduate course organized in trimesters with three course units per trimester [quarter]. In the last two trimesters [quarters] internships or real context projects prepare students for a smoother integration in the professional activity. From its beginning, in 2007, T&IM was designed for adults who develop a full-time professional activity in industrial companies, and needed to supplement their skills with those typical of managers and engineers. The b-learning methodology was adopted since it enabled the targeted students to better reconcile their academic, professional and family responsibilities. In 2010-2011 the first T&IM students concluded their graduate studies and, within IPS’ Integrated Management System, it was decided to monitor the suitability of the T&IM course curriculum. The following activities were undertaken: (a) data analysis, (b) satisfaction survey to current and graduate students, and (c ) focus groups with graduate students that had finished the course in 2010-2011. The data showed lower dropout numbers than those of IPS’ engineering courses. The survey showed good levels of satisfaction. Student satisfaction is high for curriculum related topics such as: (1) the course’s ability to develop transversal skills and (2) the course teaching methodology. Comparing graduate and current students survey results, the former group declares a higher overall satisfaction with the course. These results are consistent with those gathered from the focus group. During the focus group graduate students added that the skills acquired were comprehensive and appropriate to their understanding of how organizations actually operate. From the gathered results it is concluded that there is a good level of curriculum adequacy and student satisfaction, although there are “problem areas” and topics requiring further research.
- Witchcraft and ‘Bitchcraft’: A Portrayal of the Witch Character in American Horror Story: CovenPublication . Lopes, ElisabeteAmerican Horror Story: Coven (2013-2014) is an original TV series created by Ryan Murphy and Brian Falchuk that revolves around a group of witches who dwell in a private school owned and run by Cordelia. This teacher is the prototype of the good witch. She is also the daughter of Fiona Goode, the so-called ‘supreme’ among the witches’ community, meaning she is the most talented and powerful witch alive. This character, played on screen by Jessica Lange, is the most vivid embodiment of the evil mother that haunts traditional fairy tales: she is egocentric and her ultimate goal is to keep her physical appearance intact. Undoubtedly the universe within the series appears markedly feminine and overtly addresses gender issues which range from the traditional relation that femininity has with patriarchy to the way female characters are depicted in fairy tales. Within this framework, the purpose of this chapter is to examine how gender issues are dealt with in the series, namely the relation between peers, the bond between mothers and daughters, and the ways femininity develops taking into account the obstacles brought by the counter-power of patriarchy. In this context, it will be challenging to explore how the witch characters are grounded on female stereotypes and clichés, and how they express female anxieties and fears that have roots in the past and continue to afflict them in the present. This analysis also aims at exploring how the traditional fairy tale conventions are manipulated, parodied and subsequently integrated into the filmic narrative. In an original fashion, we can say that American Horror Story: Coven engenders an eerie atmosphere, offering the spectator a universe where the horrors of the past meet the terrors of the present in a harmonious and dark account.
- Social responsibility as an organizational strategy: what does it mean and how to do it?Publication . Swiatkiewicz, OlgierdThis paper raises the questions of the efforts and difficulties that we encounter when attempting to include social responsibility into the strategy of for-profit organizations. The paper consists of five parts. In the introduction, I discuss some aspects of the implementation of social responsibility in organizational strategy, the methodology adopted in this work and the main objectives of the paper. In the next section on the organization's strategy I only refer the general issues of strategy formation, aiming to generate the basic instruments of analysis, i.e. criteria of CSR analysis from the perspective of the organization's strategy. In the part related to social responsibility of organizations I discuss the evolution of this concept and some proposals for the use of CSR initiatives into the strategy of the organizations. Next, in the main part of the paper I present some theoretical proposals taken from subject literature and two of the many examples taken from practice, or how specific organizations have made the implementation of social responsibility into their organizational strategy. The paper finishes with endnotes, in which I discuss the issue of the limitations of this approach raised by different authors and a few personal reflections.
- Corporate governance e o desempenho das empresas em portugalPublication . Swiatkiewicz, OlgierdI examine aspects of the concept of corporate governance in general, related to Portugal in particular. The paper is based on literature review and the comparison of two annual reports of the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM, 2009, 2012) on corporate government in companies in Portugal. Its aim is to scrutinize the results of investigations on the relationship between corporate governance measures and company’s economic performance obtained in Portugal, and to compare the improvements in company’s compliance with the recommendations of the CMVM. Firstly, I discriminate the purpose, the objectives and the methodology of the study. Then I describe the assumptions of the issue of corporate governance. When approaching corporate governance in Portugal, I present an institutional measure at national level – the recommendations of Corporate Governance Code of the CMVM. I present the results of studies that attempt to relate some measures of corporate governance with the economic performance of companies, as well as the performance of Portuguese companies at the level of implementation of the measures of corporate governance with reference to the annual reports of the CMVM (2009, 2012). Finally I raise the question of the limitations of the approach and present some future developments.

- The role of general councils in the supervision of the organizational performance of higher education IistitutionsPublication . Lourenço, Rodrigues; Mano, MargaridaHigher Education Institutions (HEI), and other levels of Education, face important challenges. One of the most relevant one is the ability to adapt to a society that is changing over time, whilst guarantying levels of training that do not merely react to such changes. Thus, interacting with society, particularly with surrounding communities and key stakeholders, has become an essential requirement for the sustainability of these institutions. One of the formal mechanisms implemented in European educational institutions has been the design of organizational structures that include a top governance body sharing its constitution with both internal members, students and external members. Such frame holds the core mission of involving communities in the governance of educational institutions, assuming, both strategic decision-making functions, with the approval of the institutions’ strategic plans, and a supervision function, approved by activity reports. It also plays an essential role in the life of institutions by holding the responsibility of electing its top executives. In Portugal, it has been almost a decade since the publication of RJIES, the legal framework of Higher Education, such bodies being designated by General Councils. Thus, one may highlight that there has been a better understanding of the operative process of these bodies, as well as their added value to the education system. It has also been possible to analyse the extent to which their core mission has been fulfilled and to understand its growing relevance, particularly regarding the autonomy of institutions. This article aims to contribute to this theme by presenting the results of a study on the role of these bodies in the governance of Public Portuguese HEI, with a special focus on the supervisory competence of organizational performance. Through questionnaires made to board members and interviews with chairpersons of the bodies and top managers of the institutions, it was possible to conclude that there is a high concern with the connections to the external environment. However, regarding organizational performance and the role of the Council as a supervisor of that performance, the activity of the bodies has fallen short of what would be expected. Several reasons may be identified. It is important to emphasize the importance of the profile of the external members and the relationship between the organ’s standard functioning and the election of the head of the institution.
- Market Communication: Ethical and Praxeological Dimensions.Publication . Swiatkiewicz, OlgierdCommunication is one of the main organizational processes and at the same time one of the four basic marketing variables. Apart from some specific aspects of interpersonal communication, in this paper, we focus on the key issues of communication with the market and its stakeholders, because it determines the sales of products and services in a competitive environment, and consequently affects the income and profit of the company. The main aspect of communication with the market is its effectiveness (including the issues of ineffectiveness and/or countereffective action) and the relationship of expenditures and revenues (efficiency, etc.), i.e. the praxeological dimension. From the beginning of marketing, the ethical aspect of communication has also arisen some doubts which are still on the table. In recent times, the area was dominated by the issue of corporate social responsibility (CSR). In this article, we address numerous issues of communication with the market, but it is far from being exhaustive. The basic method adopted here is a review of the literature in this field.
