- An information systems for infrastructure asset management tailored to portuguese water utilities: platform conceptualization and a prototype demonstrationPublication . Carriço, Nelson; Ferreira, Bruno; Antunes, André; Grueau, Cédric; Barreira, Raquel; Mendes, Ana; Covas, Dídia; Monteiro, Laura; Santos, João; Brito, Isabel S.This paper presents a new information technology platform specially tailored for infrastructure asset management of urban water systems operated by water utilities of lower digital maturity level, developed in the scope of DECIdE research project. This platform aims at the integration of different data from the water utilities with several information systems and the assessment of the system performance, in terms of water losses, energy efficiency and quality of service by using developed tools (i.e., water and energy balances and key performance indicators). This platform was tested with data from five small to medium size Portuguese water utilities with different maturity levels in terms of technological and human resources. Obtained results are very promising since the platform allows to assess the systems performance periodically which constitute an important part of the infrastructure asset management for small and medium-sized water utilities

- Assessment for learning in Norway and PortugalPublication . Nortvedt, Guri A.; Santos, Leonor; Pinto, JorgeIn this study, we aim to understand the forces driving assessment for learning (AfL) in primary school teaching. By applying a case study design, including the two cases of Norway and Portugal and using mathematics teaching as an example, available policy documents and research reports are analysed to identify the differences and similarities that might explain the assessment practices previously observed in the two countries. Many similarities are found at the school and national levels. In particular, AfL is introduced as a national policy in both countries. Still, AfL practices are not common in primary mathematics classrooms in either country, although this is true for different reasons in each country. It is suggested that the assessment culture caused by national policies, such as curriculum reforms, national professional development projects and teacher autonomy, explains the similarities in the observed outcomes.
- Automatic level generation for platform videogames using genetic algorithmsPublication . Mourato, Fausto; Santos, Manuel Próspero dos; Birra, FernandoIn this document we present an investigation on automatically generating levels for platform videogames. Common approaches for this problem are rhythm based, where input patterns are transformed in a valid geometry, and chunk based, where samples are humanly created and automatically assembled like a puzzle. The proposal hereby presented is to explore this challenge with the usage of Genetic Algorithms, facing it as a search problem, in order to achieve higher expressivity and less linearity than in rhythm based approach and without requiring human creation as it happens with the chunk based approach. With simple heuristics the system is able to generate playable levels in a small amount of time (one level is created in less than a minute) and with considerable diversity, as our results show.
- Combining models in supervised classification: New developmentsPublication . Ferreira, Ana Sousa; Marques, Anabela; Cardoso, MargaridaIn Discrete Discriminant Analysis dimensionality problems often occur. In this context, we propose a combining models approach, taking profit from several potential models. In the bi-class case, a single combination coefficient is considered and estimated using several strategies. In the multi-class case, the decomposition into several bi-class problems embedded in a binary tree is implemented. New developments of this approach are presented and their performances assessed on real or simulated data.
