Swiatkiewicz, OlgierdI examine aspects of the concept of corporate governance in general, related to Portugal in particular. The paper is based on literature review and the comparison of two annual reports of the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM, 2009, 2012) on corporate government in companies in Portugal. Its aim is to scrutinize the results of investigations on the relationship between corporate governance measures and company’s economic performance obtained in Portugal, and to compare the improvements in company’s compliance with the recommendations of the CMVM. Firstly, I discriminate the purpose, the objectives and the methodology of the study. Then I describe the assumptions of the issue of corporate governance. When approaching corporate governance in Portugal, I present an institutional measure at national level – the recommendations of Corporate Governance Code of the CMVM. I present the results of studies that attempt to relate some measures of corporate governance with the economic performance of companies, as well as the performance of Portuguese companies at the level of implementation of the measures of corporate governance with reference to the annual reports of the CMVM (2009, 2012). Finally I raise the question of the limitations of the approach and present some future developments.
- Ecossistemas empreendedores: estudo de casoPublication . Valente, Fernando; Dantas, José; Brito, Mónica Morais deThe promotion of conditions that stimulate the emergence of new companies, support their rapid growth and their innovative capacity has been deserving special attention from several public and private entities. This interest is based on the expectation of business and social regeneration and the economic growth of the regions where these new companies are created. The conditions for its formation and growth depend on a set of actors who often include universities, investors, incubators, public entities, among others. Academically speaking, this finding culminated in an emerging approach of the entrepreneurial ecosystem which focuses on understanding how contexts affect entrepreneurship. This article aims to understand the relationship between entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial ecosystems, and how these phenomena attempt to explain the creation of new companies. The main objective of this article is to explain how different configurations of the ecosystem (Coimbra and Sines) produce results with its own specificities and characteristics.

- Empreendedorismo estilo de vida: uma realidade diferente?Publication .
- Highway to Hell: Hunting Evil Creatures with the Winchester BoysPublication . Lopes, ElisabeteSupernatural is a contemporary TV series that is rife with gothic undertones. The main characters, the Winchester boys, do not correspond to the usual hero prototype, who generally displays some type of super power. Actually, they are two brothers who ride in their black Impala (their true home) and believe to be on a mission to save people’s lives and do away with the monsters afflicting them. The only thing they carry in the boot of the Impala is a suitcase with holy water, salt, stakes and fake IDs. Sam and Dean (the Winchester brothers) did not have an ordinary childhood: from a young age they were introduced by their father to the hunter’s lifestyle. Moreover, their mother died at the hands of some mysterious yellow-eyed demon. In fact, Supernatural shows us that monsters abound in contemporary landscape: werewolves, ghosts, vampires, witches, and demons. In truth, all of these evil creatures can be said to mirror, to a certain extent, the fears tied in with the global crisis that the world is undergoing these days. In this light, we can say that the Winchester boys have some serious challenges ahead, since Supernatural showcases this crisis as a sign of an impending apocalypse. In addition, the brothers find out that one of them is doomed to be the vessel for the devil. Given the sinister omens that Supernatural hints at, it is then important to raise some questions: What kind of hero is liable to emerge in a dystopian world? What kind of metaphors do monsters embody? What challenges must these brothers ultimately face in order to stay alive in a predatory environment? These are some of the questions that this paper aims at addressing, in keeping with the idea that the gothic still works as a mirror for our daily fears and anxieties.
- IPS’ Technology and Industrial Management graduate course: a curriculum followup analysisPublication . Lourenço, Rodrigo Teixeira; Ferreira, Elsa; Duarte, Rogério; Gonçalves, Helena; Duarte, JoanaThe Technology and Industrial Management (T&IM) course of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS), Portugal, is a four year graduate course organized in trimesters with three course units per trimester [quarter]. In the last two trimesters [quarters] internships or real context projects prepare students for a smoother integration in the professional activity. From its beginning, in 2007, T&IM was designed for adults who develop a full-time professional activity in industrial companies, and needed to supplement their skills with those typical of managers and engineers. The b-learning methodology was adopted since it enabled the targeted students to better reconcile their academic, professional and family responsibilities. In 2010-2011 the first T&IM students concluded their graduate studies and, within IPS’ Integrated Management System, it was decided to monitor the suitability of the T&IM course curriculum. The following activities were undertaken: (a) data analysis, (b) satisfaction survey to current and graduate students, and (c ) focus groups with graduate students that had finished the course in 2010-2011. The data showed lower dropout numbers than those of IPS’ engineering courses. The survey showed good levels of satisfaction. Student satisfaction is high for curriculum related topics such as: (1) the course’s ability to develop transversal skills and (2) the course teaching methodology. Comparing graduate and current students survey results, the former group declares a higher overall satisfaction with the course. These results are consistent with those gathered from the focus group. During the focus group graduate students added that the skills acquired were comprehensive and appropriate to their understanding of how organizations actually operate. From the gathered results it is concluded that there is a good level of curriculum adequacy and student satisfaction, although there are “problem areas” and topics requiring further research.
