- Beyond the code: understanding professional users' perspectives on AI implementationPublication . Castro, Marcela; Lisboa, Leonardo; Barcaui, AndreWhile Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to amplify economic productivity, and reduce expenses, it concurrently triggers investigations into the socially acceptable boundaries of its implementation. This study aims to promote a deeper comprehension of this issue by elucidating a better comprehension of actual AI usage for the professional proposes, the perceptions, the main risks, and the expectations for future usage on the lens of the professional users. The research commences with a descriptive and literature-driven exploration. Subsequently, it the foundational phase conducts an exploratory investigation via semi-structured interviews to managers and analysts who utilizes AI for professional purposes. Differentiation in usage was observed based on each participant's specific needs, ranging from text improvement to decision-making and programming. This study revealed patterns of usage, such as: perceptions, expectations, evaluations of AI's potential, as well as associated risks and concerns
- Improving Urban Food Markets as a Local Sustainable Meeting PointPublication . Xara-Brasil, Duarte; Pardal, Pedro; Cordeiro, João Pedro Pina; Carvalho, Luísa Margarida CagicaUrban food markets are considered as catalyzers of regional development and central places for promoting sustainability through the short cycles between the farm and the plate. This paper aims to identify mechanisms for improving the performance of an urban food market, con- sidering an extended internal and external analysis. This includes competitive pressure and op- portunities and their specific constraints on maximizing its relations with the region's inhabitants and simultaneously promoting the local economy and sustainable behaviors and policies in the community. This is a case study carried out using a qualitative approach with different key play- ers from one of the most important fish markets in the world – Mercado do Livramento in Setúbal (Portugal). The conclusions reinforce the need to preserve its authenticity, through the attraction, satisfaction, and improvement of loyalty rates of local customers, while also reaching a different public and increasing its regional, national, and international attractiveness. To a large extent, this action will involve investing in improving the value proposition of merchants and promoting exclusive experiences, focused on products and people, which is in line with the goals of sustain- able development.

- Reflective thinking and experiential learning: a quasi-experimental quanti-quali response to greater diversification of activities, greater integration of student profilesPublication . Bogas, Paulo Sérgio Ribeiro de AraújoAlthough several studies have assumed (at least implicitly) that learners' approaches to learning develop into deeper approaches to higher education, there appears to be no clear theoretical basis for this assumption and no empirical evidence. As a scientific contribution to this discussion, a pedagogical intervention of a quasi experimental nature was developed, with a mixed methodology, evaluating the intervention within a single curricular unit of Marketing, using cases based on real challenges of brands, business simulation and customer projects. Primary and secondary experiences were incorporated in the intervention: the primary experiences are the experiential activities themselves; the secondary experiences resulted from the primary experience, such as reflection and discussion in work teams. A diversified learning relationships was encouraged through the various connections between the different members of the learning community. The present study concludes that in the same context, the students' response can be described as: students who reinforce the initial deep approach, students who maintain the initial deep approach level and others who change from an emphasis on the deep approach to one closer to superficial. This typology did not always confirm studies reported in the literature, namely, whether the initial level of deep processing would influence the superficial and the opposite. The result of this investigation points to the inclusion of pedagogical and didactic activities that integrate different motivations and initial strategies, leading to a possible adoption of deep approaches to learning, since it revealed statistically significant differences in the difference in the scores of the deep/superficial approach and the experiential level. In the case of real challenges, the categories of “attribution of meaning and meaning of studied” and the possibility of “contact with an aspirational context” for their future professional stand out. In this category, the dimensions of autonomy that will be required of them were also revealed when comparing the classroom context of real cases and the future professional context and the impact they may have on the world. Regarding to the simulated practice, two categories of response stand out: on the one hand, the motivation associated with the possibility of measuring the results of the decisions taken, an awareness of oneself and, on the other hand, the additional effort that this practice required for some of the students.
- The Impact of YouTube and TikTok Influencers in the Customer Journey: An Empirical Comparative Study Among Generation Z UsersPublication . Silveira, Paulo Duarte; Sandes, Fábio; Xara-Brasil, DuarteThe present paper aims to analyse the impact of YouTubers and TikTokers influencers in the customer journey phases, among Generation Z users. To do so, a quantitative deductive empirical study was carried out. The respective data collection was made via an online questionnaire survey, obtaining a valid sample of 529 participants. The results show that both type of influencers might influence the customer journey, but mainly in the first stages of the process. It was also found that YouTubers tend to have a higher influence in each of those stages than TikTokers. Although the topic of social media influencers is growing significantly and has already been studied, no similar study was found addressing separately the stages of the customer journey decision-making process, neither comparing influencer of both platforms in that context
- The implementation of an open-source ERP online solution to support laboratory classes and students assessment in higher education during Covid-19 lockdownPublication . Batista, Carlos; Alves, CarlosThis article describes the implementation of an online Open-Source Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software solution to support the laboratory component of the theoretical/laboratory classes of the curricular unit “Information and Communication Technologies in Distribution and Logistics Management” of the degree in “Distribution and Logistics Management” and its contribution to the student assessment process, during the Covid-19 lockdown and resulting restrictions imposed to the normal functioning of presential classroom lessons in the period 2020-2022. The curricular unit's program foresees the use of demonstrative and experimental methods to illustrate the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) support to the fundamental area of the study cycle. An ERP software solution and a database from a simulation company are normally used in classroom-based classes to carry out laboratory exercises, where it is intended to highlight the role of ICT as a facilitator of supply chain processes and logistical activities. The objective of implementing this online solution was to continue to ensure the teaching of the laboratory component, which was initially limited to use in the classroom. It was thus possible to continue helping students to develop their knowledge and practical technical experience in accordance with the curricular unit ́s program. The technological implementation of the solution and the training of the teachers involved had to be carried out in a very short period. From a methodological point of view, an approach based on experiential learning was used and the ePortfolio, as instrument to assess the practical knowledge acquired. Demonstrations of the system with resolution of synchronous online laboratory exercises, online debate and clarification sessions, recordings with resolution of laboratory exercises for asynchronous viewing and the proposal of exercises to be integrated in the ePortfolio were used. This article details the laboratory structure that was developed, taught, and evaluated to the students of the 2nd year of the degree course, at the School of Business Administration of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal, in Portugal. The results of the students assessment in the laboratory component were positive, and the proposed solution contributed to the conclusion of the curricular unit. The ERP OPEN-Source solution was also evaluated by the students through a survey, and the results revealed a positive impact of the approach in the acquisition of knowledge and practical technical experience.
- How can customer experience improve retail operations sustainability?Publication . Silva e Sousa, Rita; Pinho, Tiago; Simões, DavidConsumer needs drive supply chains, so they are arguably the main actors in the process. Nonetheless, consumers are unaware of their ability to con tribute to stock management and the sustainability of retail operations, from the reduction of stockouts and waste to the minimization of energy-environmental impacts, through the centralization of stock in distribution and consolidation of last mile delivery in pooling systems. For this to happen, companies must provide channels that allow consumers to actively participate in the process and negotiate delivery times and prices through sustainable purchase options, through a crowdsourcing strategy in phygital stores. This paper explores two alternative strategies, maintaining or changing the current physical retail business model, based on the increase in online commerce and the use of mobile devices and ap plications in the purchase process. The first is applied in physical stores in a gam ing context through a consumer-facing augmented reality mobile application that rewards users for identifying stockouts and informing the need to replace prod ucts in the shelves. The second involves the transformation of physical stores into a showroom format, where desired products are read through a QR Code or using artificial intelligence through a mobile application, in which virtual shopping carts are created and deliveries can be fulfilled via home distribution centers, col lection points or drive-in
- Influence of non-commercial recommendations on store-choice criteria: an empirical studyPublication . Silveira, Paulo Duarte; Galvão, Susana C. BritoThe present study explores the impact of non-commercial recommendation sources on store attributes salience and store choice for electronics bricks-and-mortar retailing. For that purpose, an empirical exploratory quantitative study was conducted, using face-to-face interviews with a sample of 555 store actual customers. In the quantitative hypothesis testing, we correlated the store-attributes saliences with a list of non-commercial recommendation sources eventually used by the customer to choose that particular store. The results revealed several positive correlations, and each recommendation source analyzed obtained between five to thirteen positive significant correlations, out of fifteen possible. The most expressive correlations found were between the following pairs of attributes/recommendations sources: the store attribute "cozy/elegant" and the recommendation sources "other customers", "third parties" and "friends or family"; the attribute "possibility to choose between different models of one product" with the sources "friends or family", "third parties" and "other customers"; the attribute "the store carries the latest products" with the sources "other customers", "friends or family" and "third parties”.
- Shopper centric category management in convenience stores: a qualitative studyPublication . Silveira, Paulo Duarte; Marreiros, Cristina GalambaThe literature shows that category management is an important concept and tool for retailers and suppliers, but that there is a trend to move to a more shopper-centric category management approach, linked to the shopper marketing approach. However, the knowledge on this issue is scarce on some retailing sectors, like convenience stores. The present study is focused on convenience stores, with the main purpose of finding out to what extent non-major food retailers successfully adopt a shopper-centric category management. The study is relevant in order to evaluate if a more shopper-centric approach is adequate to smaller companies/stores. To accomplish that goal, an exploratory qualitative study was conducted among convenience store retailers and suppliers. Six semi structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with Commercial Directors and Trade Marketing Managers. This data was complemented with thirteen interviews with shopper marketing experts. The data was analyzed using thematic content analysis technique, identifying themes, categories, subcategories, units of meaning and relations. The results revealed that convenience store retailers use some of the principles and techniques of the shopper-marketing and shopper-centric category management approaches, which they do in a non-standardized and non-formal approach or process. Their suppliers (the manufacturers) do it in a more formal and structured manner, probably as a result of previous interaction with major supermarkets chains. Both direct and indirect evidences of a shopper-centric approach were found, which, however, were slight, discrete and not formal.
- Teaching methodologies for new information technologiesPublication . Catarino, JoãoNew Information Technologies is a course whose curriculum was developed to fill the need of teaching students with more recent and emerging topics in information technologies. The novelty is the approach taken to group in a single course numerous loosely related subjects and a hybrid problem-based learning teaching methodology. Preliminary empirical evidence encourages us to continue pursuing this approach and we believe that our experiences may help other teachers designing their courses’ teaching methodology.
