- Adverse childhood experiences, symptomatology and positive thoughts in sex offenders and the general populationPublication . Proença, Joana Margarida Pita; Almeida, TelmaBackground: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) include situations of family dysfunction and/or victimization, which are often related to depressive, anxiety and stress symptoms in adulthood. Positive thoughts can reduce the levels of these symptoms. Objectives: Compare a sample of sex offenders and a sample of the general population in terms of ACEs, symptomatology and positive thoughts and analyze the relationship between these variables. Participants The sample includes adult males, 168 serving time for sex crimes, aged between 23 and 84, and 213 from the general population aged between 19 and 77. Method: Application of a sociodemographic questionnaire, Adverse Childhood Experiences, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale and Positive Thinking Skills Scale (PTSS). Results: Negative correlations were observed between PTSS and ACEs in offenders, and between PTSS, ACEs and depression in the general population. Sex offenders have higher ACEs and DASS scores compared to the general population. Child sex offenders have higher scores on the parental divorce subscale, while rapists have higher levels of PTSS. Linear regression revealed that marital status and the presence of mental illness or suicide in the family are predictors of symptomatology, while emotional neglect is also a significant predictor of stress. Conclusion: The study highlights the impact of ACEs on symptomatology in adulthood and the differences between the general population and sex offenders in some of the variables studied. This study reinforces the need for a comprehensive approach to preventing crime.
- Childhood experiences, adult trauma, and psychoemotional factors : a comparative study between first responders and the general populationPublication . Matos, Ana Francisca Mália; Almeida, TelmaBackground: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with increased vulnerability to trauma, emotional regulation difficulties (ERD), and general poorer mental health. In contrast, positive childhood experiences (PCEs) play a protective role, promoting the development of adequate emotional regulation and mental health. In first responders (FRs), the cumulative impact of trauma can be amplified. Objectives: This research analyzes the associations between ACEs, PCEs, and psychoemotional factors, comparing FRs with the general population, and examines the prevalence and impact of childhood experiences and adult trauma on both outcomes. Participants: The sample consists of 296 Portuguese participants (149 from the general population, aged 18 to 68, and 147 FRs, aged 20 to 63. Method: An investigation protocol was used, with a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (ACE), the Benevolent Childhood Experiences Scale (BCEs), the Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale – Short Form (DERS-SF), the Brief Symptom Inventory 18 (BSI-18), a Traumatic Events Checklist (TEC), and a Risk Exposure Checklist (REC). Results: This research reveals positive correlations between ACEs and ERD, symptomatology, exposure to adult trauma, and its impact, and negative correlations between PCEs and ACEs, ERD, and symptomatology. In FRs, occupational trauma is also positively linked with ACEs, exposure to adult trauma, and its impact. The general population shows more ERD and symptomatology, while FRs show more child physical abuse and a higher exposure to adult trauma and its impact. Age, some ACEs, PCEs, and the impact of traumatic events are predictors of ERD. Age, some ACEs, and some ERD dimensions predict the impact of traumatic events. Moreover, age, sex, socioeconomic status, emotional neglect, PCEs, and the impact of traumatic events are predictors of symptomatology. PCEs moderate the relationship between ERD and the impact of traumatic events in FRs. PCEs also moderate the link between ACEs and symptomatology and the relationship between trauma in adulthood and symptomatology among the general population. Conclusion: These findings highlight the role of ACEs, PCEs, and trauma on ERD and mental health, emphasizing some differences regarding both populations. This research underscores the need to explore and develop tailored prevention and intervention measures to reduce ACEs, ERD, and symptomatology and to promote PCEs, thereby enhancing the mental health of individuals.
- Grooming online, sexting, non-consensual dissemination of intimate images, and social anxiety in portuguese adolescentsPublication . Dias, Bia Patrícia Fernandes; Almeida, TelmaIntroduction: The constant use of digital technologies among adolescents has increased young people’s exposure to multiple forms of online sexual victimization, such as online grooming, sexting, and non-consensual dissemination of intimate images (NCII). Despite having existing research on this subject, there still remains a lack of investigation into their relationship with social anxiety, especially across the different dimensions of this construct. Objectives: From a One Health perspective, which acknowledges the interconnected influence of individual, social, and environmental factors on health and well-being, this study aimed to analyze the prevalence of online grooming victimization, sexting, and NCII victimization among Portuguese adolescents and the associations among online grooming, NCII, sexting, and social anxiety. It also sought to compare victims and non-victims of online grooming and NCII, and girls and boys, as well as analyze the predictors of social anxiety, online grooming, and the NCII. Method: The sample comprised 269 Portuguese adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years. The participants completed the Questionnaire on Online Sexual Solicitation and Adolescent Interaction (QOSSIA), the Sexting Questionnaire (SQ), the Checklist for Victimization by Non-Consensual Dissemination of Intimate Images, and the Social Anxiety Scale for Children (SASC-R). Results: Positive correlations were found between sexting, online grooming, and NCII. Only the fear of negative evaluation was associated with solicitations for online grooming. Sexting emerged as the main predictor of both victimization by online grooming and victimization by NCII. Furthermore, younger age and higher levels of fear of negative evaluation were identified as significant predictors of online grooming victimization. Regarding the differences between biological sexes, girls reported higher levels of social anxiety, avoidance, and social discomfort. Conclusion: Overall, the results highlight that online sexual victimization must not be viewed as a standalone phenomenon, but instead as a complex experience influenced by many factors. This research highlights the importance of prevention and intervention strategies that promote online safety and adolescents' psychological well-being.
- Impact of interparental conflict on emotional regulation and happiness in adolescentsPublication . Fernandes, Mariana Rodrigues; Almeida, TelmaIntroduction: Adolescence is an emotionally demanding period, marked by the consolidation of emotion regulation processes. Within this context, the impact of iinterparental conflict has been linked to poorer emotional adjustment in adolescents, particularly when it is perceived as threatening or poorly resolved, or when the adolescent is directly involved in the conflicts. Objectives: The present study analyzed the relationship between interparental conflict, emotion regulation, and happiness in adolescents, compared boys and girls as well as two age groups, and identified the predictors of happiness. Method: The study included 100 adolescents (56 girls, 44 boys) aged 12 to 17 years, who completed three questionnaires assessing the variables under study (Children's Perceptions of Interparental Conflict Scale – CPIC, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire – CERQ, and Subjective Happiness Scale). Results: The results showed that adolescents perceived interparental conflict mainly through perceived threat and triangulation, with low levels of conflict resolution, and tended to rely on adaptive emotion regulation strategies. Happiness was related to emotion regulation, particularly rumination and positive reappraisal, which emerged as the only significant predictors in the regression model, and was also associated with the content of interparental conflicts. No significant differences were found by biological sex or age group. Conclusion: The results suggest that adolescents' happiness is related to how they regulate their emotions and to the nature of their conflicts, which may also be relevant to adolescents' well-being. These findings suggest that it may be important to intervene at the level of adolescents' emotion regulation. This study falls within the scope of the One Health approach, recognizing adolescent health as part of a broader context shaped by interpersonal relationships and the family environment.
- Impact of youth victimization on affective lability in adults : a comparative study between inmates and the normative populationPublication . Fernandes, Raquel Margarida Alves; Almeida, TelmaBackground: Child victimization is a major concern in society, with emotional lability being one of its consequences. Individuals who have suffered victimization have higher levels of emotional lability and inmates have more emotional problems, compared to the normative population, although no studies are evaluating this prevalence in inmates. Objectives Analyze the factorial structure, the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Affective Lability Scale – short version (ALS-18) and test the gender invariance. Assess the relationship between traumatic experiences and emotional lability, and check whether there are differences between inmates and the normative population. Participants: The first paper contemplates 1886 Portuguese adults, between 18-91 years old (M = 36.36, SD = 13.66). The second paper has 1281 participants: 978 from the normative population, between 18-91 years (M = 41.44, SD = 13.30) and 303 from the inmates, between 20-70 years (M = 38.28, SD = 10.33). Method: They responded on paper and online to a protocol composed of a sociodemographic questionnaire, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - short version (CTQ-SF), and ALS-18. Results: The Portuguese version of ALS-18 revealed good psychometric properties, with discriminant validity, convergent validity, and internal consistency, a good adjustment, and gender invariance were determined. Inmates identify higher levels of childhood trauma and emotional lability. Traumatic childhood experiences predict emotional lability. Conclusion: It was possible to validate ALS-18 in the Portuguese population, being important to evaluate this concept in Portugal. Child victimization experiences are present in most of the sample, being related to the prevalence of emotional lability.
