  • The link between childhood experiences, personality, intimate partner violence, and non-consensual intimate image-sharing
Publication . Pereira, Ana Rita Antunes; Almeida, Telma
Introduction: Childhood experiences, which include Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs), play a central role in shaping psychological development and interpersonal functioning throughout life. From a One Health perspective, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of individual, relational, and social well-being, it is essential to understand how early family environments influence vulnerability to victimization in adulthood, including intimate partner violence (IPV) and the non-consensual intimate image sharing (NCIIS). This dissertation examines the relationships between ACEs, PCEs, personality traits, and experiences of victimization in adulthood. Methods: The study included a sample of 382 Portuguese adults who completed self-report instruments to assess ACEs, PCEs, personality traits, IPV, and NCIIS. Data were analyzed using correlational analyses, between-group comparisons, and linear regression models to examine associations among variables and identify predictors of personality and victimization. Results: The results consistently show that ACEs are associated with more maladaptive personality profiles, characterized by higher neuroticism and lower extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. ACEs also emerged as significant risk factors for victimization by IPV and NCIIS, suggesting that early adversity may contribute to greater vulnerability to forms of victimization in adulthood. On the other hand, positive childhood experiences (PCEs) may play a protective role, as they are associated with greater emotional stability, higher levels of extraversion and agreeableness, and lower levels of neuroticism, even among individuals exposed to adversity. The results also indicated a significant overlap between different forms of victimization in adulthood, suggesting cumulative and interconnected trajectories of revictimization across the life course. Conclusions: ACEs and PCEs interact in personality development and influence vulnerability to IPV and NCIIS. These results highlight the importance of preventive and intervention strategies that reduce childhood adversity and actively promote positive relational contexts, with potential long-term benefits for mental health.
  • Online grooming, sexting, non-consensual dissemination of intimate images and emotional regulation in adolescents
Publication . Fernandes, Ana Sofia Marques Coelho; Almeida, Telma
Background: As technology evolves, teenagers are exposed to risky environments, making them more susceptible to online victimization. Online victimization can be perpetrated by adults, particularly through grooming, which may involve sexting. Sexting can be beneficial; however, it can also be used as a form of threat and subsequently disseminated by both the groomer and peers. These types of victimization impact the emotional regulation of adolescents during their developmental process. Objectives: Analyze the relationship between online grooming, sexting, non-consensual dissemination of intimate images (NCDII), and emotional regulation; compare victims and non-victims of online grooming and NCDII regarding experiences of grooming, NCDII, sexting, and emotional regulation; and analyze the predictors of adolescents' emotional regulation strategies. Method: A sociodemographic questionnaire, the Questionnaire for Online Sexual Solicitation and Interactions with Adults, the Sexting Questionnaire, the Non-Consensual Dissemination of Intimate Images Checklist, and the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire short version. Results: Positive correlations were found between sexting, grooming, NCDII, and certain emotional regulation strategies. Victims of grooming exhibit higher levels of NCDII, sexting, and certain emotional regulation strategies. Victims of NCDII exhibit higher levels of grooming, sexting, and certain emotional regulation strategies. Age, gender, sexual orientation, and NCDII are predictors of emotional regulation strategies. Conclusion: This study provides insight into the relationship between grooming, sexting, and NCDII and their contribution to adolescents’ emotional regulation, as well as the differences between victim and non-victim groups. It is important to understand how emotional regulation influences vulnerability to technology-facilitated sexual violence, contributing to healthier digital environments and to the promotion of mental health within a One Health framework.
  • Impact of interparental conflict on emotional regulation and happiness in adolescents
Publication . Fernandes, Mariana Rodrigues; Almeida, Telma
Introduction: Adolescence is an emotionally demanding period, marked by the consolidation of emotion regulation processes. Within this context, the impact of iinterparental conflict has been linked to poorer emotional adjustment in adolescents, particularly when it is perceived as threatening or poorly resolved, or when the adolescent is directly involved in the conflicts. Objectives: The present study analyzed the relationship between interparental conflict, emotion regulation, and happiness in adolescents, compared boys and girls as well as two age groups, and identified the predictors of happiness. Method: The study included 100 adolescents (56 girls, 44 boys) aged 12 to 17 years, who completed three questionnaires assessing the variables under study (Children's Perceptions of Interparental Conflict Scale – CPIC, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire – CERQ, and Subjective Happiness Scale). Results: The results showed that adolescents perceived interparental conflict mainly through perceived threat and triangulation, with low levels of conflict resolution, and tended to rely on adaptive emotion regulation strategies. Happiness was related to emotion regulation, particularly rumination and positive reappraisal, which emerged as the only significant predictors in the regression model, and was also associated with the content of interparental conflicts. No significant differences were found by biological sex or age group. Conclusion: The results suggest that adolescents' happiness is related to how they regulate their emotions and to the nature of their conflicts, which may also be relevant to adolescents' well-being. These findings suggest that it may be important to intervene at the level of adolescents' emotion regulation. This study falls within the scope of the One Health approach, recognizing adolescent health as part of a broader context shaped by interpersonal relationships and the family environment.
  • Grooming online, sexting, non-consensual dissemination of intimate images, and social anxiety in portuguese adolescents
Publication . Dias, Bia Patrícia Fernandes; Almeida, Telma
Introduction: The constant use of digital technologies among adolescents has increased young people’s exposure to multiple forms of online sexual victimization, such as online grooming, sexting, and non-consensual dissemination of intimate images (NCII). Despite having existing research on this subject, there still remains a lack of investigation into their relationship with social anxiety, especially across the different dimensions of this construct. Objectives: From a One Health perspective, which acknowledges the interconnected influence of individual, social, and environmental factors on health and well-being, this study aimed to analyze the prevalence of online grooming victimization, sexting, and NCII victimization among Portuguese adolescents and the associations among online grooming, NCII, sexting, and social anxiety. It also sought to compare victims and non-victims of online grooming and NCII, and girls and boys, as well as analyze the predictors of social anxiety, online grooming, and the NCII. Method: The sample comprised 269 Portuguese adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years. The participants completed the Questionnaire on Online Sexual Solicitation and Adolescent Interaction (QOSSIA), the Sexting Questionnaire (SQ), the Checklist for Victimization by Non-Consensual Dissemination of Intimate Images, and the Social Anxiety Scale for Children (SASC-R). Results: Positive correlations were found between sexting, online grooming, and NCII. Only the fear of negative evaluation was associated with solicitations for online grooming. Sexting emerged as the main predictor of both victimization by online grooming and victimization by NCII. Furthermore, younger age and higher levels of fear of negative evaluation were identified as significant predictors of online grooming victimization. Regarding the differences between biological sexes, girls reported higher levels of social anxiety, avoidance, and social discomfort. Conclusion: Overall, the results highlight that online sexual victimization must not be viewed as a standalone phenomenon, but instead as a complex experience influenced by many factors. This research highlights the importance of prevention and intervention strategies that promote online safety and adolescents' psychological well-being.
  • College life : genetic polymorphism, personality, alcohol use and aggression
Publication . Bryant-Jorge, Gonçalo; Soeiro, Cristina; Baúto, Ricardo
This research investigates the impact of serotonin transporter (5-HTTLPR) and dopamine transporter (DAT1) genetic polymorphisms, as well as personality traits (Big Five and impulsivity), on alcohol consumption and aggression in a sample of Portuguese university students. Sixty participants (28.3% male, 71.7% female; mean age = 20.73) completed validated psychological inventories, including the NEO-Five Factor Inventory-3 (NEO-FFI-3) for Big Five personality assessment, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-15 (BIS-15) for impulsivity, and the Reactive/Proactive Aggression Questionnaire (RPQ) for aggression. DNA samples were collected for genetic analysis. Results show that the 5-HTTLPR S allele is significantly associated with higher neuroticism, while higher impulsivity and lower agreeableness predict increased proactive aggression. No significant associations were observed between genetic variants or personality traits and alcohol consumption. Furthermore, gene–personality interactions did not significantly predict aggression or alcohol use. These findings suggest that, in this population, personality traits are more strongly linked to aggression than the examined genetic factors, and that neither these genetic markers nor the Big Five traits are robust predictors of alcohol consumption in university settings. Limitations, including sample size and reliance on self-report, are discussed, and directions for future research are proposed.
Publication . Dias, Raquel Maria Gonçalves; Soeiro, Cristina; Gonçalves, Marta Matos
The present work is a systematic review aimed at identifying and comparing risk factors for criminal recidivism among child sexual exploitation material (CSEM) offenders and mixed offenders, as well as critically analyzing the main risk assessment instruments applied to these groups. Twenty-four articles, selected in accordance with the PRISMA protocol, were reviewed, ensuring methodological rigor and scientific quality. The research, predominantly originating from Canada, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Germany, reveals that fifteen studies compare risk profiles between CSEM and mixed offenders, eight focus on risk assessment instruments, and one deals exclusively with CSEM offenders. The samples are mostly comprised of adult males, with average ages between 30 and 40 years, highlighting demographic homogeneity and posing a significant limitation to the generalizability of the results. Findings show that, while CSEM offenders tend to present lower levels of antisocial behavior, greater relational/professional stability, and recidivism almost exclusively in the online sphere, mixed offenders exhibit more impulsivity, psychosocial pathology, and both digital and physical recidivism. The CPORT stands out as the reference instrument for CSEM offenders; for mixed offenders, it is recommended to combine structured tools (STATIC-99R, SVR-20, STABLE/ACUTE-2007) with digital assessment instruments. Limitations remain relating to the diversity of samples and the integration of dynamic psychosocial factors. This review underscores the need for differentiated, multidimensional, and culturally sensitive approaches to assessment and intervention, recommending the development of multicentre longitudinal studies and instruments adapted to the digital reality and the psychosocial complexities characteristic of these sexual offense profiles.
