- Citizenship Fatigue as Mediator between Compulsory Citizenship Behavior and Work-Family ConflictPublication . Costa Neves, Paula Maria; Andrade, C.Framed by the conservation of resources theory, we investigated the mediating role of citizenship fatigue in the relationship between compulsory citizenship behavior and work-family conflict. Using a sample of 171 women (M = 41.16, SD = 10.18) working in facilities for the elderly in Portugal, we examined the direct and indirect relationship between compulsory citizenship behavior and work-family conflict. The data, collected using a selfreported questionnaire, shows that compulsory citizenship behavior influences work-family conflict with citizenship fatigue as a mediator. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
- Emotional exhaustion in female health support workers in elderly care facilitiesPublication . Andrade, C.; Costa Neves, Paula MariaThe current study aims to analyze the emotional exhaustion of female health care workers working in elderly care facilities. Using structural equation modelling we tested the effects of organizational support, coworkers' support, supervisor support and work-family conflict in predicting emotional exhaustion with a sample of 171 female health support workers. Findings showed that organizational support was directly linked with coworkers' support and supervisor support, and indirectly linked, via work-family conflict with emotional exhaustion. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
- A qualitative study on emotional labor and work-family conflict in caregivers working in nursing homesPublication .
- Organizational citizenship behaviors of preschool teachers from public and private sectorPublication . Costa Neves, Paula Maria; Coelho, AnaSeveral studies have identified the nature and characteristics of organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB) in primary and secondary education teachers, but research in the field of preschool education is almost non-existent. Empirical evidence of the impact that this type of behavior has on the functioning of any organization and the particularities of the roles of preschool teachers in relation to those of other teachers, justify conducting studies on this topic with early childhood education professionals. This paper presents the conclusions of a qualitative study carried out with public and private preschool teachers. The organizational citizenship behaviors performed by these professionals are identified, as well as personal and contextual factors that influence them. The data was collected in interviews with preschool teachers and was analyzed following the Grounded Theory procedures, in particular the constant comparison technique (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). In a second moment, the data was discussed with different participants in a focus group. Data analysis indicates that although preschool teachers tend to view most of the activities they develop as central dimensions of their specific professionality, therefore not describing them as OCBs, it is possible to identify some forms of OCBs specific to preschool teachers, either at the professional level (pedagogical and/or organizational) and at the interpersonal level (activities focused on the relationship with children and families). Major divergences were identified in the dimension of providing care.
- Perceived Organizational Support, Coworkers’ Conflict and Organizational Citizenship Behavior: The Mediation Role of Work-Family ConflictPublication . Andrade, Cláudia; Costa Neves, Paula MariaThe aim of the present study is to investigate the extent to which perceived organizational support and coworkers’ conflict and work-family conflict play a role in the performance of three types of organizational citizenship behaviors. A cross-sectional design was used comprising a sample of 164 health support workers working in Portuguese elderly care facilities. Using structural equation model findings showed that perceived organizational support is linked with organizational citizenship behaviors, directly and indirectly, via work-family conflict. Furthermore, coworkers’ conflict was also related with organizational citizenship behaviors, directly and indirectly via work-family conflict. The linkage between perceived organizational support and coworkers’ conflict through work-family conflict can offer new insights into how to enhance organizational citizenship behaviors by active management. These findings can help elderly care organizations and their managers to design better workplace conditions where organizational support and coworkers’ conflict can be better managed allowing workers to have more control over work-family conflict and promoting organizational citizenship behaviors.

- Organizational Citizenship Behavior in Schools: Validation of a QuestionnairePublication . Costa Neves, Paula Maria; Paixão, Rui; Alarcão, Madalena; Gomes, A. DuarteThe present study examines the psychometric properties (including factorial validity) of an organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) scale in a school context. A total of 321 middle and high school teachers from 59 schools in urban and rural areas of central Portugal completed the OCB scale at their schools. The confirmatory factor analysis validated a hierarchical model with four latent factors on the first level (altruism, conscientiousness, civic participation and courtesy) and a second order factor (OCB). The revised model fit with the data, χ 2 /gl = 1.97; CFI = .962; GFI = .952, RMSEA = .05. The proposed scale (comportamentos de cidadania organizacional em escolas- Revista CCOE-R)- is a valid instrument to assess teacher's perceptions of OCB in their schools, allowing investigation at the organizational level of analysis.
