- Epistemic beliefs as a determinant in evidence-based practice in physiotherapy: a multi-country (Europe) cross-sectional online survey studyPublication . Beenena, Paul Christiaan; Filiputtic, Dario; Meyerd, Erna Rosenlund; Carballo-Costa, Lidia; Almeida, Patrícia; Alves Lopes, António; Wijcheng, Joost Egbertus Van; Castro-Caldas, AlexandrePurpose: This article assumes that, in order to improve evidence-based practice in physiotherapy, practitioners need sophisticated epistemic beliefs. Epistemic beliefs, or how physiotherapists view knowledge and how they come to this knowledge, are an important factor. A high sophistication of epistemic beliefs is linked to better handling of the complexity and uncertainty of daily practice and the variety of evidence resources associated with this practice. Materials and methods: This study explored the epistemic beliefs of physiotherapists in 10 different countries in Europe using an online survey: the Connotative Aspects of Epistemic Beliefs (CAEB). Results and conclusions: The study resulted in 1419 surveys. The epistemic beliefs proved to be of little difference between countries, showing a low to moderate sophistication in epistemic beliefs. Given the similar results between countries, this study also suggested the possibility of collaborating internationally in developing an epistemology in physiotherapy that is more suited to the complexity of current demands on health systems. The development of sophistication in epistemic beliefs should be firmly on the agenda for the education of physiotherapists.
- Promotion of online internationalization experiences in physiotherapy studentsPublication . Alves Lopes, AntónioIntroduction: Within the scope of the internationalization project of the Escola Superior de Saúde do Alcoitão (ESSAlcoitão), a set of activities are developed along the academic path of the students, which allow them to be exposed to the international context sequentially and progressively. Methodoloy: During the 2020/21 academic year, ESSAlcoitão, in partnership with 3 institutions in the Netherlands, implemented a project involving students from the 1st year of the Physiotherapy Course. In this project, students are asked, over 3 months, to carry out at least 2 online meetings with an international partner to discuss topics related to the reality of teaching and the practice of Physiotherapists. As a result, students submit an individual reflection on the most relevant points that were identified in this sharing process. In each of the participating institutions, there was a teacher responsible for preparing, supporting, and evaluating the students' reflections. Results: To assess the impact (satisfaction) with 1st-year students at ESSAalcoitão, an online questionnaire (22 questions) was used, with several dimensions (preparation, performance, evaluation, and global opinion) where a response rate of 98% was obtained (n=61). Regarding the answers, 93.4% considered that the preparation of the activity was adequate and that the support materials were adequate (85.2%). Regarding meetings with international peers, 70.2% said that communication was easy during the meetings and that the proposed objectives were achieved (91.2%). Concerning the impact of the activity, 91.8% considered that the activity contributes to a better understanding of the international context of teaching and practice of physiotherapists, stressing that it should continue to be carried out within the scope of the course (88.5%). Conclusions: Because of the results, it seems important to us to carry out this type of activity as it allows students early exposure to the international context, which may facilitate the development of skills that allow them to play a more active and global professional role.
- Online transition of an international minor in physiotherapy in acute carePublication . Alves Lopes, António; Brader, A; Azevedo, Vitor Hugo; Leur, Hans van deIntroduction: To meet the global health ongoing needs, physiotherapists should have competences to intervene in conditions and contexts throughout the life cycle of their clients/patients. Educating physiotherapy students in the knowledge and skills required to operate in an acute care setting both expands and improves their entry level capabilities as well as prepares them to intervene with patients regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Alcoitão School of Health Sciences, Portugal and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands took the initiative to develop an International Minor Physiotherapy Course in Acute Care, in order to address the ongoing demand in this specific environment, using the opportunities given by the ERASMUS+, namely student and teachers mobility programs. Methodology: The content was developed using the international descriptors of competences of the Physiotherapist in Acute Care. Pedagogical and assessment strategies were chosen to reflect the competencies to be achieved, with a strong focus on active learning. This Minor as taught entirely online using asynchronous and synchronous strategies. Results: At the end of the Minor edition, students answered anonymous online questionnaire on the organizational and pedagogical aspects. The data revealed a very favourable opinion regarding the contents discussed (more than 80% strongly agree), pedagogical approaches used, such as online activities (more than 90% agree/strongly agree), teacher support (88% agree/strongly agree). Students were satisfied with Minor's adaptation to the pandemic context, allowing them to obtain the necessary skills to work in this context. Conclusions: Based on the positive responses from the students, we consider the implementation to be successful. The next steps are to integrate hybrid learning methodologies and broaden the participation of students and professors from other international institutions. Promoting skills and knowledge needed to work in acute care meets the growing need for professionals capable of working in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

- Educational strategies to increase student knowledge and reflexion about physiotherapy intervention in the context of covid-19Publication . Alves Lopes, António; Santos, Hugo; Vieira, Ana Isabel; Barreto, Guilherme; Lopes, António M F; Baleia, Isabel; Rosado, Maria Da Lapa; Martins, Maria Elisabete; Esteves, José Manuel; Araújo, PauloBackground: In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Alcoitão School of Health Sciences (ESSA) interrupted on March 16, 2020, all classroom activities, including clinical activities. This situation created the need to transfer all activities and classes to an online format (synchronous and asynchronous) and to promote in students new knowledge/skills/attitudes related to the new professional reality. Purpose: To increase students literacy and reflection concerning the pandemic and to adapt, as a profession to the new needs of society, the Department of Physiotherapy decided to implement an online activity that could facilitate this process. Methods: The online activity was created with a duration of 3 weeks integrated into the clinical curricular units. It involved 218 Physiotherapy students from the 4 curricular years, the Department lecturers and guests speakers. This activity included the creation of an updated repository of information related to the pandemic COVID-19, namely national (DGS) and international (WHO) guidelines, professional guidelines (WCPT, APFISIO, Professional Interest Groups) and multimedia material (videos and podcasts). As part of the activity, students were asked to complete the Coronavirus Disease Program developed by Pysiopedia (Physioplus), according to the academic year, in whole or only some of the modules. To support the activity, several online sessions were promoted, where, with the participation of guests, the pandemic and its impact on the various contexts of Physiotherapy were discussed. To evaluate the activity, students were asked to submit certificates of completion of the Coronavirus Disease Program course and an individual reflection on the institutional e-learning platform. To assess the impact on student satisfaction, an online questionnaire with several dimensions (34 questions) was used. Results: 96% of the Students (n= 211) completed this course, submitting the certificates of completion and the individual reflection. Concerning the student satisfaction, with a response rate of 96% distributed evenly across the various academic years, 78.7% considered that the activity, in general, was clear and was well structured, having reached the general objectives of the activity (79.6%), 83.4% also considered that it was an overall positive experience and reinforcing the importance of carrying out this type of activities (76.3%). Conclusion(s): From the results we can conclude that is important to develop updated activities adapted to current needs, using online approaches and involving all the partners in the educational process. It is important that Physiotherapy educators, create and implement activities that facilitate the development of students competencies that allow them to play a proactive role in global and local efforts to reduce the impact health and social effects of this pandemic.
