- Impact of a radiological protection campaign in emergency paediatric radiology: a multicentric observational study in BrazilPublication . Oliveira Bernardo, Mônica; Morgado, Flávio; dos Santos, Alair Augusto Sarmet Moreira Damas; Foley, Shane; Paulo, Graciano; de Almeida, Fernando AntônioPurpose: To evaluate the impact of a paediatric radiological protection campaign, implemented in the emergency units of a healthcare provider network in Brazil. This campaign aimed to promote awareness among emergency department physicians, regarding justifcation of paediatric X-ray referrals for paranasal sinus, chest and CT exams, as a strategy to reduce exposure to ionising radiation. Method: Frequency analysis of common paediatric imaging referrals from 19 emergency departments was performed for a 3-year period (2015–2018) to coincide with before, during and after the implementation of the radiation protection campaign. The campaign was multifaceted and involved dissemination of educational materials and imaging referral guidelines along with quarterly meetings with participating centres’ leaderships. Additionally, patient dose cards were distributed to patients/carers. The Chi-Square test was used to examine the association between the type of examination and the patient’s age group. Exact-Fisher test was performed to check for an association between participant engagement and the existence of the radiation protection committee. Results: Referrals reduced by 25% following the campaign with no reports of misdiagnosis. Many referrals in the youngest age groups. In 15 units, a radiological protection committee was created to raise awareness and to create a multi professional team to communicate the risks and benefits of radiological procedure in children. Conclusion: The campaign resulted in a substantial reduction in radiological referrals while promoting a radiation protection culture. Simple education initiatives can contribute to savings in both finances and radiation doses, particularly important in radiosensitive cohorts.
- Promotion of online internationalization experiences in physiotherapy studentsPublication . Alves Lopes, AntónioIntroduction: Within the scope of the internationalization project of the Escola Superior de Saúde do Alcoitão (ESSAlcoitão), a set of activities are developed along the academic path of the students, which allow them to be exposed to the international context sequentially and progressively. Methodoloy: During the 2020/21 academic year, ESSAlcoitão, in partnership with 3 institutions in the Netherlands, implemented a project involving students from the 1st year of the Physiotherapy Course. In this project, students are asked, over 3 months, to carry out at least 2 online meetings with an international partner to discuss topics related to the reality of teaching and the practice of Physiotherapists. As a result, students submit an individual reflection on the most relevant points that were identified in this sharing process. In each of the participating institutions, there was a teacher responsible for preparing, supporting, and evaluating the students' reflections. Results: To assess the impact (satisfaction) with 1st-year students at ESSAalcoitão, an online questionnaire (22 questions) was used, with several dimensions (preparation, performance, evaluation, and global opinion) where a response rate of 98% was obtained (n=61). Regarding the answers, 93.4% considered that the preparation of the activity was adequate and that the support materials were adequate (85.2%). Regarding meetings with international peers, 70.2% said that communication was easy during the meetings and that the proposed objectives were achieved (91.2%). Concerning the impact of the activity, 91.8% considered that the activity contributes to a better understanding of the international context of teaching and practice of physiotherapists, stressing that it should continue to be carried out within the scope of the course (88.5%). Conclusions: Because of the results, it seems important to us to carry out this type of activity as it allows students early exposure to the international context, which may facilitate the development of skills that allow them to play a more active and global professional role.
- Online transition of an international minor in physiotherapy in acute carePublication . Alves Lopes, António; Brader, A; Azevedo, Vitor Hugo; Leur, Hans van deIntroduction: To meet the global health ongoing needs, physiotherapists should have competences to intervene in conditions and contexts throughout the life cycle of their clients/patients. Educating physiotherapy students in the knowledge and skills required to operate in an acute care setting both expands and improves their entry level capabilities as well as prepares them to intervene with patients regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Alcoitão School of Health Sciences, Portugal and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands took the initiative to develop an International Minor Physiotherapy Course in Acute Care, in order to address the ongoing demand in this specific environment, using the opportunities given by the ERASMUS+, namely student and teachers mobility programs. Methodology: The content was developed using the international descriptors of competences of the Physiotherapist in Acute Care. Pedagogical and assessment strategies were chosen to reflect the competencies to be achieved, with a strong focus on active learning. This Minor as taught entirely online using asynchronous and synchronous strategies. Results: At the end of the Minor edition, students answered anonymous online questionnaire on the organizational and pedagogical aspects. The data revealed a very favourable opinion regarding the contents discussed (more than 80% strongly agree), pedagogical approaches used, such as online activities (more than 90% agree/strongly agree), teacher support (88% agree/strongly agree). Students were satisfied with Minor's adaptation to the pandemic context, allowing them to obtain the necessary skills to work in this context. Conclusions: Based on the positive responses from the students, we consider the implementation to be successful. The next steps are to integrate hybrid learning methodologies and broaden the participation of students and professors from other international institutions. Promoting skills and knowledge needed to work in acute care meets the growing need for professionals capable of working in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
