  • Strategical Pedagogy for the Development of Socio-Emotional Competences in Nursing Students

    Socio-emotional competencies (SECs) are essential for the quality of nursing practice. This study aimed to understand the pedagogical strategies provided by universities for the development of SECs in Brazil, as perceived by nursing students. This is a descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach involving 57 nursing students from a public Higher Education Institution in Brazil. Data collection was conducted through focus groups, and interpretation was carried out using inductive thematic analysis. The pedagogical strategies identified were categorized as follows: those offered by the curriculum matrix, those provided by the Nursing course department, those made available by the university as a whole (involving all courses and students), and the challenges related to the development of socio-emotional competencies. This study revealed a deficit in the integration of SECs in the curriculum, highlighting the need for curricular restructuring and discussions on this topic. Equipping students with socio-emotional competencies during their training can help address these gaps, fostering greater resilience and self-care capabilities among nursing professionals.
  • Translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation of measurement instruments :

    Cross-cultural validation of self-reported measurement instruments for research is a long and complex process, which involves specific risks of bias that could affect the research process and results. Furthermore, it requires researchers to have a wide range of technical knowledge about the translation, adaptation and pre-test aspects, their purposes and options, about the different psychometric properties, and the required evidence for their assessment and knowledge about the quantitative data processing and analysis using statistical software. This article aimed: 1) identify all guidelines and recommendations for translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation within the healthcare sciences; 2) describe the methodological approaches established in these guidelines for conducting translation, adaptation, and cross-cultural validation; and 3) provide a practical guideline featuring various methodological options for novice researchers involved in translating, adapting, and validating measurement instruments. Forty-two guidelines on translation, adaptation, or cross-cultural validation of measurement instruments were obtained from “CINAHL with Full Text” (via EBSCO) and “MEDLINE with Full Text”. A content analysis was conducted to identify the similarities and differences in the methodological approaches recommended. Bases on these similarities and differences, we proposed an eight-step guideline that includes: a) forward translation; 2) synthesis of translations; 3) back translation; 4) harmonization; 5) pre-testing; 6) field testing; 7) psychometric validation, and 8) analysis of psychometric properties. It is a practical guideline because it provides extensive and comprehensive information on the methodological approaches available to researchers. This is the first methodological literature review carried out in the healthcare sciences regarding the methodological approaches recommended by existing guidelines.
  • Evaluating the Methodological Approaches of Cross-Cultural Adaptation of the Bedside Handover Attitudes and Behaviours Questionnaire into Portuguese

    Abstract: Nurse managers need culturally adapted assessment instruments to support the implementation of change to Nursing Bedside Handover (NBH) in healthcare institutions. This study aimed to cross-culturally adapt the Bedside Handover Attitudes and Behaviours (BHAB) questionnaire to the Portuguese context and evaluate the methodological approaches used for this purpose. To guide this study, we followed a guideline for cross-cultural translation and adaptation measurement instruments in healthcare. The results of the content validity testing suggested that the BHAB questionnaire is a valid instrument for use in the Portuguese context. To obtain these results we showed 1) using of a new methodological approach, the dual focus, to resolve the divergences and ambiguities in the translators’ committee and the multi-professional committee; 2) the lack of a conceptual definition of the construct of the instrument as a requirement to retain items with I-CVI <0.70 after validity relevance pretesting and 3) the cognitive debriefing and relevance pretesting as methodological approaches which can be used alone or together to reinforce the evaluation of cultural relevance of the items. We concluded there is a need for guidelines to support the decision-making process of healthcare researchers with comprehensive information about the different methodological approaches they can follow.
  • Escala de Perceção Individual da Carga de Trabalho (IWPS-R) (Cox et al., 2010)

    A IWPS-R foi desenvolvida para ser uma ferramenta importante no fornecimento de informações necessárias para formular intervenções que visam melhorar a perceção dos enfermeiros sobre a sua carga de trabalho e, consequentemente, o ambiente da prática de enfermagem, promovendo, assim, a segurança e a qualidade dos cuidados. Em Portugal não existia uma escala válida e fiável que avaliasse a satisfação dos enfermeiros com a sua carga de trabalho. Desta forma, o estudo teve como objetivo adaptar culturalmente/linguisticamente e validar a escala IWPS-R, dando origem à versão portuguesa da mesma. A Escala de Perceção Individual da Carga de Trabalho (EPICT) é composta por 5 dimensões, com um total de 21 itens. As dimensões são: Suporte do Enfermeiro Gestor, Suporte da Equipa, Recursos da Organização, Carga de Trabalho e Intenção de Permanecer. A EPICT apresenta um alfa de Cronbach de 0,88. É um instrumento de recolha de dados pertinente para o contexto da gestão em enfermagem. Nesta linha, oferece contributos fundamentais, não só para a investigação futura, como para a prática de enfermagem, nomeadamente na promoção de ambientes de trabalho favoráveis nos mais variados contextos

    A Individual Workload Perception Scale-Revised (IWPS-R) foi desenvolvida para ser uma ferramenta importante no fornecimento de informações necessárias para formular intervenções que visam melhorar a perceção dos enfermeiros sobre a sua carga de trabalho e, consequentemente, o ambiente da prática de enfermagem, promovendo, assim, a segurança e a qualidade dos cuidados. Em Portugal não existia uma escala válida e fiável que avaliasse a satisfação dos enfermeiros com a sua carga de trabalho. Consequentemente, foi decidido adaptar culturalmente/linguisticamente e validar a IWPS-R, dando origem à versão portuguesa da mesma. Assim, a versão portuguesa IWPS-R tem 5 dimensões, com um total de 21 itens. Integra cinco dimensões: o Suporte do Enfermeiro Gestor, o Suporte da Equipa, os Recursos da Organização, a Carga de Trabalho e a Intenção de Permanecer. A EPICT apresenta um Alfa de Cronbach de 0,88. É um instrumento de recolha de dados pertinente para o contexto da gestão e da investigação em enfermagem.
