- Strategical Pedagogy for the Development of Socio-Emotional Competences in Nursing StudentsPublication . Andrian Leal, Laura; Cassiano, Carolina; J. M. Cruchinho, Paulo; Nunes, Elisabete; Lucas, P.; Teixeira, Gisela; Henriques, Silvia HelenaSocio-emotional competencies (SECs) are essential for the quality of nursing practice. This study aimed to understand the pedagogical strategies provided by universities for the development of SECs in Brazil, as perceived by nursing students. This is a descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach involving 57 nursing students from a public Higher Education Institution in Brazil. Data collection was conducted through focus groups, and interpretation was carried out using inductive thematic analysis. The pedagogical strategies identified were categorized as follows: those offered by the curriculum matrix, those provided by the Nursing course department, those made available by the university as a whole (involving all courses and students), and the challenges related to the development of socio-emotional competencies. This study revealed a deficit in the integration of SECs in the curriculum, highlighting the need for curricular restructuring and discussions on this topic. Equipping students with socio-emotional competencies during their training can help address these gaps, fostering greater resilience and self-care capabilities among nursing professionals.
- Translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation of measurement instruments :Publication . J. M. Cruchinho, Paulo; López-Franco, María-Dolores; Capelas, ML; Almeida, Sofia; Bennett, Phillippa May; Miranda da Silva, Marcelle; Teixeira, Gisela; Nunes, Elisabete; Lucas, P.; Mendes Gaspar, Maria FilomenaCross-cultural validation of self-reported measurement instruments for research is a long and complex process, which involves specific risks of bias that could affect the research process and results. Furthermore, it requires researchers to have a wide range of technical knowledge about the translation, adaptation and pre-test aspects, their purposes and options, about the different psychometric properties, and the required evidence for their assessment and knowledge about the quantitative data processing and analysis using statistical software. This article aimed: 1) identify all guidelines and recommendations for translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation within the healthcare sciences; 2) describe the methodological approaches established in these guidelines for conducting translation, adaptation, and cross-cultural validation; and 3) provide a practical guideline featuring various methodological options for novice researchers involved in translating, adapting, and validating measurement instruments. Forty-two guidelines on translation, adaptation, or cross-cultural validation of measurement instruments were obtained from “CINAHL with Full Text” (via EBSCO) and “MEDLINE with Full Text”. A content analysis was conducted to identify the similarities and differences in the methodological approaches recommended. Bases on these similarities and differences, we proposed an eight-step guideline that includes: a) forward translation; 2) synthesis of translations; 3) back translation; 4) harmonization; 5) pre-testing; 6) field testing; 7) psychometric validation, and 8) analysis of psychometric properties. It is a practical guideline because it provides extensive and comprehensive information on the methodological approaches available to researchers. This is the first methodological literature review carried out in the healthcare sciences regarding the methodological approaches recommended by existing guidelines.
- Evaluating the Methodological Approaches of Cross-Cultural Adaptation of the Bedside Handover Attitudes and Behaviours Questionnaire into PortuguesePublication . Cruchinho, Paulo J. M.; Teixeira, Gisela; Lucas, P.; Mendes Gaspar, Maria FilomenaAbstract: Nurse managers need culturally adapted assessment instruments to support the implementation of change to Nursing Bedside Handover (NBH) in healthcare institutions. This study aimed to cross-culturally adapt the Bedside Handover Attitudes and Behaviours (BHAB) questionnaire to the Portuguese context and evaluate the methodological approaches used for this purpose. To guide this study, we followed a guideline for cross-cultural translation and adaptation measurement instruments in healthcare. The results of the content validity testing suggested that the BHAB questionnaire is a valid instrument for use in the Portuguese context. To obtain these results we showed 1) using of a new methodological approach, the dual focus, to resolve the divergences and ambiguities in the translators’ committee and the multi-professional committee; 2) the lack of a conceptual definition of the construct of the instrument as a requirement to retain items with I-CVI <0.70 after validity relevance pretesting and 3) the cognitive debriefing and relevance pretesting as methodological approaches which can be used alone or together to reinforce the evaluation of cultural relevance of the items. We concluded there is a need for guidelines to support the decision-making process of healthcare researchers with comprehensive information about the different methodological approaches they can follow.
- Cultural Competence and Nursing Work Environment: Impact on Culturally Congruent Care in Portuguese Multicultural Healthcare UnitsPublication . Teixeira, Gisela; Picoito, Ricardo; Gaspar, Filomena; Lucas, PedroCultural competence is central to ensuring effective culturally congruent care to patients and fostering positive work environments, particularly in multicultural settings. Objective: This study aimed to analyse the relationship between cultural competence, the nursing work environment, and the delivery of culturally congruent care in multicultural units of a healthcare organisation in Portugal. Method: This was a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study, targeting nurses from multicultural units. Data were collected using both online and paper-based questionnaires, which included the Cultural Competence Questionnaire for Help Professionals, the Nursing Work Index—Revised Scale (NWI-R-PT), and a single question assessing nurses’ perceptions of the adequacy of the culturally congruent care they provide. Results: A moderate, positive correlation was identified between cultural competence and the Fundamentals for Nursing, while the nursing work environment was influenced by organisational support, professional category, and unit type. Discussion: The findings suggest that enhancing cultural knowledge and technical skills and reinforcing management support may positively impact culturally congruent care delivery in multicultural settings. Conclusion: This study contributes to nursing knowledge by highlighting the complex interactions between cultural competence and the work environment in Portuguese multicultural healthcare units. Future research should explore the impact of transcultural nursing leadership on multicultural work environments and in the delivery of culturally congruent care.
- Impact of Nurse Manager’s Attributes on Multi-Cultural Nursing Teams: A Scoping ReviewPublication . Teixeira, Gisela; Lucas, Pedro; Gaspar, FilomenaAs global migration increases, nurse managers’ effectiveness in multi-cultural nursing work environments is crucial due to the rising cultural diversity within healthcare teams. Despite the increasing international recruitment of qualified nurses to address the worldwide nursing shortage, no studies have synthesised the impact of nurse managers’ attributes on nurses in multi-cultural nursing teams. Therefore, it was conducted a literature review aimed to synthesise the available literature on how nurse managers’ personality traits, competencies, behaviours, and leadership styles influence nurse outcomes in multi-cultural nursing teams. Methods: Scoping review conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines to map the relationship or influence of nurse managers’ personality traits, competencies, behaviours, and leadership styles on the outcomes of nurses in multi-cultural settings across various clinical environments. Searches were conducted across electronic databases such as CINAHL and MEDLINE, along with grey literature. Results: This review included 39 studies, highlighting 29 personality traits, 9 competencies, 115 behaviours, and 5 leadership styles that impact nurses’ outcomes. Key findings emphasise the importance of nurse managers being supportive, culturally competent, and effective communicators, with transformational leadership style being particularly beneficial. Conclusions: These findings provide insights for planning and developing training programmes to equip current and future nurse managers with skills to effectively lead in multi-cultural care settings.

- Targeted temperature management to minimise secondary brain injury after cardiac arrest: A systematic reviewPublication . Seixas, Joana Costa; Oliveira, Mariana; Monteiro, Mariana; Pinto, Maria do Rosário; Durão, Cândida; Teixeira, Gisela; Henriques, Helga Rafael; Teixeira, Joana FerreiraBackground: A patient recovering from an in-hospital or out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (CA) requires interventions for recovery, particularly for minimising secondary brain injury. Targeted temperature management (TTM) is the intervention with the greatest impact on neurological recovery. Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to describe current TTM in adult CA patients and its impact on functional outcomes. Methods: This systematic review was developed between March and May 2024 according to the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines for reporting. Eligibility criteria were established. We systematically reviewed studies enrolling adult CA patients who received TTM and reported functional outcomes. The search strategy was applied in the following databases: Medline and CINAHL Ultimate, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, through EBSCO, and Scopus. The Rayyan software was used for the final extraction and selection. Results: The studies retrieved highlight the following interventions for neuroprotection: the use of a continuous temperature feedback system (continuous temperature monitoring with vesical, oesophageal, or parenthetic probes) for temperature induction; conducting a preinduction time between 390 min (6.5 h) and 12 h and an induction time greater than 440 min (7.3 h); setting the target temperature between 32 °C and 37.5 °C according to the patient's characteristics for a maintenance period between 24 and 48 h; the administration of sedatives, antipyretics, and neuromuscular blockers; and the assessment of neurological prognosis only after the rewarming phase, using scales such as the Cerebral Performance Category and the Modified Rankin Score. Conclusions: Continuous research and investment in this area of knowledge are highly encouraged, particularly in terms of refining accurate neurological prognostic tools and assessment scales.
