- Adaptation to TV delays based on the user behavior towards a cheating-free second screen entertainmentPublication . Madeira, Rui Neves; Centineiro, Paulo; Correia, NunoRecent advances in technology created new opportunities to enhance TV personalization, providing viewers with individualized ways to watch TV and to interact with its content. Second screen applications are promising vehicles to enhance the viewers’ experiences, but researchers need to take into account the effect that the TV delay has on viewers, in particular when watching broadcasted live events. In this paper, we propose a software-based solution to deal with TV delays. It is mainly directed for a gaming context in which the user has the means to control the synchronisation between the second screen application and the TV content. Taking this scenario into account, we implemented a cheating-detection mechanism to cope with the potential exploitation of the system by its users.

- Assessment Platform of Water and Energy Efficiency in Collective Irrigation SystemsPublication . Antunes, André; Felicíssimo, D; Ferreira, Bruno; Carriço, NelsonSouthern European countries do not have regular precipitation to assure the agricultural water needs, since precipitation occurs scarcely from April to October. As such, irrigation is essential for agriculture and is only possible with the existence of hydraulic infrastructures for storage and water conveyance. In Portugal, these hydraulic infrastructures are mostly public, forming collective irrigation systems, and managed by Irrigation Associations. The efficiency of irrigation should be assured through a set of guidelines and procedures promoting a more efficient use of water and energy. Furthermore, in Portugal there are currently no performance assessment system developed to evaluate the water and energy efficiency in CIS. The current practice for the assessment of water and energy efficiency is a set of reactive and unintegrated actions. As such, the gathered information is not usually organized and does not follow systematic procedures. Additionally, appropriate indicators for water and energy loss diagnostic are not defined, thus making it impossible to compare efficiencies between CIS. In this context, the AGIR R&D project aiming the establishment of a performance assessment system for water and energy efficiency assessment in CIS was developed. One of the outcomes of the project was the development of a user friendly platform for the CIS management utilities to assess its water and energy efficiencies. This paper presents the platform AGIR, its functionalities and main components. The platform was designed allowing systematic and uniform data introduction, for usage by various decision support modules.
- Automatic level generation for platform videogames using genetic algorithmsPublication . Mourato, Fausto; Santos, Manuel Próspero dos; Birra, FernandoIn this document we present an investigation on automatically generating levels for platform videogames. Common approaches for this problem are rhythm based, where input patterns are transformed in a valid geometry, and chunk based, where samples are humanly created and automatically assembled like a puzzle. The proposal hereby presented is to explore this challenge with the usage of Genetic Algorithms, facing it as a search problem, in order to achieve higher expressivity and less linearity than in rhythm based approach and without requiring human creation as it happens with the chunk based approach. With simple heuristics the system is able to generate playable levels in a small amount of time (one level is created in less than a minute) and with considerable diversity, as our results show.
- Balanced Scorecard: A Powerful Method to Improve the Management of Educational InstitutionsPublication . Pereira, José Miguel Costa Dias; Viegas, VítorTeaching, learning and education are the main activities related with any higher education institution (HEI), be they public or private. In this context, the balanced scorecard (BSC) is a powerful method that helps the successful application of performance measurements in terms of the efficiency of the programs, processes and people of any educational institution. The key performance indicators (KPI) are crucial indicators to translate the strategy into action, improving the synergies of all the people that contribute to management success. This paper underlines the importance of the BSC model in private, governmental and non-profit organizations highlighting its implementation in a HEI. In order to clarify the main concepts of the application of the BSC method in a HEI, a hypothetical institution (IPX) is considered and a set of strategic objectives are considered in terms of financial, clients, business, learning and growth perspectives. The key parameter indicators and the action plan are defined according to the HEI vision.

- Bringing Human Factor to Business IntelligencePublication . Sapateiro, Cláudio; Bernardo, RuiStarting from Business Intelligence (BI) reference models, this work proposes to extend the multi-dimensional data modeling approach to integrate Human Factors (HF) related dimensions. The overall goal is to promote a fine grain understanding of derived Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) through an enhanced characterization of the operational level of work context. HF research has traditionally approached critical domains and complex socio-technical systems with a chief consideration of human situated action. Grounded on a review of the body of knowledge of the HF field this work proposes the Business Intelligence for Human Factors (BI4HF) framework. It intends to provide guidance on pertinent data identification, collection methods, modeling and integration within a BI project endeavor. BI4HF foundations are introduced and a use case on a manufacturing industry organization is presented. The outcome of the enacted BI project referred in the use case allowed new analytical capabilities regarding newly derived and existing KPIs related to operational performance.
- Building on Mobile towards Better Stuttering Awareness to Improve Speech TherapyPublication . Madeira, Rui Neves; Macedo, Patrícia; Pita, Pedro; Bonança, Íris; Germano, HelenaThis paper describes the project I Aware my Stuttering , which is a system with a focus on a mobile application for smartphones directed to people who stutter. This software will allow users to register their stuttering related situations, registering, for example, the contexts in which they occur, the interlocutors and their reactions to the situations, and the emotions felt. The application provides a reporting module that includes charts to help visualizing how stuttering situations evolve according to several features. It will help promote daily self-monitoring of speech as a means of controlling stuttering, being personalized according to the user profile. The system also offers a module for the speech therapist, which can monitor and receive reports related to users which are her/his patients. This collected data will improve the therapeutic process by enhancing discussion about registers performed immediately after a real context situation. Additionally, this paper presents a first user study conducted to assess and validate the project’s purpose and the central module for registration of stuttering related situations.
