- Impact of Exergames on the Mental Health of Older Adults: A Systematic Review and GRADE Evidence SynthesisPublication . Fernandes, Carla Sílvia; Magalhães, Bruno; Lima, Andreia; Nóbrega, Perpétua; Silva, Mafalda; Santos, CéliaExergames, which combine digital games and physical exercise, have become a popular alternative to traditional exercise programs and are increasingly used in the health domains. This study aimed to provide a systematic review to synthesize existing studies on the use of exergames for the mental wellbeing of healthy older adults, aggregating the collected data to identify effect size. We performed a Systematic Review and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Assessment (GRADE) evidence synthesis. We performed the search in the following databases: MEDLINE®, CINAHL®, SPORTDiscus, SCOPUS, SciELO, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, and Cochrane® Central Register of Controlled Trials from the first record until October 2021. Randomized controlled trials using exergames as an intervention were included. A total of 10 articles published between 2009 and 2021 were selected. Most studies used the Nintendo Wii® as the exergame in the intervention program. Interventions ranged from 6 to 12 weeks, with 8-week programs being most frequent. It was possible to observe a positive effect on mood, the reduction of apathy, anxiety and depression, self-esteem, and affection.
- Exergames for rehabilitation in stroke survivors: Umbrella review of meta-analysesPublication . Fernandes, Carla Sílvia; Magalhães, Bruno; Gonçalves, Filipe; Lima, Andreia; Silva, Mafalda; Moreira, Maria Teresa; Santos, Célia; Ferreira, SaloméBackground: It is essential to explore alternative methods to motivate stroke survivors throughout their lengthy rehabilitation journey. Exergames have emerged as promising tools for rehabilitating this demographic. Objective: We aimed to synthesize the combined evidence from meta-analyses that assessed the effects of exergames in the rehabilitation of stroke survivors. Methods: The umbrella review was conducted utilizing several databases, including MEDLINE® (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online), CINAHL® (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), the Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, SPORTDiscus®, and Scopus®. It included studies published until December 2023 without any restrictions based on publication date. Results: The analysis included 11 meta-analyses involving approximately 9,615 patients, reflecting a growing adoption of exergames in post-stroke rehabilitation since 2015, focusing on using Nintendo Wii. The analyzed studies varied widely in intervention duration (from 1 to 16 weeks) and were applied across different phases of post-stroke rehabilitation, from the acute to the chronic phase. Significant improvements were observed in balance and upper limb functionality, although there was notable methodological heterogeneity and variability in the results. Conclusions: This study highlights the value of exergames in the rehabilitation of stroke survivors and recommends future research that adopts rigorous methodological designs with clearly specified intervention stages. It underscores the importance of additional qualitative studies to explore the perspectives of patients and healthcare professionals regarding exergames, aiming to refine rehabilitation strategies and enhance the clinical benefits achieved.
- Evaluation of the feasibility and acceptability of an educational intervention in nursing: protocol of a pilot studyPublication . Peixoto, Nuno Miguel; Peixoto, Tiago André; Pinto, Cândida; Santos, CéliaObjective: to explain the protocol of a pilot study that aims to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a nursing educational intervention to promote health behaviors in cancer survivors. Method: the protocol was developed based on the Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials 2013 - SPIRIT 2013 Statement, in Porto, Portugal in 2022. Conclusion: this study has laid the structural foundations and content for conducting a pilot study and may later influence the decision to conduct a randomized controlled trial.
- Validation of a form to assess the self-care competence of the person with ventilation ostomyPublication . Pereira, Brizida; Queirós, Sílvia; Brito, Alice; Santos, CéliaIntroduction: Self-care competence can improve health outcomes in people with a tracheostomy. The use of an instrument to assess the self-care competence of the person with an ostomy allows for organized and complete data collection, facilitating the identification of nursing care needs. In Portugal there is no validated instrument that allows the assessment of self-care competence of the person with a tracheostomy. Objetives: To assess the psychometric and clinimetric properties of the form to assess self-care competence of the person with a tracheostomy. Methods: Methodological study in a non-probability sample of 195 participants. Results: The form presented high internal consistency values, being greater than 0.90 in all domains. Inter-judge reliability, the Wilcoxon test, and the two-half test showed very similar values in the evaluation performed between evaluators. Regarding its validity, a positive interdomain correlation and good relation between clinical variables were demonstrated. Conclusion: The instrument demonstrated good psychometric and clinimetric properties, however further studies are needed to assess reliability and validity.

- Patients' beliefs about medicines and adherence to medication in ischemic heart diseasePublication . Dias, António; Pereira, Carlos; Monteiro, Maria João; Santos, CéliaIntroduction: The phenomenon of adherence to treatment is a motive of worry from the scientific community, since it is considered as a worldwide problem of high magnitude. The implications are of great relevance in morbidity, mortality, in the significant increase in the consumption of health care and in the costs to the health system, particularly in patients with ischemic heart disease. We intend to evaluate adherence to treatment and relate beliefs about medicines with adherence to treatment. Material and methods: This study is descriptive-correlational and cross-sectional. It was performed on 254 patients with ischemic heart disease who were in follow-up consultation in the hospital at the time of the questionnaire application. Data collection was performed through a self-administered questionnaire, integrating the following scales: Measure Adherence to Treatment and Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire. Results: The patients had a mean age of 66.94 years (SD = 11.62), 74% were male, 73.2% were married, 69.3% had education up to the “4th grade”, 57.1% lived in the village, 70.1% were retired and 49.6% had an income below “one minimum wage”. We found that 50.4% of patients did not adhere to treatment. Women had a strong belief in the specific needs of the prescribed medication, while men expressed greater belief in relation to long-term side effects (P > .05). Patients who expressed a low belief about the harmful potential of medicines revealed predictors of adherence to medication. Conclusion: The results are consistent with previous studies in which individuals with lower beliefs in specific concerns reported higher rates of adherence to medication.
- Nursing Interventions to Promote Self-Care in a Candidate for a Bowel Elimination Ostomy: Scoping ReviewPublication . Soares-Pinto, Igor; Queirós, Sílvia; Alves, Paulo; Manuel, Tânia; Santos, Célia; Brito, AliceObjectives: To identify nursing interventions, their characteristics, and outcomes for promoting self-care in candidates for a bowel elimination ostomy. Materials and methods: A scoping review was carried out based on the Joanna Briggs Institute’s recommendations. For this, studies published in Portuguese, English, and Spanish on the Web of Science, CINAHL, and Scopus databases and without a time limit were selected on November 9, 2020. Results: Of 2248 articles identified, 41 were included in this review. We identified 20 nursing interventions associated with the self-care of patients with an ostomy; most of them have gaps in their content, method, and frequency or dosing. More than 30 indicators were identified to assess the impact of nursing interventions; however, most of them were indirect assessments. Conclusion: There is scarce evidence regarding the different aspects that must be involved in nursing interventions for patients with a stoma. Moreover, there is no standardization in methods, frequency, or dosing of intervention. It is urgent to define the content, method, and frequency of nursing interventions necessary to promote self-care in patients with a bowel elimination ostomy and to use assessment tools that directly measure stoma self-care competence
- Self-care competence of patients with an intestinal stoma in the preoperative fasePublication . Silva, Carla; Santos, Célia; Brito, Alice; Cardoso, Teresa; Lopes, JoanaBackground: Patients undergoing intestinal stoma formation need to develop their stoma self-care competence. This competence should start being developed during the preoperative phase. Objective: To identify patients’ stoma self-care competence in the preoperative phase, particularly on the day before ostomy surgery. Methodology: Quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. Non-probability sampling technique with 50 participants. Data were collected using the assessment form of the Self-Care Competence of the Person with an Intestinal Stoma (CAO-EI: ESEP). Results: The level of knowledge represents the self-care competence of patients with an intestinal stoma in the preoperative phase of an ostomy surgery. Conclusion: The multidimensional nature of the self-care competence of patients with intestinal stoma justifies exploring other domains of this competence besides knowledge in the preoperative phase given the identified benefits on the process of adaptation after surgery
