- Effects of physical exercise in reducing caregivers burden: a systematic reviewPublication . Cardoso, Carla; Lumini Landeiro, Maria José; Martins, TeresaBackground and aim: Caring for someone can be physically and psychologically demanding, predisposing caregivers to muscle injuries, fatigue, exhaustion, depression, anxiety, and burnout. The literature suggests several approaches to reducing caregiver burden, one of which is physical exercise. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the eectiveness of exercise-based programs or muscle relaxation in reducing caregiver burden and stress among family caregivers. Method: A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. The search was performed in the Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Scopus databases and through the EBSCOhost aggregator (CINAHL Plus, MEDLINE, and SportDiscus). Studies were selected based on the PICODacronym. Results: Eleven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and two other experimental studies were included. The reviewed programs encompassed aerobics, strengthening, and muscle relaxation exercises, delivered by various professionals in diverse settings, such as caregivers’ homes, gyms, and hospital environments. Although the programs varied in type, duration, and structure, the majority of the studies demonstrated positive eects on caregivers’ physical and psychological well-being, along with reductions in burden and stress. Conclusion: The results suggest that physical exercise interventions are eective in reducing caregiver burden and stress, while also enhancing overall well- being. Future strategies should emphasize the importance of raising awareness among caregivers about adopting healthy lifestyles, with a particular focus on regular physical activity, as a means of relaxation and self-care. To maximize the eectiveness of these interventions, incorporating flexible, home-based components and engaging multidisciplinary teams could enhance accessibility, adherence, and impact.
- Effectiveness of a new thermal insulation blanket in the control of inadvertent perioperative hypothermia and comfort: a randomized controlled trialPublication . Carvalho, Isaura; Carvalho, Miguel; Abelha, Fernando; Martins, TeresaBackground Disturbances in the thermoregulatory system can precipitate inadvertent hypothermia in patients undergoing surgeries lasting over 60 min, causing serious complications in the recovery process. Cutaneous thermal protection is relevant for the control of temperature of patients in the perioperative setting. The standard thermal protection widely utilized is an electric forced warm air blanket. This study compared a new layered textile blanket with the standard protection. The hypothesis posited that the textile blanket could provide cutaneous thermal protection comparable to that of the standard protection (forced-air warming blanket), in terms of temperature variation and safety. Methods This randomized controlled trial was conducted at a Portuguese orthopedic hospital from October 2018 to January 2019, comprising 124 adult patients undergoing elective total knee arthroplasty. Participants were randomly allocated to either the intervention group, receiving the textile blanket, or to the control group, receiving standard measures. Tympanic temperature, shivering, and thermal comfort perception were evaluated at six time points. Comfort dimensions and ergonomic aspects were also assessed. Parametric statistics were performed, and independent samples t-tests and repeated measures were used to compare temperature variations and thermal comfort. Results No statistically significant differences were found between groups in mean temperature variation, visual perception of thermal comfort, and thermal and perioperative comfort scales. The intervention group (n = 65) scored significantly higher in ergonomic evaluations compared to the control group (n = 59) for: fit to body and general comfort (p = 0.004), touch (p = 0.005), and feeling of comfort with the inner layer texture and shape (p < 0.001). Conclusion The tested blanket had a comparable performance to the standard protection, suggesting it as a potential sustainable alternative to the recommended measures for thermal protection. However, further investigations across diverse contexts and populations are needed to validate these findings.
- Understanding quality of life's challenges in sarcoma patients: A mixed-methods studyPublication . Almeida, Ana Maria; Lima, Ligia; Martins, TeresaPurpose: Sarcoma, a highly aggressive form of cancer, profoundly affects patients both physically and psychologically. This study aimed to assess sarcoma patients' health-related quality of life and explore their experiences of living with the disease and their specific care requirements. Methods: This research employed a convergent parallel mixed-methods design. Fifty-two sarcoma patients completed the European Portuguese version of the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire, and seven of them participated in semi-structured interviews. Descriptive measures, Cronbach alpha for internal consistency, t-teste-Anova and stepwise regression were employed in the quantitative analysis. Qualitative data was analysed thematically. Results: The most affected Quality of life (QoL) dimensions were role functioning and global health, areas of functioning that were also described as impacted in patients' experiences. Symptoms like insomnia, pain, and fatigue were frequently reported. Symptoms such as fatigue, pain, and financial difficulty explain QoL variance. No significant differences in QoL were found according to the different forms of treatment. Analysis of the interviews revealed three overarching themes: (1) disruption of daily life, (2) adaptation to life with sarcoma, and (3) the demand for more personalized care, allowing to gain a deeper understanding of living with sarcoma. Conclusion: The results underscore the significance of delivering care that enhances the quality of life for sarcoma patients, addressing both their physical and psychosocial needs, and providing personalized support throughout all stages of the disease. - Realistic simulation in nursing education: Testing two scenario‐based modelsPublication . Martins, Teresa; Santos, Francisco; Lumini Landeiro, Maria José; Sousa, Maria Rui; Peixoto, Maria José; Freire, R.M.A.; Pinto Martins Salazar Almeida, Berta Maria; Fernandes, Carla Sílvia; Araújo, F.Aim: To evaluate students' self- perceived pedagogical outcomes when using a digital scenario- based tool compared to traditional scenarios printed on paper. Design: This study used a within- subjects experiment. Method: A digital platform for scenario development was developed, focusing on patients' regaining independence and returning home after an acute event. Students participated in two simulation activities, differing only in the type of scenario used and completed a questionnaire to evaluate their learning experience. Results: Students considered that the new scenario template provided a clearer understanding of the situation under analysis, allowing them to recognize the focuses of attention to be prioritized when formulating the intervention plan. No Patient or Public Contribution: A digital platform for a standardized process of scenario writing to help realistic simulation in nursing education is a novelty in this study and will likely contribute to substantial learning gains.
- A generalized resistance resource: faith. A nursing viewPublication . Encarnação, Paula; Oliveira, Clara C.; Martins, TeresaBased on Aaron Antonovsky's salutogenic model, the authors of this article aim to analyze the term Faith as a Generalized Resistance Resource (GRR) of people's health and to delve the relevance of this construct to clinical practice in Nursing. The authors consider that, in order for nurses to intervene in the promotion of faith so as to bring health benefits to people, a solid educational training in this subject area is required by nursing students.
