Publication . Linhares, Francisca Márcia Pereira; Abreu, Wilson; Melo, Priscila de Oliveira Cabral; Mendes, Ryanne Carolynne Marques Gomes; Silva, Thaís Araújo da; Gusmão, Tarcila Lima Alcântara de; Guedes, Tatiane Gomes
Objectives: to demonstrate the effectiveness of educational interventions in knowledge, attitude and practice for preventing respiratory infections in adults and older adults. Methods: this is a systematic review carried out in 11 databases. Primary studies, without language and time restrictions, of the randomized, non-randomized and before-and-after clinical trial type, were selected. The risk of bias was assessed by two independent researchers, and the methodological quality was generated by the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation. Results: the intervention effectiveness was evidenced in seven studies. The results of the random effects meta-analysis show that there is a statistically significant difference between knowledge about preventing respiratory diseases, with an OR of 2.82 (95%CI 1.70 to 4.69) for the occurrence of events represented by improved knowledge. Conclusions: most studies show the effectiveness of educational interventions, which was determined through the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice survey
  • Birth-related PTSD symptoms and related factors following preterm childbirth in Turkey
Publication . Gökçe İsbir, Gözde; İnci, Figen; Kömürcü Akik, Burcu; Abreu, Wilson; Thomson, Gill
Abstract Objective: To examine factors associated with birth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among women who had preterm birth in their last pregnancy in Turkey. Methods: 304 women were asked to report sociodemographic factors, perinatal factors, birth-related factors, preterm birth/premature infant characteristics, and social support factors and PTSD symptoms. Data were collected using online surveys between November 2020 and February 2021. Hierarchical multiple linear regression was used. Results: The prevalence of birth-related PTSD symptoms following preterm birth was 71.1%. Older age, the woman being positively affected by her own mother’s birth experience, not having traumatic experience in pregnancy and in the postnatal period, lower stress level after traumatic events experienced during birth, not feeling that their life/physical integrity was at risk during birth, having amniotomy, feeling psychologically well after childbirth, not being negatively affected by witnessing other parents’ happy moments with their babies in friend/family groups, the absence of infant illness and mother’s reporting higher positive interactions with healthcare team were associated with decreased likelihood of birth-related PTSD. Except for age and traumatic event in the postnatal period, all the variables explained 43% of the variance with a small effect size (f2 = 0.04). Stress level after the traumatic events experienced during labor was the strongest predictor of birth-related PTSD symptoms (β = 0.33). Conclusion: Wellbeing of mother and baby, facilitating interventions at labor, and positive communication with the healthcare team was associated with lower birth-related PTSD symptoms. The study findings highlighted on birth-related PTSD symptoms in mothers of preterm infants in Turkey.
  • An Intelligent Multicriteria Model for Diagnosing Dementia in People Infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus
Publication . Pinheiro, Luana I. C. C.; Pereira, Maria Lúcia D.; Andrade, Evandro C. de; Nunes, Luciano C.; Abreu, Wilson; Pinheiro, Pedro Gabriel Calíope D.; Holanda Filho, Raimir; Pinheiro, Plácido Rogerio
Hybrid models to detect dementia based on Machine Learning can provide accurate diagnoses in individuals with neurological disorders and cognitive complications caused by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. This study proposes a hybrid approach, using Machine Learning algorithms associated with the multicriteria method of Verbal Decision Analysis (VDA). Dementia, which affects many HIV-infected individuals, refers to neurodevelopmental and mental disorders. Some manuals standardize the information used in the correct detection of neurological disorders with cognitive complications. Among the most common manuals used are the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition) of the American Psychiatric Association and the International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition (ICD-10)—both published byWorld Health Organization (WHO). The model is designed to explore the predictive of specific data. Furthermore, a well-defined database data set improves and optimizes the diagnostic models sought in the research.
  • Psychoeducational programs for informal caregivers of dependent older adults: Barriers to participation
Publication . Abreu, Margarida; Silva, Alcione Leite; Costa, Nilza; Abreu, Wilson
Psychoeducational programs (PEP) are recommended to provide support to informal caregivers. Evidences show low levels of participation in such programs. Removing barriers is necessary to promote effective programs. The research questions were as follows: what are the barriers to the participation of caregivers of dependent older adults in a PEP? What are the factors that motivate caregivers to participate in a PEP? The main purpose of this study was to analyze the barriers to the participation of informal caregivers of dependent older adults in a PEP and to identify the factors that promote the participation of informal caregivers of dependent older adults in a PEP. A qualitative approach was used for this study, conducted with twenty-four informal caregivers of dependent older adults registered at a Family Health Unit in Trofa County, Portugal. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. For the analysis of empirical material, the content analysis technique proposed by Bardin was used. The “situational” barriers to the participation were most prevalent (need to escort the care recipient to medical visits, cost of transportation, lack of time due to caregiving tasks, or professional activity). The factors that favored participation mostly corresponded to the “psychosocial” (interest in acquiring additional knowledge and skills) and “institutional” categories (interest in the program content). The results demonstrate that inclusion of the participants in the design, implementation, and assessment of the program, as was the case, did not suffice to facilitate the program participation - the multiple barriers to their participation should also have been taken into account. Only by recognizing such barriers will the program become more effective and efficient for the caregivers.

  • Effective Mentorship to Improve Clinical Decision Making and a Positive Identity: A Comparative Study in Turkey and Portugal
Publication . Abreu, Wilson; Interpeler, Seyda Seren
Abstract—In some countries there is a growing concern about the shortage of nurses and the students dropping out. Research evidences show the importance of clinical education and mentorship in shaping nurses' identity and promote retention. The purpose of this exploratory study is to compare the mentorship system in two different organizations. Participants were 261 students, 126 from Porto and 135 from Izmir. To gather data a questionnaire was used (CLASI-M). Findings of this study suggest that although nursing students appear to be satisfied with their clinical learning, they have notorious difficulties to understand the meaning of complex care and factors which give rise to complexity. At the end of the study, some specific hypotheses were indicated to be tested in future research. Suggestions are made for improving the quality of the mentorship systems in nursing education.
  • Nurses's knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding hepatitis B: an integrative review
Publication . Oliveira, Vanessa Moura Carvalho de; Gomes, Cecília Natielly da Silva; Rocha, Daniel de Macêdo; Abreu, Wilson; Galvão, Marli Teresinha Gimeniz; Magalhães, Rosilane de Lima Brito
Objective: to analyze, in the literature, the nurses’ knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding Hepatitis B. Method: an integrative review, with search and selection conducted independently by peers, after electronic queries in the CINAHL, MEDLINE, SCOPUS, Web of Science, LILACS, BDENF and IBECS databases in January 2021. The sample consisted in 15 primary studies published with no time or language restrictions. Analysis and synthesis of the results were carried out in a descriptive manner. Results: limitations in knowledge, inconsistent attitudes and commonly neglected assistance-related practices were identified, related to prevention, immunization and biosafety measures, to risk management and to monitoring of symptoms and complications, which contributed to greater occupational exposure. Among the associated factors, low participation in permanent education activities, training level, working conditions, limitations in the availability of immunization tests (anti-HBs) and underreporting of health problems stood out. Conclusion: the knowledge, attitudes and practices developed by nurses in relation to Hepatitis B proved to be limited and inconsistent, which may result in greater occupational exposure, as well as exert a direct impact on vaccination coverage and occurrence of incidents.
  • Perception of caregivers of persons with schizophrenia about a health education program
Publication . Lomeo, Roselane; Costa, Nilza; Abreu, Wilson
The mental health policy of Brazil has been guided by the search for citizenship, social equality and autonomy of the individuals with mental disorders and it started with the deinstitutionalization process. On the other hand, this paradigm shift contributed to making the patients stay in the family environment and thus the need for family members to play the role of caregivers. The attributions of these care functions have contributed to a physical and emotional overload. Using a psychoeducational approach focused on the family member/caregiver of people with schizophrenia, this study proposed to check the caregivers' perception about the importance of the practice of relaxation activities for the promotion of selfcare. The intervention was performed during a six-month period. Participants were 31 family caregivers of mental health cohabitation centers in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Using the relatives’ reports about the perception of the intervention, categories were listed and treated with the support of the software webQDA. The results revealed through the family members' perception, that the intervention program provided them with contributions such as wellbeing, self-control over impulses, increased self-esteem, and encouragement for self-care. The literature reinforces that the educational practice in health is composed of educational activities aimed at the development of individual and collective capacities aimed at improving the health and quality of life of people. The intervention program with relaxation exercises contributed to an improved physical and mental health for family caregivers, awakening them to self-care
