Abstract(s)
This study aimed to investigate how the practices of occupational health and safety in Residential Structures for the elderly are perceived by their managers and employees. To answer this question, we developed a Questionnaire for employees of 4 institutions (profit and non-profit), and we had got a sample of 51 respondents. It was performed an analysis of internal consistency and validity of the Questionnaire based on eight questions structured according to three factors (organizational, professional and individual), which constituted the eight variables in our study: 1 - Management Commitment 2 - Communication, 3 - Participation of Employees 4 - Training / Information; 5 - Motivation, 6 - Observation of Safety Procedures; 7 - Organization of Learning and Organisational Change and 8 - Managing the transition. These variables allowed the acknowledgement of the colaborators perceptions on the safety culture in the institutions and their contribution in preventing incidents. The analysis of the answers confirmed that the employees recognized the existence of hazards in the performance of their activities, and some said they did not know what behaviors and attitudes appropriate for certain work situations. They felt that safety training was essential in order to feel confident to report unsafe acts and thus to avoid recurrence. It was concluded that there were no significant differences in safety performance between managers and workers, regardless of age, sex, qualifications, seniority in the organization and function, as well as in various nonprofit and profit entities. The lack of training of employees and the leadership skills of management were referred to as the main obstacles in the elimination of the difficulties in understanding and monitoring of hazards and risks identified. The Employee Communication and Participation are the variables that showed strong motivations for compliance with legislation and practices for safe behaviors. The current trend in these institutions is towards the implementation of safety systems consistent with the standard OHSAS 18001:2007 / NP 4397:2008 - requirements of occupational health and safety management systems, with managers motivated to achieve them.
