- Nursing Interventions to Promote Self-Care in a Candidate for a Bowel Elimination Ostomy: Scoping ReviewPublication . Soares-Pinto, Igor; Queirós, Sílvia; Alves, Paulo; Manuel, Tânia; Santos, Célia; Brito, AliceObjectives: To identify nursing interventions, their characteristics, and outcomes for promoting self-care in candidates for a bowel elimination ostomy. Materials and methods: A scoping review was carried out based on the Joanna Briggs Institute’s recommendations. For this, studies published in Portuguese, English, and Spanish on the Web of Science, CINAHL, and Scopus databases and without a time limit were selected on November 9, 2020. Results: Of 2248 articles identified, 41 were included in this review. We identified 20 nursing interventions associated with the self-care of patients with an ostomy; most of them have gaps in their content, method, and frequency or dosing. More than 30 indicators were identified to assess the impact of nursing interventions; however, most of them were indirect assessments. Conclusion: There is scarce evidence regarding the different aspects that must be involved in nursing interventions for patients with a stoma. Moreover, there is no standardization in methods, frequency, or dosing of intervention. It is urgent to define the content, method, and frequency of nursing interventions necessary to promote self-care in patients with a bowel elimination ostomy and to use assessment tools that directly measure stoma self-care competence
- Self-care competence of patients with an intestinal stoma in the preoperative fasePublication . Silva, Carla; Santos, Célia; Brito, Alice; Cardoso, Teresa; Lopes, JoanaBackground: Patients undergoing intestinal stoma formation need to develop their stoma self-care competence. This competence should start being developed during the preoperative phase. Objective: To identify patients’ stoma self-care competence in the preoperative phase, particularly on the day before ostomy surgery. Methodology: Quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. Non-probability sampling technique with 50 participants. Data were collected using the assessment form of the Self-Care Competence of the Person with an Intestinal Stoma (CAO-EI: ESEP). Results: The level of knowledge represents the self-care competence of patients with an intestinal stoma in the preoperative phase of an ostomy surgery. Conclusion: The multidimensional nature of the self-care competence of patients with intestinal stoma justifies exploring other domains of this competence besides knowledge in the preoperative phase given the identified benefits on the process of adaptation after surgery

- Representação do conhecimento em enfermagem do trabalho: dados relevantes face à saúde individual do trabalhador sob influência do ambiente laboralPublication . Bastos, Fernanda; Morais, Ernesto; Joana Campos, Maria; Brito, Alice; Cardoso, Alexandrina; Sousa, P.Introduction: Occupational health presents itself as a whole area to ensure healthy work environments and a better quality of life for workers. In the information systems in use, it was found that this area was missing, and a representation of existing knowledge in occupational nursing is urgent, particularly concerning the data that allow the characterization of health needs in a work environment. Objectives: Formally represent the available knowledge related to data relating to the assessment of the client under the influence of the work environment, which represent the first element of the planning and description of the nursing care process, thus constituting a fundamental resource for the design of clinical decision support systems. Methodology: This work derives from a global project developed by the Center for Research and Development of Information Systems at the Porto School of Nursing, in collaboration with the Ordem dos Enfermeiros, which consolidated itself in the construction of a Nursing Ontology. A qualitative study of inferential nature was carried out for its conception, with content analysis to national parameterization and literature review. For content validation, a focus group was used. Results: Nineteen assessment data were identified, most of which could generate sensitive indicators for nursing care, organized into three domains: i) data related to the characterization of the work activity, its context and physical intensity; ii) data related to occupational exposure potentially leading to changes in bodily and psychological processes; and iii) data that characterize aspects related to health-seeking behaviours related to the adaptive process (transition) of the client in the work context, such as knowledge and awareness. Conclusions: The identification of data is decisive for the diagnostic process, with centrality in the characterization of the data centred on physical intensity and exposure to risk factors in the work activity and the adaptive process related to areas that will influence the choice of health-promoting behaviours.
- Psychometric Properties of the Form Development of Self-Care Competence of the Person with a Bowel Elimination OstomyPublication . Pinto, Igor; Santos, Célia; Brito, Alice; Queirós, SílviaBackground: The use of an instrument to assess the self-care competence in patients with bowel elimination ostomy allows for the systematic identification of their specific needs, ensuring the continuity of nursing care. Although an instrument that assesses the domains that integrate this competence has been developed in Portugal, it has not yet been validated. Objectives: To assess the psychometric properties of the form Development of Self-Care Competence of the Person with a Bowel Elimination Ostomy. Methodology: Methodological study aimed at analyzing the psychometric properties of a measurement instrument, written in Portuguese. Results: The Cronbach’s alpha was 0.95 and the inter-rater reliability showed a correlation greater than or equal to 0.98. A statistically significant correlation was found in the split-half test, as well as in the clinical sensitivity analysis. Conclusion: The form presented good psychometric indicators, which suggests that it is a useful tool to be used in the nursing diagnosis process, thus contributing to the optimization of nursing care.
- Development of a Form to Assess the Self-Care Competence of the Person with a TracheostomyPublication . Queirós, Sílvia; Santos, Célia; Brito, Alice; Pinto, IgorBackground: The development of the self-care competence in the person with a tracheostomy is described as a key driver for a healthy transition to life with a tracheostomy. An instrument for assessing the self-care competence of the person with a tracheostomy contributes to nurses’ decision-making and promotes the quality of care. Objectives: To develop a tool for assessing the self-care competence of the person with a tracheostomy. Methodology: A methodological study was conducted. Content validity was obtained through the judgment of experts, with a focus group methodology. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The instrument was applied to a sample of 80 participants, using a non-probability convenience sampling technique. Results: The study resulted in a form with 39 indicators, divided into 6 areas, which showed good internal consistency (alpha = 0.89) and recognised content validity. Conclusion: The final version of the form is applicable, and has the potential to be used in future studies on its validity.

- Living with an ileostomy: a case study on the transition processPublication . Silva, Carla; Sousa, Florbela; Lima, Jorge; Pinto, Maria; Brito, Alice; Cruz, InêsBackground: An ileostomy affects the person’s identity, leading to a process of transition. The person’s response to transition, as the subject of nursing study, should be explored, as well as the context in which the transition is experienced. Objective: To describe and understand the transition phenomenon experienced by a person with an ileostomy and diagnosed with familial adenomatous polyposis, based on Afaf Meleis’ Transition Model. Methodology: An instrumental case study was conducted using the qualitative research paradigm. The case was selected through a convenience sampling strategy and data were collected through observation, analysis of the electronic nursing records, and semi-structured interviews. Results: The person and the context involved in the transition process are two non-recurring realities that influence its course. Conclusion: Afaf Meleis’ Transition Model allows understanding the transition process experienced by the ileostomy patient in terms of nature, conditions, and response patterns of transitions.
