- Empower Girls Creativity Through Use of Digital Technologies: A Learning Programme for Girls (SparkDigiGirls)Publication . Marques, C. G.; Araújo, Inês; Grineviciute, Laura; Dane, Brigita; Danieliene, RenataResearch shows that girls choose their professional future based on stereotypes, often under the family influence. The area of technology is the one where we find fewer girls, due to the lack of role models or examples of successful women. In response to this need, a group of partners involving universities and associations from Lithuania, Slovenia, Greece, and Portugal developed a project over two years. It started with a compilation of good practices and round table discussions with people who are relevant in the subject area in each country. With the data collected, it was possible to identify subjects and technologies to develop a learning programme for girls. A programme of 16 challenges was developed based on girls' interests that could be solved using technology. The Moodle platform was used to set up the whole structure. Each challenge includes theoretical information about the technology through video. Followed by tutorials where girls can learn how to use the tools. In the end, they must submit evidence of the challenge and fill in a quiz that tests their knowledge. A pilot test was then conducted with 279 girls from the four countries, aged between 14 and 18, for 2 months. The results were very positive, with the girls showing a change of view towards technology. All this experience made it possible to create a guidebook for mentors and organizations that work with girls, which will allow them to attract more girls to the area of technology.
- Implementation Measures of EU Strategy for Sustainable TourismPublication . Almeida, Paula; Pires da Silva, Cláudia; Dionísio, Marta; Marques, C. G.All over Europe it became clear that tourism is a cross-cuting economic activity with a wide-ranging impact on the environment and climate and on the EU´s economy as a whole. The tourism industry directly or indirectly employs 27 million people which accounts for 11.2% of total EU employment and helps to promote a positive regional development and contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, social welfare and economic security of local communities. As tourism and transport industries were among those most affected by Covid-19, as a result to restriction on travel, as a way to control the spreading of virus, it was clear that measures will be stronger as a part of a coordinated EU strategy. In this study we will approach the EU legislation that has been approved to create a common frame work for essential and non-essential travel, enabling the industry to adapt and apply compliant hygiene measures and the implementation in EU member states. Only by providing the EU and its Member States with a factual overview and data for policymakers, they will feel enable to devise informed strategies, based on collected and analysed tourism data.
- And after the master's? Some issues regarding the access to the profession of conservator-restorer in PortugalPublication . Cruz, António João; Desterro, TeresaIn order to contribute to the knowledge concerning problems faced by those who complete a master’s degree in conservation-restoration and intend to enter the labor market, the Portuguese case is presented. Thus, the formative offer and the legislative requirements are introduced as well as a real situation in which the majority of works are treated by those who do not have sufficient education in conservation-restoration. The article also discusses the lack of visibility of conservator-restorers and the image they have as artists when they are recognized. It is argued that this image leads to restoration being considered an activity that is accessible to all, an idea that is fed by numerous short courses, volunteer programs, and even some undergraduate and graduate courses that do not meet the basic requirements of ENCoRE. Finally, the ways in which a conservator-restorer can enter the labor market as well as the changes that seem to be underway in this field are mentioned.
- Assistive Robotic Hand Orthosis (ARHO) controlled with EMG: evaluation of a preliminary prototype*Publication . Farinha, Diogo; Dias, Joao; Neves, Pedro; Pereira, Katia; Ferreira, Carlos; Pires, GabrielHand impairment severely limits basic activities of daily living (ADL). The use of motorized hand orthoses may provide enough functional assistance to perform basic tasks, such as grasping objects. Several prototypes have been proposed in the last decade, but there are still no solutions with the desired features regarding the weight, wearability and functionality. This paper describes the overall implementation of a prototype of an assistive robotic hand orthosis (ARHO) for object grasping, that can be triggered manually or by the detection of muscular activity in the forearm using surface electromyography (sEMG). The system is being specifically designed for a case study of a person with hemiplegia resulting from a peri-insular hemispherectomy. The proposed orthosis is a very preliminary but functional prototype, still far from the desired features mentioned above, but serves to show all the modules composing a low-cost implementation, and above all, to understand all the constraints and difficulties in designing such a system.
- Development of Learning Objects for Library and Information Sciences by Posgraduate StudentsPublication . Marques, C. G.; Carvalho, Ana Amélia AmorimThe concept of learning object has changed the way teaching materials are created, developed and distributed. This approach can contribute to an improvement in the quality of teaching/learning and data dissemination without the stakeholders needing to be technology experts. This paper aims to describe and evaluate learning objects created by students of the Digital Content, Documentation and Archiving module of the postgraduate course in Library and Information Sciences offered by the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar in 2011/2012. The paper also presents students' feedback about the training provided, the use of eXeLearning, cataloguing of the learning object, its upload to a repository and its use in a professional context. The results show that students have welcomed this technology. They have considered the training provided as appropriate and found eXeLearning easy to use, as well as the cataloguing of the learning object with metadata and its upload to a repository. Most participants considered using learning objects in their own working contexts.
