Abstract: The new civilizational wave reflects a course deviation concerning the attention given to the power of information, leaving behind other sources of power. Like in previous times, military organizations quickly adopted the new concepts, realizing the value and sharing of information in order to enable combat sucess. This investigation intends to evaluate if the recent Portuguese Air Force weapon systems and modernization programs have complied with the technical requirements imposed by the new NATO guidelines, supported by global information networks, in order to assure interoperability between national forces and Alliance member states, in an hipothetic networked-centric warfare scenario. The conclusions of the investigation show that the researched air assets, despite the effort made by the Portuguese Air Force trying to reach the goals established by the Atlantic Organization, can only comply with low and medium levels of interoperability, when referenced to the technical degree applied to the weapon systems.
- Effects of attentional focus on the regulation of torque complexityPublication . Bauer, Philipp; Gomes, João S.; Oliveira, João H.; Santos, Paulo; Pezarat-Correia, Pedro; Vaz, João R.Recent scientific evidence suggests that an external focus of attention (vs. an internal focus of attention) promotes a greater number of motor solutions, rendering the system more adaptable and complex. Therefore, the present study investigated the effect of the attentional focus (external vs. internal) on torque complexity and variability as well as its associated intermuscular coordination processes. Fourteen participants performed maximal and submaximal isometric knee extension tasks in three conditions (control, external focus, internal focus) to assess immediate effects of the focus of attention in a within-subjects comparison. Peak torque was extracted from maximal trials. Regarding submaximal trials, torque complexity and the magnitude of variability were assessed through Sample Entropy (SampEn), i.e., a measure of regularity in the temporal structure of torque output and coefficient of variation (CV), respectively. The intermuscular coordination was assessed through co-contraction index. An external focus led to an increase in SampEn (i.e., decreased regularity) when compared to an internal focus (p = 0.032) and a control condition (p = 0.036). Conversely, no differences were found for CV and peak torque. The external focus promoted a decrease in muscular activity of vastus medialis in comparison with the internal focus (p = 0.040) and an increase in muscular activity when compared to the control condition (p < 0.001). Furthermore, an external focus led to decreased muscular activity of semitendinosus as well as a decrease in the co-contraction indices involving semitendinosus in comparison with the internal focus and the control condition (all p < 0.05). The present findings suggest that an external focus leads to an enhanced flexibility of motor control. Moreover, the general decrease in co-contraction and in muscular activity without affecting maximal force parameters that we observed with an external focus suggest a higher efficiency of the motor system caused by intermuscular coordination processes.
- Impact of the optimal minimum velocity threshold on the accuracy of one repetition maximum estimation-based on a mixed modelPublication . Fitas, Afonso; Gomes, Miguel; Santos, Paulo; Vila-Chã, Carolina; Pezarat-Correia, Pedro; Mendonça, Gonçalo V.Purpose: This study aimed at developing two mixed methods approaches for 1RM prediction (generalized equations together with the individual load–velocity relationship—LVR). The validity of such equations was explored and compared with the validity of individual LVRs. Methods: The submaximal LVRs of seventy-six males was obtained for the free-weight back squat. Theoretical load at zero velocity (LD0), the slope of the individual LVR, and the individual (ModelIND) and optimal minimum velocity thresholds (MVT) (ModelOPT) were selected to develop the equations. Prediction accuracy was determined through mean differences, absolute percent errors and Bland–Altman plots. Results: ModelIND was predictive of 1RM (p < 0.0001), explaining 89.7% of its variance. ModelOPT increased the prediction power of 1RM to 98.7% (p < 0.0001). No significant differences in the absolute percent errors were found (4.7 and 3.9%, for ModelIND and ModelOPT, respectively). The mean difference between actual and estimated 1RM was nearly zero for both models, while individual LVRs relying on the individual MVT displayed the contrary. The limits of agreement were 15.1 and 11.4 kg for ModelIND and ModelOPT, respectively. Conclusion: The individual and optimal MVTs add predictive value to LD0 and the slope of the individual LVR for 1RM estimation on a group level and avoid error trends over the entire muscular strength spectrum. However, only ModelIND increased the accuracy of estimations when compared with the more direct approach. From a practical standpoint, practitioners are encouraged to rely on the individual LVR instead of ModelOPT, when using the optimal MVT for estimation purposes.

- Load forecasting in electrical distribution: grid of medium voltagePublication . Chemetova, Svetlana; Santos, Paulo; Ventim-Neves, MárioThe importance of forecasting has become more evident with the appearance of the open electricity market and the restructuring of the national energy sector. This paper presents a new approach to load forecasting in the medium voltage distribution network in Portugal. The forecast horizon is short term, from 24 hours up to a week. The forecast method is based on the combined use of a regression model and artificial neural networks (ANN). The study was done with the time series of telemetry data of the DSO (EDP Distribution) and climatic records from IPMA (Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere), applied for the urban area of Évora - one of the first Smart Cities in Portugal. The performance of the proposed methodology is illustrated by graphical results and evaluated with statistical indicators. The error (MAPE) was lower than 5%, meaning that chosen methodology clearly validate the feasibility of the test.

- Plagiarism Detection in Algorithms - a Case Study using AlgorithmiPublication . Manso, António; Marques, C. G.; Santos, Paulo; Alencar, VitorLearning to program is crucial in computer science degree programmes. For students to gain this skill, they need to practise a lot, since programming is a difficult and complex process and practice improves it. The courses "Algorithmics" and "Introduction to programming" have therefore become almost insurmountable barriers with high failure rates. To overcome these barriers, researchers have sought to find new ways of teaching. For their part, students have looked for ways to succeed with less effort by repeatedly resorting to plagiarism. The need for classes to be taught remotely due to the pandemic has further aggravated this problem. To fight it, we created the Algorithmi tool and equipped it with a plagiarism detection module. This tool promotes stand-alone study by allowing self-correction of the exercises whilst validating authorship. This paper presents a case study on the application of the plagiarism module to the exercise resolutions submitted by the students in their personal repository. Through the analysis of the results obtained we can conclude that there was a high rate of plagiarism. The current version of the tool needs to be extended with new features, not only to become more accurate, but above all to prevent plagiarism from happening.
