- Analysing the influence of WHO initiatives on the scientific discourse of noncommunicable diseases through a bibliometric approachPublication . Santos, Ana Teresa; Costa, Cátia Miriam; Delgado-Márquez, Luisa; Banheiro, Raquel MariaNoncommunicable diseases (NCDs) present a major public health challenge, prompting their inclusion in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In response, the World Health Organization (WHO) has implemented various initiatives, including a comprehensive monitoring framework with global targets and indicators. However, the extent to which these initiatives have shaped the scientific discourse remains unclear. This article addresses this knowledge gap through a two-fold approach. Firstly, a bibliometric analysis of 14,187 studies spanning over 60 years is conducted, identifying key contributors and trends. Secondly, the content analysis compares these trends to the goals established by the WHO. The findings indicate that the WHO initiatives have accelerated scientific research, and elevated global targets and indicators as central themes in scholarly discussions, since 2011. This study takes an innovative approach that contributes to the advancement of knowledge in this field, by providing valuable insights into the impact of WHO initiatives on the scientific debate surrounding NCDs, and offering guidance for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders engaged in combating these diseases.
- Building multiscalar sustainable ocean governance : how do global perspectives interact with the Portuguese national approach?Publication . Costa, Cátia Miriam; Santos, Ana TeresaUNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission launched the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development in 2021 to boost global and sustainable Ocean governance. The initiative resulted from historical and political dynamics at the global and lower political scales, with maritime environmental and economic concerns becoming more prominent in 2010. The Ocean Decade's pillars include science and research, sustainability, conservation, and bridging gaps for a global Ocean-Climate-Biodiversity nexus. The Sustainable Development Goals recognized the importance of oceans and marine resources, and the Ocean was officially perceived as a determining factor of Climate Change at CoP 21 in 2015. Portugal has built integrated and far-reaching policies for ocean governance, including significant involvement with an international perspective since the Lisbon World Exhibition in 1998. In addition, the national government established a Ministry of the Sea in 2015 to re-develop relations with its maritime space. This article analyzes and compares the discourse of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals reports and the Portuguese government programs (2005–2022) to explore the prominent trends in Portuguese Ocean governance discourse and how global and national perspectives interact. Through this case study, the research aims to develop insights into the multiscalar impacts of promoting global and sustainable Ocean governance and its interaction with national perspectives.

Esta dissertação tem também como intuito mostrar a possibilidade de que a função do Design não reside apenas na imagem e que envolve um processo para além da estética. Hoje o Design, é provavelmente uma disciplina indispensável no mundo da Publicidade. Apesar de uma marca residir na mente do consumidor, o facto é que a mesma possui sempre uma imagem associada a ela na mente deste através do design do logótipo, de embalagem, produto, entre outros. O Design, é possivelmente uma forma de cultura que influencia o nosso quotidiano, seja nas nossas crenças, estilo de vida ou até nas nossas aspirações.
- Keeping a close watch on innovation studies : opening the black box of journal editorshipsPublication . Santos, Ana Teresa; Mendonça, SandroEditors are journals’ entrepreneurs, managers, and stewards. They have the duty of holding high standards of scholarly quality in terms of end product (articles) and due process (adequate peer-review procedures). Given the importance of journals in the contemporary science “ecosystem,” editors emerge as decisive power brokers. Elite board members are scrutinizers but, paradoxically, they are themselves seldom subject to systematic study. This paper presents a comprehensive portrait of the editorship phenomenon in Innovation Studies by probing the structural features of the boards of 20 leading innovation-oriented journals as of 2019 and conducting an editor survey. We account for 2,440 individual editors in 3,005 different roles based in 53 countries. We uncover the overwhelming dominance of U.S.-affiliated editors and the contrasting rare presence of scholars from the Global South. The gender balance tilts toward men, with a weight above 60%. Enhanced journal achievement is associated with editors on multiple boards, diverse national representation, and increased women on boards. Almost 20% of scholars serve on multiple boards, and no single journal is free from this interlocking editorship phenomenon. The journal Research Policy is the most central in the cross-board network, followed by Industrial and Corporate Change. Finally, the implications of editormetrics for journal governance are discussed.
- Multidisciplinary applications of AI in dentistry : bibliometric reviewPublication . Allani, Hela; Santos, Ana Teresa; Ribeiro-Vidal, HonoratoThis review explores the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in dentistry, reflecting on its potential to reshape traditional practices and meet the increasing demands for high-quality dental care. The aim of this research is to examine how AI has evolved in dentistry over the past two decades, driven by two pivotal questions: “What are the current emerging trends and developments in AI in dentistry?” and “What implications do these trends have for the future of AI in the dental field?”. Utilizing the Scopus database, a bibliometric analysis of the literature from 2000 to 2023 was conducted to address these inquiries. The findings reveal a significant increase in AI-related publications, especially between 2018 and 2023, underscoring a rapid expansion in AI applications that enhance diagnostic precision and treatment planning. Techniques such as Deep Learning (DL) and Neural Networks (NN) have transformed dental practices by enhancing diagnostic precision and reducing workload. AI technologies, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), have improved the accuracy of radiographic analysis, from detecting dental pathologies to automating cephalometric evaluations, thereby optimizing treatment outcomes. This advocacy is underpinned by the need for AI applications in dentistry to be both efficacious and ethically sound, ensuring that they not only improve clinical outcomes but also adhere to the highest standards of patient care.
