- Antenatal care policies for low-risk pregnant women in high-income countries with a universal health system: a scoping review protocolPublication . Gonçalves, Andreia Soares; Ferreira, Isabel Maria; Pestana-Santos, Márcia; Prata, Ana Paula; McCourt, ChristineObjective: The aim of this scoping review is to map the available evidence on the nature, extent, and range of antenatal care policies for low-risk pregnant women in high-income countries with a health system founded on the Beveridge Model. Introduction: Low-risk women in high-income countries have good evolutionary perinatal outcomes but high intervention rates in pregnancy and childbirth, which ultimately leads to high morbidity. This has implications at all levels including families, the health care system, and society. This review aims to inform future policy and identify the viability of the adoption of alternative models to the Portuguese context that can reduce unnecessary interventions. Inclusion criteria: Studies, protocols, guidelines, and policies that provide guidance on antenatal care for low-risk pregnant women in high-income countries with a health system founded on the Beveridge Model (universal health care) will be considered. Documents from 2005 to present will be included, and no language restrictions will be imposed. Methods: An initial search will be conducted in databases including MEDLINE (via PubMed) and CINAHL (via EBSCOhost), followed by a manual search of the reference lists from the documents accepted for inclusion, and a hand search of gray literature. For the countries whose policies are not available through the earlier steps, key persons from health ministries and academia will be contacted. Search results will be exported and data extracted using charting forms. Data will be synthesized using narrative description.
- Antenatal care policy in high-income countries with a universal health system: A scoping reviewPublication . Goncalves, Andreia Soares; Ferreira, Isabel Maria; Pestana-Santos, Márcia; McCourt, Christine; Prata, Ana PaulaThe availability, effectiveness, and access to antenatal care are directly linked with good maternal and neonatal outcomes, making antenatal care an important determinant in health. But to be effective, care must always be appropriate, not excessive, not insufficient. Perinatal outcomes vary within and between countries, raising questions about practices, the use of best evidence in clinical decisions and the existence of clear and updated guidance. Through a scoping review methodology, this study aimed to map the available antenatal care policies for lowrisk pregnant women in high-income countries with a universal health system, financed by the government through tax payments. Following searches on the main databases and grey literature, the authors identified and analysed ten antenatal care policies using a previously piloted datachart: Australia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Some policies were over 10 years old, some recommendations did not present a rationale or context, others were outdated, or were simply different approaches in the absence of strong evidence. Whilst some recommendations were ubiquitous, others differed either in the recommendation provided, the timing, or the frequency. Similarly, we found wide variation in the methods/strategy used to support the recommendations provided. These results confirm that best evidence is not always assimilated into policies and clinical guidance. Further research crossing these differences with perinatal outcomes and evaluation of cost could be valuable to optimise guidance on antenatal care. Similarly, some aspects of care need further rigorous studies to obtain evidence of higher quality to inform recommendations.

- Barriers and facilitators to the implementation of a midwifery-led-care model: a qualitative systematic review protocolPublication . Goncalves, Andreia Soares; McCourt, Christine; Pestana-Santos, Márcia; Prata, Ana PaulaIntroduction: Midwifery models of care are sustainable, cost-effective, safe, and effective models of care that have long been regarded as adequate and recommended for the care of women with uncomplicated pregnancies. The implementation of such models has, however, been very slow in countries where a medicalized culture towards pregnancy and birth prevails. Since there is no systematized evidence that examines the barriers and facilitators to the implementation of midwifery models of care. Objective: Identify and synthesize the literature on barriers and facilitators perceived by stakeholders to the implementation of a midwifery-led-care model in a healthcare system. Methods: The review will consider qualitative, and mixed methods studies. For the mix-methods studies only the qualitative component will be included in the review. No date limits will be applied. Studies written in English, Spanish and Portuguese will be included. The databases to be searched will include CINAHL (EBSCOhost), MEDLINE (EBSCOhost), PsycINFO (EBSCOhost), and Web of Science (EBSCO). Sources of grey literature include ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, and relevant organizational websites. Study selection, critical appraisal, data extraction, and data synthesis will be performed independently by 2 reviewers. The synthesized findings will be graded according to the ConQual approach for establishing confidence in findings. Discussion: We anticipate that our systematic review will provide guidance for the implementation of midwifery-led care models in any healthcare setting. Conclusion: This protocol sets out the planning and documents the methodology the researchers will employ in this systematic review.
- Building trust to childbirth: assessment of a nursing intervention programmePublication .
- Conflict management strategies used by Portuguese nurse managersPublication . Martins, MM; Trindade, Letícia De Lima; Vandresen, Lara; Amestoy, Simone Coelho; Prata, Ana Paula; Vilela, CarlosObjectives: to analyze the perception and conflict management strategies used by nurses in the management of people in Portuguese health services. Methods: descriptive, correlational study, carried out in Portuguese health services, with an intentional non-probabilistic sample, totaling 95 nurse managers. A questionnaire and Conflict Management Scale were used, analyzing the variables of managerial activities and conflict management, with the aid of software. Results: it was identified that 60% of the managers, report having to mediate conflicts daily, and the majority report adopting dialogue in conduct. However, through the Kruskal-Wallis test, it was shown that enforcement strategies in conflict management prevail (p = 0.008), with collaborative ones being more restricted to monthly intervals (p = 0.049). Conclusions: managers perceive the importance of collaboration in the mediation of conflicts, however, in their daily lives; they tend to maintain imposing behaviors, signaling for a little transformational leadership style.
- Construção e validação de um objeto de aprendizagem para enfermeirosPublication . Reis Santos, Margarida; Koch, Maria Cândida; Prata, Ana PaulaIn today’s societies, health care is increasingly culturally diverse due to the increasing migratory processes of the population and nurses. Therefore, it is necessary to train nurses to provide culturally competent care. Learning objects are didactic, multimedia, interactive and challenging materials that constitute relevant resources for the teaching-learning processes that go beyond the classroom. In many countries, in nursing education, they are still an innovative way of learning. The study was developed as part of the international project Developing Multimedia Learning for Cross-Cultural Collaboration and Competence in Nursing - TransCoCon, (ERASMUS + Program, contract: 2017-1-UK01-KA203-36612) and aimed to build and validate a learning object that supports the learning of transcultural competences, necessary in nursing care. The learning object developed is subordinated to the theme of admission of a client in a hospital. For its development, the following steps were followed: choice of content; analyze; conceptual map; navigational architecture; storyboard; Implementation; documentation of use; use, evaluation and maintenance. As a result of the work developed, we obtained the learning object “Admission to hospital” and its Portuguese version “Acolhimento do Cliente num Hospital”. Both versions include a set of written supportive material for cross-cultural nursing care in hospital and illustrative videos of cross-cultural communication skills. The adopted methodology proved to be effective for the construction of an attractive, interactive and meaningful learning object for nursing students, nurses and nursing teachers.
- Desenvolvimento do curso de gerenciamento em enfermagem on-line: experiência exitosa entre Brasil e PortugalPublication . Prata, Ana Paula; Reis Santos, Margarida; Tronchin, Daisy Maria Rizatto; Peres, Heloisa Helena Ciqueto; Lima, Antônio Fernandes Costa; Alavarce, Débora Cristina; Aroldi, Juscilynne Barros da CostaObjective: To describe the experience of planning and developing online refresher courses in nursing management for nurses in the contexts of Brazil and Portugal. Method: The instructional design was based on meaningful learning theory, andragogy, and dialectical methodology, so it valued interaction between the actors, emphasizing the scenarios of practice and applying the concepts covered. The course structure is divided into nine theoretical units, four case studies, and an essay exam. Results: The course was positively evaluated by the participants, who reported opportunities for acquisition of new knowledge, interaction and exchange of experiences, motivation to study the topics, and self-learning. Conclusion: It is expected that description of this experience will stimulate proposals for new courses and programs in distance education modalities, improving the processes of teaching and learning so as to give support to future analyses

- Effectiveness of perioperative family-centered educational interventions in the anxiety, pain and behaviors of children/adolescents and their parents: Systematic Review ProtocolPublication . Martins Esteves, Ines; Coelho, Márcia Silva; Cardoso, Daniela; Prata, Ana Paula; Pestana-Santos, Marcia; Reis Santos, MargaridaIntroduction: Every year, millions of children and adolescents undergo surgery, 50%-75% of them experience fear and anxiety. Children are particularly susceptible to stress and anxiety surrounding surgery as a result of their cognitive development, previous experiences, and knowledge about healthcare;this leads to additional interventions to prevent and reduce these symptoms. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of family-centered educational interventions in the children’s and adolescents’ anxiety, pain, and behaviors and their parents’ anxiety during the perioperative period. Methods: This review will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines for systematic reviews of effectiveness and will consider those studies (experimental and quasi-experimental) in which perioperative educational interventions have been applied to children and adolescents and their parents; these studies measuredchildren and adolescents’ pain, anxiety, and behaviors, as well astheirparent’s anxiety. An initial search of MEDLINE and CINAHLwill be followed by a second search for published and unpublished studies from January 2007 on, available in English, Spanish and Portuguese. After all full texts are retrieved, the methodological quality assessment and data extraction will be independently and critically evaluated by two reviewers, and the data will then be presented in a tabular format. An explanatorysynthesis will accompany the results. Wheneverpossible, a meta-analysis will be performed, and a Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation Summary of Findings will be presented. Expected Results: This review will provideguidance on how family-centred educational interventions can be used as a resource to manage anxiety, pain, and behavior in children, adolescents and their relatives during the perioperative processes.
