- Dental implant failure rate and marginal bone loss in transplanted patients: a systematic review and meta-analysisPublication . Paraizo, Marcela; Botelho, João; Machado, Vanessa; Mendes, José João; Alves, Ricardo; Mascarenhas, Paulo; Cardoso, José MariaThis systematic review investigates the failure rate and marginal bone loss (MBL) of dental implants placed in patients undergoing solid-organ transplant (SOT) compared to healthy controls. Three databases (PubMed, Web of Sciences, and the Cochrane Library) were searched up to June 2020 (PROSPERO CRD42019124896). Case-control and cohort studies reporting data failure rate and marginal bone loss (MBL) of dental implants placed in SOT patients were included. The risk of bias of observational studies was assessed through the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Four case-control studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria; all had low risk of bias. Meta-analyses revealed consistently lower implant failure rate than control populations at patient and implant levels. SOT patients had a significant difference of −18% (p-value < 0.001) MBL compared to healthy patients. SOT status poses no serious threat to implant survival. Overall, this group of patients presented lower levels of dental implant failure rate and marginal bone loss compared to otherwise healthy patients. Further intervention trials with larger sample size and longer follow-ups are necessary to confirm these summarized results.
- Effect of A-PRF application on palatal wound healing after free gingival graft harvesting: a prospective randomized studyPublication . Sousa, Filipa; Machado, Vanessa; Botelho, João; Proença, Luís; Mendes, José João; Alves, RicardoObjective: The aim of this study was to investigate the healing effect of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) clot membranes in palatal wounds, resulting from free gingival graft (FGG) harvesting, on the reepithelization rate and on the pain experience after surgery. Materials and Methods: Twenty-five patients requiring FGG have participated in this prospective cohort study. After FGG harvesting, the test group (n = 14) received A-PRF clot membranes at the palatal wound and the control group (n = 11) received a gelatin sponge. Epithelialization rate of the palatal wound, wound healing area, correspondent percentage of reduction, and postsurgical pain experience were assessed at 2, 7, 14, 30, and 90 days. Results: A-PRF group had higher palatal wound reduction than the control group, at 7, 14, and 30 days of follow-up. The highest difference between the groups was attained at 30 days (91.5% for A-PRF vs. 59.0% control group). At 14 days, a significant difference in the proportion of patients showing total epithelization was found: 64.3% for A-PRF versus 9.1% for the control group. At 90 days, both groups showed total recovery. The control group experienced higher pain level and discomfort until the 14th day, being notably higher on the second day. Conclusion: The results suggest that A-PRF membranes haste the healing process, and promote greater reduction along the recovery period and less painful postoperative period.
Abstract: Due to the tragic episodes of 2017, it is required that the adopted policy based on firefighting, changes its paradigm and act in the pre-ignition phase, essentially in prevention. The objective of the research is to evaluate how the use of technological means of forest monitoring can contribute to the reduction of occurrences and detection of forest fires in Portugal. In this way, the objectives of describing the contribution of the means of surveillance in the detection of ignitions, analyzing the Video Surveillance Systems used in Portugal and analyzing the feasibility of the adoption of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems for forest surveillance were established. Thus, we proceeded to a rigorous methodology based on the bibliographical and documentary analysis and also to the accomplishment of several interviews to experts and academics of the political and strategic level that allowed to deepen and to consolidate the analysis to the problem. The study allowed to conclude that the Video Surveillance Systems have a low degree of reliability and detect few ignitions when compared with other sources. It is recommended that unmanned aerial systems be deployed for a specific period and at a time when more ignitions are likely to occur and there should be a harmonized integration of means of surveillance encompassing conventional and technological means following a specific arrangement.
