A gestão emocional
e emocionalmente ajustada.
Looking after a child with a chronic condition and their family is a constant and challenging reality in the context of paediatric nursing, which has a significant impact and increases the risk of emotional distress due to the consequent loss of the idealised child and the need for family restructuring. Emotional management emerges as a key intervention in paediatric nursing, aimed at minimising the suffering and promoting the emotional development of the child and the family. With this problem in mind, this report aims to highlight the competences of the Master in child and Paediatrics' Health Nursing assimilated in the development of nursing interventions relating to the emotional care of children with chronic conditions and effective communication with their families, considering the child as a holistic being. The methodological approach adopted for this report was governed by: experiential learning; reflective practice, accompanied by clinical reasoning; critical thinking; clinical judgement and a spring of knowledge of praxis, supported by scientific evidence. Inspired by Jean Watson's Transpersonal Care Theory, which values empathy, love and kindness as fundamental principles of care, I sought to offer a sensitive and emotionally adjusted intervention. Continuous reflection on care practices, as well as the development of my own emotional regulation, has enabled me to meet the emotional needs of children and families more effectively. Emotional management is an essential component in caring for children with chronic conditions, and it is the basis for quality, humanised care, with the power to alleviate suffering and promote the emotional well-being of the child and family.
