Abstract(s)
Social.
The promotion of active ageing can be carried out by different professions, among which Social Work stands out as being responsible for work aimed at affirming people as active subjects in making decisions and planning their lives. The dimensions of social participation and lifelong learning, which the concept of active ageing presupposes, can be encouraged and developed by involving older people in artistic activities, such as music. The arts are considered for this purpose, taking into account the social effects they provide, namely the enrichment of social ties, access to leisure opportunities, and the stimulation of essential skills to increase self-esteem. In view of the link between these themes, this dissertation is the result of an investigation that sought to understand, in general terms, the influence of artistic practices in promoting active ageing. To this end, a case study was carried out in which the unit of analysis was a group of eight elderly people taking part in one of the artistic activities listed in a community project developed by the Santa Maria da Feira City Council. The artistic activity in question is music, and the data collection techniques used to achieve the aims of the research were document analysis, observation of music rehearsals and semi-structured interviews with the participants. The aim was to understand the meanings and effects linked to the experience of artistic practice, reflecting possible connections with active ageing and Social Work.
