Abstract(s)
Partindo
da criação autoral da obra O Homem Bicho e as Criaturas
Esquisitas, o projeto alia a prática artística à investigação teórica,
Estes dados permitiram fundamentar
mental validou a pertinência ética e estética do projeto,
This dissertation explores how comics can be used as an expressive medium to convey subjective experiences related to psychosis, with a particular focus on social isolation and its emotional implications. Based on the authorial creation of the graphic novel O Homem Bicho e as Criaturas Esquisitas, the project combines artistic practice with theoretical research, aiming to foster empathy and understanding around mental health. A qualitative methodology was adopted, including a literature review in the fields of psychology, design, and visual communication, the analysis of case studies involving graphic works that address psychological suffering, and semi-structured interviews with a clinical psychologist and a comic book artist. These data supported key narrative and visual choices in the work, such as the symbolic use of colour, the fragmentation of the “self” into internal characters, and the construction of visual metaphors for altered mental states. The critical analysis carried out by a mental health professional validated the ethical and aesthetic relevance of the project, highlighting its contribution to the humanisation of psychosis and to the development of an accessible and emotionally resonant visual language. The work confirms the potential of comics as a tool for communication, education, and awareness in the field of mental health.
