  • Impact of clinical supervision on job satisfaction and emotional competence of nurses
Publication . Rocha, Inês Alves da Rocha e Silva; Barroso, Cristina; Carvalho, António Luís
Objective: To evaluate the impact of implementing the SafeCare clinical supervision model on nurses’ job satisfaction and emotional competence profile. Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study, with a sample of 28 nurses from a hospital in northern Portugal. A self-administered questionnaire was applied, used as pre and post-test, which included: sociodemographic and professional characterization; “Job Satisfaction Scale”; and “Veiga Emotional Competence Scale”. We conducted descriptive statistical analysis and the Wilcoxon Test. Results: A significant decrease in the nurses’ satisfaction with hierarchical superior was observed in the post-test. No significant differences were found in the nurses’ job satisfaction and emotional competence after the implementation of the SafeCare Model. Conclusion: The SafeCare Model needs improvement, suggesting increasing the amount of training time administered to nurses and strengthening the healthcare institution’s link to the Model.
  • Impacto da supervisão clínica em enfermagem na avaliação e intervenção no autocuidado
Publication . Rocha, Inês; Carvalho, António Luís; Barroso, Cristina; Rodrigues, Agostinho; Rocha, Vânia
Objective: to assess the agreement between researcher, nurses and medical records in relation to self-care dependency levels before and after the implementation of the SafeCare Model and to evaluate the nursing interventions related to self-care provided before and after the implementation of the SafeCare Model. Method: quasi-experimental study. For data collection, in 2017 and 2019, a self-care assessment instrument was used before and after the implementation of the model of clinical supervision in nursing (SafeCare). Results: 216 patients participated in the study. Agreement between researcher and nurses increased from pre-test to post-test in hygiene (k=0.79), self-feeding (k=0.73) and self-transferring (k=0.79). In nursing interventions, there was agreement between all evaluators in the post-test, unlike the pre-test, when there was no agreement between researcher and nurses/medical records in the intervention “promoting self-care: hygiene. Conclusion: the agreement between forms filled out individually by the groups increased significantly in most of the self-care measures assessed and, in the interventions, provided after the implementation of the SafeCare Model.
  • Olhares sobre o ensino de enfermagem em Portugal
Publication . Ribeiro, Olga; Martins, MM; Carvalho, António Luís; Santos, Luísa Maria Marques Marinho; Viana, Maria de Fátima Rocha
Objective: to understand nurses’ perception of hospital care about nursing education. Methods: a qualitative study was carried out in 19 hospital institutions, with 56 nurses. For the data collection, the semi-structured interview was used and, in the analysis, the Atlas.ti® software. Results: these aspects emerged as units of analysis: positive and negative aspects of nursing teaching in a theoretical context; and positive and negative aspects of nursing teaching in a practical context. The perception of nurses about nursing education is essentially related to the existence of much diversified training processes. Conclusion: despite the evolution of nursing as a discipline and profession, nurses recognize that many of the weaknesses in nursing education are based on the differences between nursing schools, and the need for a closer approximation of theory to practice is evident, among other strategies, the follow-up of the students during the internships by the teachers of the School.
  • Self-care assessment as an indicator for clinical supervision in nursing
Publication . Teixeira, Sílvia Marlene Monteiro; Carvalho, António Luís; Cruz, Sandra
Objective : to evaluate the needs of clinical supervision for nurses to assess the degree of dependence on self- care and planning of nursing interventions. Methods : analytical study, cross-cutting nature, collecting data from a sample of 110 patients. Results : it was shown the differences in the identification of the degree of dependence between registers and experts, as well as the selection of operations for each self-care and failures to the original assessment of the filling level (no evaluation self-care/no identification of the degree of dependence). Conclusion : there were gaps in the nursing process; they have proposed strategies such as clinical supervision sessions, training, case studies, protocols and guidance documents, to be included in a clinical supervision in nursing model.
  • Supervision in Clinical Practice Indicator: Evidence Based Practice in the Context of Outpatient Surgery
Publication . Teixeira, Leonor Olímpia; Teixeira, Ana; Barroso, Cristina; Carvalho, António Luís
Clinical supervision and evidence-based practice in nursing should be understood as complementary and indissociable as they go hand in hand towards the same objectives. Therefore, the supervising process should boost the evidence-based practice in order to promote better nursing care. The purpose of this study was to evaluate nurse’s predisposition to incorporate evidence-based practice into their care and to identify barriers to its application with the purpose of proposing contributions for the implementation of a nursing clinical supervision model that encourages the use of the best evidence available into the daily practice. The study is integrated into the research project “SAFECARE – Supervisão Clínica para a segurança e qualidade dos cuidados”. It was developed as an exploratory-descriptive study in an ambulatory surgery unit of a University Hospital in Porto, Portugal. It had a target population of 59 nurses, and it was used the “Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire” as a method of collecting data. From the 49 questionnaires collected, we find that the subscale “Practices” has an average score of 4.89, the subscale “Attitudes” 5.36 and the subscale “knowledge/skills and competences” 5.08. These results showed that nurses have a low use of evidence-based practice when compared with the level of knowledge, skills and competences shown, although they seem to have a positive attitude towards this subject. These results can be partially explained by the overburden felt by the n urses, which identified the lack of time and motivation, but also inappropriate training and scarcity of team meetings and proper tools in the workplace as barriers
  • Development of nurses' evidence-based practice skills: contributions of clinical supervision
Publication . Teixeira, Ana Isabel Carvalho; Teixeira, Leonor Olímpia; Pereira, Rui Pedro Gomes; Barroso, Cristina; Carvalho, António Luís; Püschel, Vilanice Alves de Araújo
Objective: to evaluate the impact of the implementation of the SafeCare Model on the evidence-based practice competencies of nurses. Methods: mixed method characterized by concomitant triangulation. Quantitative data were collected before and after the implementation of the Model, by means of the Clinical Effectiveness and Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire, with descriptive statistical analysis. Evidence values were obtained using the Wilcoxon test. Thirteen nurses participated. Qualitative data were obtained from interviews with 11 nurses from a public hospital and analyzed using the Content Analysis technique. Results: there were no statistically significant differences with the implementation of the model. However, nurses identified increased competencies in evidence-based practice with the recognition of advantages in their professional development, organization, and patient care. Conclusion: the implementation of the model has been shown to have contributed to the development of competencies in evidence-based practice.
  • Implementação de um modelo de supervisão clínica em enfermagem – modelo SAFECARE
Publication . Barroso, Cristina; Carvalho, António Luís; Augusto, Cristina; Teixeira, Leonor Olímpia; Teixeira, Ana; Rocha, Inês
The actual context, marked by the high cost of health care associated with technological advances, the increase in the workload of health professionals and the aging of the population with multiple chronic diseases. There are concerns raised by health organizations regarding the quality of care, with emphasis on actions aimed to the continuous quality improvement. The effects of clinical supervision on quality of care defined as a target area by the World Health Organization are a key aspect in improving quality. The literature shows that there is no model of nursing clinical supervision capable to respond to the actual context needs. The objective of this exploratory, descriptive and longitudinal study was to implement a contextualized nursing clinical supervision model, SafeCare model, in order to identify the contributions of its implementation in the indicators sensitive to nursing clinical supervision. The study was conducted in the surgery department of a health care institution and the nurses of the surgery department composed the sample. With this article we intend to disseminate the results of the implementation of the SafeCare model and to prove that the implementation of a contextualized Nursing clinical supervision model based on nurses’ needs, SafeCare Model, has contributed to obtaining higher quality and safer care for clients.
  • Satisfação profissional e competência emocional dos enfermeiros em serviços de internamento hospitalar
Publication . Rocha, Inês; Barroso, Cristina; Carvalho, António Luís
Introduction: Nurses’ job satisfaction and emotional competence are important for the safety and quality of the care provided so it is essential to measure them. Objectives: To characterize nurses’ job satisfaction and emotional competence and to evaluate the association between both variables and the nurses’ sociodemographic and professional characteristics. Methods: Descriptive-correlational, exploratory, cross-sectional quantitative study. Application of a questionnaire to 44 nurses in a hospital in the north of Portugal which includes sociodemographic and professional characterization, “Escala da Satisfação Profissional” (Job Satisfaction Scale); e “Escala Veiga de Competência Emocional” (Emotional Competence Veiga Scale). The questionnaire was validated for this study. Results: The results show that nurses are moderately satisfied professionally and perceive themselves with moderate emotional competence. Nurses’ age is positively correlated with self-motivation. Conclusion: It is essential that health organizations systematically assess nurses’ job satisfaction and emotional competence in order to implement interventions that enhance these two variables, such as nursing clinical supervision programs.
