  • Waist circunference references for children and adolescents from 6 to 18 year-old from the autonomous region of Madeira, Portugal
Publication . Sousa, Bruno; Mendes de Oliveira, Bruno; Nunes, José Luís; Vaz de Almeida, Maria Daniel
Waist circumference (WC) has been associated with cardiometabolic diseases. We aim to develop WC references for age and gender in youngsters in Autonomous Region of Madeira, Portugal (RAM). A cross-sectional study was developed in two phases. Between May 2004 and May 2005 (in 1st cycle schools) and between October 2007 and June 2009 (in 2nd and 3rd cycle, and secondary and professional schools). A representative sample of 6987 individuals was gathered, with 3532 girls and 3455 boys aged from 6 to 18 years old. WC was measured with a non-elastic tape at the midpoint between the iliac crest and the last rib. To elaborate smoothed percentiles and z-scores curves for age and gender, values were estimated between 72 and 225 months (every three months) using the LMS statistical procedure, with the exponent of the Box-Cox (L), the median (M), and coefficient of variation generalized (S) through LMSChartMaker software, version 2.76. Mean and standard deviation and charts of smoothed percentiles curves (P3, P5, P10, P25, P50, P75, P85, P90, P95 and P97) and z-scores (-2, -1, 0, 1 and 2) are presented by age and gender. These references constitute a new tool to assess cardiometabolic risk of RAM's children and adolescents.
  • Evaluation of the nutritional status in pre-school and school children, Madeira Island, Portugal
Publication . Ferreira, Mafalda; Faria, Verónica; Sousa, Bruno; Tavares, Nelson
Abstract : In order to evaluate the nutritional status of Câmara dos Lobos Municipality students, all pre-primary and primary public schools located in the municipality were contacted. The assessment of height and body weight, used to calculate body mass index as a method of diagnosing low weight, overweight, or obesity, was performed in 1405 students aged 3 to 9 years. The cut-off points of the BMI adopted by the IOTF were used to calculate the prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity. The prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity was 2.5%, 36.9% and 13.1%, respectively. In children between the ages of 3 and 5 the prevalence of overweight (including obesity) is 6.9-12.8% in boys and 6.9- 9.8% in girls. Six-year-olds had a higher prevalence of overweight when compared to other children. Students from the schools of the Estreito community in Câmara de Lobos presented the highest prevalence of low weight (3.5%). Students from the community of Curral das Freiras presented a higher prevalence of overweight (42.0%), and the prevalence of obesity was 21.0%. In order to prevent childhood obesity the municipality of Câmara de Lobos might consider these results for appropriate action.
  • Factors influencing healthy food choices of university students
Publication . Sousa, Bruno; Alves Pacheco, Catarina; Pereira, Carolina; Batalha, Mariana; Santos, Tânia; Vitorino de Carvalho, Rita
Introduction : Healthy foods, like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts, among others, should be available to anyone, especially young people, for example at the school level (1).In the National Program for the Promotion of Healthy Eating, one of the action plans for 2018-2019 was the “Modification of food supply in certain public spaces (including higher education institutions)” and for 2019- 2020: “Contribute technically to the implementation of a simplifying nutrition labeling system”(4). Thus, schools and universities should be able to encourage young people to choose higher quality food products by promoting certain menu changes (2).Today it is known that young consumers are well informed about the products they eat (3) and also have become more aware of the foods they chose both at home and away from home (4). Increasingly interested in adhering to a healthy diet, young people are progressively opting for more complete food products, both in terms of their nutritional value, as well as their origin, the form of production, including locally grown and organically grown produce, the composition, and the healthiness of the food product (5,6). Conscientious consumers value personal health and are sensitive to the effects of food products (5). Young people also place progressively greater attention on the quality of a product. In addition to the quality parameter of a food product, other factors influence young people's choices, namely economic (7), social, and personal taste (3) factors. However, due to the adaptation of a new environment, study stress, lack of proper time management and busy class schedules, these university students can suffer a lack of concern about their own health and consequently also present unhealthy food choices (8,9). The presence of healthy restaurants in the university campus could be a possible way to prevent these unhealthy patterns. Taking this into consideration, the main aim of the presente study was to describe the factors that may influence the choice for a healthy restaurant in the university campus, as well as the trends in healthy food consumption among university students from the Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias (ULHT) in Lisbon, Portugal.
  • Burnout among Portuguese healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic
Publication . Duarte, Ivone; Teixeira, Andreia; Castro, Luísa; Marina, Sílvia; Ribeiro, Carla; Jácome, Cristina; Martins, Vera; Ribeiro-Vaz, Inês; Pinheiro, Hugo Celso; Silva, Andreia Rodrigues; Ricou, Miguel; Sousa, Bruno; Alves, Cristiana; Oliveira, Andreia; Silva, Paula; Nunes, Rui; Serrão, Carla
During COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers (HCWs) have had high workload and have been exposed to multiple psychosocial stressors. The aim of this study was to evaluate HCWs in terms of the relative contributions of socio-demographic and mental health variables on three burnout dimensions: personal, workrelated, and client-related burnout. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed using an online questionnaire spread via social networks. A snowball technique supported by health care institutions and professional organizations was applied. Results: A total of 2008 subjects completed the survey. Gender, parental status, marriage status, and salary reduction were found to be significant factors for personal burnout. Health problems and direct contact with infected people were significantly associated with more susceptibility to high personal and work-related burnout. Frontline working positions were associated with all three dimensions. Higher levels of stress and depression in HCWs were significantly associated with increased levels of all burnout dimensions. Higher levels of satisfaction with life and resilience were significantly associated with lower levels of all burnout dimensions. Conclusions: All three burnout dimensions were associated with a specific set of covariates. Consideration of these three dimensions is important when designing future burnout prevention programs for HCWs.
  • The Anthropometry in nutritional and growth assessment of children and adolescents
    Publication . Sousa, Bruno
For nutritional and growth assessment, anthropometry plays an important role. Specific care for children and adolescents, described within this work, is needed in order to allow a correct evaluation of the situation. Due to the stage of growth and development of the child and adolescent population, an adequate choice of anthropometric variables, accuracy in measurement, and comparison with appropriate references that reflect the population or individuals to be evaluated are required. Anthropometry thus plays an important role in the daily clinical practice of the various professionals who evaluate the growth and nutritional status of children and adolescents, but it needs to be correctly used and interpreted.
  • Body shape concerns in Portuguese university students
Publication . Ferreira-Pêgo, Cíntia; Rodrigues, Joana; Sousa, Bruno
Abstract Many current models of beauty in developed countries represent extreme thinness in women and a muscular body in men. The body image perception will condition the search for ideal beauty through different behaviors and can be transformed into eating disorders. The university students, with the changes typical of youth and university transition, are a vulnerable group. The purpose of this analysis was to evaluate the concerns about body shape in university students from the Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias. The study included 163 students, of whom 100 were women, with a mean age of 21.71 (SD=3.80) years. 81% of men presented no body shape concerns, 17.50% showed mild, 1.60% moderate and 0% intense reoccupation. In comparison, 59% of women presented no level of body shape concerns, 27% showed a mild, 10% moderate, and 4% intense body shape preoccupation. The odds ratio of presenting concerns about body shape were significantly related to being of female gender. There were more cases of preoccupation about body shape in women, regardless of age, academic course, or adherence to the Mediterranean diet.
  • Adherence to the Mediterranean diet in Portuguese university students
Publication . Ferreira-Pêgo, Cíntia; Rodrigues, Joana; Costa, Adriana; Sousa, Bruno
Abstract Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) is one of the most recognized healthy dietary patterns. Despite the beneficial effects of healthy eating habits on academic performance, university students make unhealthy food choices. Cross sectional information regarding MedDiet adherence was collected in 305 students from the Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, from different academic courses, related or not with health sciences. To assess the MedDiet adherence, the participants completed a validated 14-point questionnaire. Approximately 29% of the total population presented poor (< 5 points) MedDiet adherence, meanwhile 59% presented an average (between 6 and 9 points) adherence and only 12.50% presented a high (> 10 points) MedDiet adherence. Nutrition students presented the highest MedDiet adherence of all the students analyzed. Pharmaceutical students, although being health professionals, showed poor adherence to the MedDiet, similar to students from courses not related to health sciences
  • Development of cereal bars with adequate nutritional profile for each trimester of pregnancy– An exploratory study
Publication . Montenegro, Sara Sofia; Raposo, António; Sousa, Bruno; Tavares, Nelson
Nutrition plays a crucial role in pregnancy as it may help to prevent pregnancy complications and fetal pathologies. It is beneficial for pregnant women to have a fractionated alimentation, as it minimizes symptoms of hyperemesis gravidarum and reduces the increased risk of hypoglycemia. The objective of this study was the preparation of three cereal bars, each one suitable for a trimester of pregnancy for pregnant women without known nutritional deficiency or pathology. Three cereal bars with a common base were obtained, to which were added nutritionally adequate ingredients for the nutritional needs of each respective trimester. The bars respected the increase of the caloric intake during the pregnancy, but, in terms of micronutrients, it was verified that no micronutrient has reached the total Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) through the consumption of two cereal bars. Still, these bars may become important tools for adherence and maintenance of healthy alimentation by the pregnant woman
