- O Colégio Nun'Álvares em Tomar - projectos e obras (epub)Publication . Serrano, Inês; Moreira, Anabela MendesA publicação "O Colégio Nun’Alvares, em Tomar: projetos e obras" reúne a análise do conjunto de projetos de arquitetura e engenharia referentes ao complexo educativo do Colégio Nun’Alvares, em Tomar, que se produziram entre 1952 e 1968, para a zona escolar da cidade, prevista no Plano Geral de Urbanização de 1938-1946. A criação do colégio, que se tornaria uma reputada instituição de ensino particular durante mais de cinco décadas, assumiu elevada importância para a cidade. Os seus edifícios, construídos nas décadas de 1950 e 1960, marcaram indelevelmente o perfil e a dinâmica urbana de Tomar. Neste sentido, esta publicação pretende contribuir para o desenvolvimento de estudos no domínio da História da Arquitetura e da Construção, sob a égide do modernismo, em Tomar, concorrendo para a fixação da sua memória enquanto património arquitetónico. Não se tratando de uma compilação exaustiva de projetos e obras, apresenta-se como uma análise sistematizada dos objetos/edifícios no contexto da arquitetura escolar nacional e local, tomando como base documental os processos de obras referentes ao complexo escolar do Colégio Nun’Alvares, reservados no Arquivo Municipal de Tomar. No capítulo introdutório, inclui-se uma breve apresentação do contexto das políticas educativas nacionais da época, e reflete-se sobre a presença do ideário modernista na arquitetura escolar. No segundo capítulo, apresentam-se e analisam-se os diversos projetos de arquitetura e engenharia do Colégio Nun’Alvares, no contexto da conjuntura então vigente, nomeadamente nos domínios da Arquitetura e da Construção. As notas biográficas sucintas dos principais projetistas dos edifícios do colégio são apresentadas no capítulo 3. O trabalho desenvolvido resultou da parceria firmada através de um protocolo entre o Instituto Politécnico de Tomar (IPT) e a Câmara Municipal de Tomar. Para além das entidades institucionais formalmente envolvidas, o trabalho realizado contou também com o empenho e esforço individual de vários intervenientes. Desta forma, na qualidade de coordenadoras do projeto, os nossos agradecimentos dirigem-se a todos os que participaram nas diversas fases deste projeto. - Promoting Education for Sustainable Development: A Collaborative Project Between a Higher Education Institution and the Surrounding School CommunityPublication . Mateus, D. M. O.This chapter describes good practices developed by a higher education institution from Portugal in the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In addition to discussing the role of higher education in society, it also focuses on an intervention project on the local school community aimed at raising awareness and disseminating good attitudes related to Sustainable Development (SD). The intervention project results from a partnership between a higher education institution, a teachers training centre and schools. In this context, several hands-on experiments were developed by higher education teachers, researchers and students, and implemented in a teachers’ professional development programme. Based on questionnaires (N = 63) and participant observation, an empirical study was conducted. Besides increasing their knowledge about SDG, teachers recognized the role of schools in raising awareness to promote SD practices, and valued the role of higher education in supporting them in these initiatives. It is concluded on the importance of developing collaborative partnerships with schools and other stakeholders to raise awareness, disseminate and increase SD practices in the community. The experience developed in the field may interest researchers, policymakers, and anyone interested in promoting Sustainable Development initiatives.
- Cultural Mapping as a regeneration tool for sparsely-populated regionsPublication . Carvalho, Cláudia Pato; Sol, Hermínia; Oosterbeek, Luiz; Caron, LaurentDemographic sparsity poses major challenges to policy makers, essential service providers, as well as economic and cultural activity actors alike. Often equated with remoteness, rurality, and in certain cases, with harsh climate conditions these regions are frequently perceived as unattractive. This unattractiveness furthers their peripheral status and weakens their economic power. The fact that remoteness has a negative connotation prevents people, in general, from understanding that remoteness is not only about challenges, but also about opportunities. Those opportunities may emerge from a process of cultural mapping that can evaluate a community's uniqueness and strengths. In other words, periphery can also be about exquisite landscape and history, stories of resilience, as well as exceptional fauna and flora. Therefore, cultural mapping in sparsely populated regions can help promote local capital empowerment, and thus, contribute to a region's regeneration. As an example of this ambitious premise, two ongoing culturally related projects -- ARTERIA and MOVTOUR (with the activities Journeying the Screen I & II) -- will be used to illustrate an attempt to achieve this goal.
- Acoustic Vases in the Portuguese Synagogue of Tomar: Analogies with other coeval worship buildingsPublication . Moreira, Anabela Mendes; João Mascarenhas Mateus; Ana Paula Pires; Manuel Marques Caiado; Ivo VeigaSince ancient times, European construction history has been confronted with the existence of ceramic pots inlaid in walls often related to acoustic purposes. This paper focuses on the ceramic pots embedded in the masonry walls of the synagogue of Tomar, built in the 15th century. Although acoustic vases in Christian and Muslim worship buildings are relatively well known and documented, no similar studies published in English were found reporting similar devices in other synagogues. This paper attempts to shed light on the presence of embedded ceramic vases in the walls of this synagogue building in Tomar. The study considers the research on ceramic vases in ancient worship buildings as well as current acoustic research on the context of cavity resonators as an ancient building technique. The origins of Tomar synagogue were also investigated in order to argue this practice can be regarded as an expression of a coexistent tradition.
- Projeto VALORBIO Tratamento de Águas Residuais por Zonas Húmidas Construídas Modulares - Uma contribuição para a economia circularPublication . Pinho, Henrique J. O.; Mateus, D. M. R.O projeto VALORBIO, Valorização de resíduos através de zonas húmidas construídas modulares usadas para tratamento de águas residuais, foi cofinanciando por fundos FEDER (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-23314). O projeto foi desenvolvido durante 18 meses, entre julho de 2017 e janeiro de 2019, e visou o tratamento de águas residuais através de Zonas Húmidas Construídas (ZHCs), que consistem em sistemas biológicos baseados em plantas, também designados por fito-ETARs (Estações de Tratamento de Águas Residuais baseadas em plantas) ou Leitos de Macrófitas.
- Valorization of solid waste in subsurface flow constructed wetlands based on renewable modular structures: A contribution to a circular economyPublication . Pinho, Henrique J. O.; Mateus, D.M.R.In this chapter, a case study is used as a basis for discussion of the contribution of constructed wetlands (CWs) to circular economy and to sustainable development. Although CWs already represent a sustainable and green technology for wastewater treatment, this study aimed to enhance CW potential to fit the circular economy paradigm. The main purpose of the study was the use of renewable materials and solid waste in the design of modular CWs. A modular pilot-scale CW was built in a wood-based structure with a filling media consisting of a mixture of three solid waste materials. This approach represents an example of the potential contribution of CWs to a circular economy through a shorter circuit for water reuse and their integration into longer economic circuits, which can be closed by symbiosis with other processes and industrial activities such as the valorization of solid waste and wood for CW assembly.
