- Domestic violence and emotional regulation : a qualitative study on intergenerational transmission among parents supported by family servicesPublication . Livet, Chrislène Camille; Reis, Marta SofiaChildhood exposure to intrafamilial violence is associated with long-term emotional and relational difficulties, including challenges in emotion regulation and parenting. Numerous quantitative studies have documented these associations but less is known about how parents subjectively experience and make sense of these processes, particularly within social and medico-social service contexts. This qualitative study explores how parents supported by family services, who experienced intrafamilial violence during childhood, perceive and regulate their emotions and how they support their children’s emotional experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six participants, five women and one man, recruited from two Maisons des Solidarités et de la Vie Sociale in Eastern France. A reflexive thematic analysis identified five interconnected themes: (1) childhood intrafamilial violence through an emotional and relational climate; (2) emotional suppression, hypercontrol and emotional overflow; (3) parenting between vulnerability, repair and transmission; (4) parentification and emotional hyper-responsibility; and (5) intergenerational transmission, reflexive awareness and rupture. The findings suggest that emotional suppression, hypercontrol and hyper-responsibility often developed as adaptive responses to emotionally unsafe family environments. These strategies continued to influence participants’ relationships and parenting experiences in adulthood. At the same time, participants showed important capacities for reflection and intentional change, especially through their wish to offer their children different emotional experiences. By focusing on parent’s narratives, this study contribute to a better understanding of how childhood intrafamilial violence may shape emotional regulation, parenting and intergenerational transmission. It also highlights the clinical relevance of trauma-informed and emotion-focused interventions within family support services.
- Grooming online, sexting, non-consensual dissemination of intimate images, and social anxiety in portuguese adolescentsPublication . Dias, Bia Patrícia Fernandes; Almeida, TelmaIntroduction: The constant use of digital technologies among adolescents has increased young people’s exposure to multiple forms of online sexual victimization, such as online grooming, sexting, and non-consensual dissemination of intimate images (NCII). Despite having existing research on this subject, there still remains a lack of investigation into their relationship with social anxiety, especially across the different dimensions of this construct. Objectives: From a One Health perspective, which acknowledges the interconnected influence of individual, social, and environmental factors on health and well-being, this study aimed to analyze the prevalence of online grooming victimization, sexting, and NCII victimization among Portuguese adolescents and the associations among online grooming, NCII, sexting, and social anxiety. It also sought to compare victims and non-victims of online grooming and NCII, and girls and boys, as well as analyze the predictors of social anxiety, online grooming, and the NCII. Method: The sample comprised 269 Portuguese adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years. The participants completed the Questionnaire on Online Sexual Solicitation and Adolescent Interaction (QOSSIA), the Sexting Questionnaire (SQ), the Checklist for Victimization by Non-Consensual Dissemination of Intimate Images, and the Social Anxiety Scale for Children (SASC-R). Results: Positive correlations were found between sexting, online grooming, and NCII. Only the fear of negative evaluation was associated with solicitations for online grooming. Sexting emerged as the main predictor of both victimization by online grooming and victimization by NCII. Furthermore, younger age and higher levels of fear of negative evaluation were identified as significant predictors of online grooming victimization. Regarding the differences between biological sexes, girls reported higher levels of social anxiety, avoidance, and social discomfort. Conclusion: Overall, the results highlight that online sexual victimization must not be viewed as a standalone phenomenon, but instead as a complex experience influenced by many factors. This research highlights the importance of prevention and intervention strategies that promote online safety and adolescents' psychological well-being.
