- Burkitt's Lymphoma in a pregnant woman: case report and review of the literaturePublication . Here, we describe a case of Burkitt’s lymphoma in a 24-week pregnant woman with cervical and abdominal involvement. The common genetic event of virtually all BL is a reciprocal chromosomal translocation involving the proto-oncogene MYC and one of the Ig gene heavy or light chain loci. Supportive treatment was administered until early delivery, after which the patient was treated according to protocol LMB96. Pregnancy and tumorogenesis share some important events such as immunologic tolerance, angiogenesis, and editing the host immune response. Little is known about the relationship between these events in pregnancy and in tumorogenesis."

- Impact of infrasound exposure and streptozotocin-induced glucose intolerance on bone composition in Wistar ratsPublication . A.The elemental composition of chemical elements can vary between healthy and diseased tissues, providing essential insights into metabolic processes in physiological and diseased states. This study aimed to evaluate the calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) levels in the bones of rats with/without streptozotocin-induced diabetes and/or exposure to infrasound. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy was used to determine the concentrations of Ca and P in Wistar rat tibiae samples. The results showed a significant decrease in bone P concentration in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats compared to untreated animals. Similarly, the Ca/P ratio was higher in the streptozotocin-induced diabetic group. No significant differences were observed in bone Ca concentration between the studied groups or between animals exposed and not exposed to infrasound. Moreover, streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats had lower bone P concentration but unaltered bone Ca concentration compared to untreated rats. Infrasound exposure did not impact bone Ca or P levels. The reduced bone P concentration may be associated with an increased risk of bone fractures in diabetes.
- Incidence of oral mucositis in patients undergoing head and neck cancer treatment: systematic review and meta-AnalysisPublication . Pacheco, Raquel; Cavacas, Maria Alzira; Mascarenhas, Paulo; Oliveira, Pedro; Zagalo, CarlosThis systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the literature about the incidence of oral mucositis and its degrees (mild, moderate, and severe), in patients undergoing head and neck cancer treatment (radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgery). Addressing this issue is important since oral mucositis has a negative impact on oral health and significantly deteriorates the quality of life. Therefore, a multidisciplinary team, including dentists, should be involved in the treatment. The overall oral mucositis incidence was 89.4%. The global incidence for mild, moderate, and severe degrees were 16.8%, 34.5%, and 26.4%, respectively. The high incidence rates reported in this review point out the need for greater care in terms of the oral health of these patients.
- Knowledge maps as a complementary tool to learn and teach surgical anatomy in virtual reality : a case study in dental implantologyPublication . While Virtual Reality (VR) has shown to be a suitable interaction paradigm for surgical training, traditional anatomical VR models often rely on simple labels and arrows pointing to relevant landmarks. Yet, studies have indicated that such visual settings could benefit from knowledge maps as such representations explicitly illustrate the conceptual connections between anatomical landmarks. In this article, a VR educational tool is presented designed to explore the potential of knowledge maps as a complementary visual encoding for labeled 3D anatomy models. Focusing on surgical anatomy for implantology, it was investigated whether integrating knowledge maps within a VR environment could improve students' understanding and retention of complex anatomical relationships. The study involved 30 master's students in dentistry and 3 anatomy teachers, who used the tool and were subsequently assessed through surgical anatomy quizzes (measuring both completion times and scores) and subjective feedback (assessing user satisfaction, preferences, system usability, and task workload). The results showed that using knowledge maps in an immersive environment facilitates learning and teaching surgical anatomy applied to implantology, serving as a complementary tool to conventional VR educational methods.
- Photobiomodulation therapy on chemo- and radiotherapy induced oral conditions : an umbrella reviewPublication . Rodrigues, Inês; Machado, Vanessa; Lopes, Luísa Bandeira; Trancoso, Pedro; Azul, António Mano; Mendes, José João; Zagalo, Carlos; Botelho, JoãoObjectives: Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a laser-based therapy used to promote tissue repair, reduce inflammation and pain, and has been extensively studied in chemo- and radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis (OM). This review examines the level of evidence of systematic reviews (SRs) that have investigated PBM in such cases of OM. Materials and methods: SRs evaluating PBM for both the treatment and prevention of OM in patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy and published before November 30, 2023, on PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, Web of Science, LILACS, TRIP and Open Grey databases were eligible for inclusion. We assessed the level of methodological and meta-analytic procedures. Results: Of the 1201 SRs, 21 that met the inclusion criteria were included. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Assessing the Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR2), and the majority was of critically low quality (n = 15, 71.4%) with only 28.5% of low quality. A total of 40 meta-analytic estimates were obtained and analyzed. Approximately 87.5% of the meta-analysis were significant (n = 33), but only one meta-analyses had a strength of “highly suggestive”, while the rest were classified as “weak”. When analyzing the overlap values, the covered area was 12.14% and the corrected covered area was 7.75%, indicating a moderate overlap. Only 4 SRs had a very high overlap and one had a high overlap. Conclusion: The efficacy of PBM in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced OM is supported by low to critically low quality SRs and meta-analysis of low strength. This review highlights important areas that need to be addressed in future research on this topic.
- Preclinical dental students self-assessment of an improved operative dentistry virtual reality simulator with haptic feedbackPublication . Rodrigues, Pedro; Nicolau, Francisco; Norte, Martim; Zorzal, Ezequiel; Botelho, João; Machado, Vanessa; Proença, Luís; Alves, Ricardo; Zagalo, Carlos; Lopes, Daniel Simões; Mendes, José JoãoTo test and evaluate the second installment of DENTIFY, a virtual reality haptic simulator for Operative Dentistry (OD), on preclinical dental students, by focusing on user performance and self-assessment. Twenty voluntary unpaid preclinical dental students, with different background experience, were enrolled for this study. After the completion of an informed consent, a demographic questionnaire, and being introduced to the prototype (on the first testing session), three testing sessions followed (S1, S2, S3). Each session involved the following steps: (I) free experimentation; (II) task execution; S3 also included (III) completion of questionnaires associated with the experiment (total of 8 Self-Assessment Questions (SAQ)); and (IV) guided interview. As expected, drill time decreased steadily for all tasks when increasing prototype use, verified by RM ANOVA. Regarding performance metrics (Comparisons by Student’s t-test and ANOVA) recorded at S3, in overall, a higher performance was verified for participants with the following characteristics: female, non-gamer, no previous VR experience and with over 2 semesters of previous experience of working on phantom models. The correlation between the participants’ performance (drill time), for the four tasks, and user self-assessment evaluation, verified by Spearman’s rho analysis, allowed to conclude that a higher performance was observed in students who responded that DENTIFY improved their self perception of manual force applied. Regarding the questionnaires, Spearman’s rho analysis showed a positive correlation between the improvement DENTIFY inputs on conventional teaching sensed by students, also enhancing their interest in learning OD, their desire to have more simulator hours and the improvement sensed on manual dexterity. All participating students adhered well to the DENTIFY experimentation. DENTIFY allows for student self-assessment and contributes to improving student performance. Simulators with VR and haptic pens for teaching in OD should be designed as a consistent and gradual teaching strategy, allowing multiplicity of simulated scenarios, bimanual manipulation, and the possibility of real-time feedback to allow for the student’s immediate self-assessment. Additionally, they should create performance reports per student to ensure self-perception/criticism of their evolution over longer periods of learning time.

- Profiling oral health status, values, and related quality of life in patients with oral cancer : a pilot studyPublication . Rodrigues, Inês; Botelho, João; Machado, Vanessa; Proença, Luís; Mendes, José João; Zagalo, CarlosPatients diagnosed with oral cancer frequently exhibit an increased likelihood of experiencing common dental conditions, lower dental health literacy, and a decline in their overall quality of life. However, there is limited understanding on the impact of oral health values on these patients. This study aims to explore the oral health status and their oral health determinants and reported outcomes in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) at the Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa Francisco Gentil. This cross-sectional study included patients who were diagnosed with OSCC for the first time. These individuals were administered a questionnaire that collected sociodemographic data, as well as their scores on the oral health value scale (OHVS) and the short-form oral health impact profile. In addition, participants self-reported their experiences with periodontitis and caries using the decayed, missing, filled index. The final sample consisted of 46 OSCC patients, consisting of 34 males and 12 females. The average age of the participants was 70.0 years (±13.2), with most of them being retired (65.2%). There were no differences found between sex regarding age (p = 0.531), employment status (p = 0.114), presence of systemic conditions, smoking habits (p = 0.423), or alcohol consumption (p = 0.404). In the OHVS, there was a statistically significant difference between men and women regarding the retention of natural teeth (p = 0.021). Patients with self-perceived periodontitis exhibited worse functional limitation (p = 0.039) and physical pain (p = 0.049). Regarding dental caries experience, it was observed that a majority of patients had a higher incidence of missing posterior teeth (59.2%). This sample presented a significant decline in oral health, in addition to the diagnosed OSCC. The oral health value and quality of life were severely declined. There is a concerning lack of oral care and health that, consequently, impacts the quality of life of these patients.
