- Development of cereal bars with adequate nutritional profile for each trimester of pregnancy– An exploratory studyPublication . Montenegro, Sara Sofia; Raposo, António; Sousa, Bruno; Tavares, NelsonNutrition plays a crucial role in pregnancy as it may help to prevent pregnancy complications and fetal pathologies. It is beneficial for pregnant women to have a fractionated alimentation, as it minimizes symptoms of hyperemesis gravidarum and reduces the increased risk of hypoglycemia. The objective of this study was the preparation of three cereal bars, each one suitable for a trimester of pregnancy for pregnant women without known nutritional deficiency or pathology. Three cereal bars with a common base were obtained, to which were added nutritionally adequate ingredients for the nutritional needs of each respective trimester. The bars respected the increase of the caloric intake during the pregnancy, but, in terms of micronutrients, it was verified that no micronutrient has reached the total Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) through the consumption of two cereal bars. Still, these bars may become important tools for adherence and maintenance of healthy alimentation by the pregnant woman
- Evaluation of the nutritional status in pre-school and school children, Madeira Island, PortugalPublication . Ferreira, Mafalda; Faria, Verónica; Sousa, Bruno; Tavares, NelsonAbstract : In order to evaluate the nutritional status of Câmara dos Lobos Municipality students, all pre-primary and primary public schools located in the municipality were contacted. The assessment of height and body weight, used to calculate body mass index as a method of diagnosing low weight, overweight, or obesity, was performed in 1405 students aged 3 to 9 years. The cut-off points of the BMI adopted by the IOTF were used to calculate the prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity. The prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity was 2.5%, 36.9% and 13.1%, respectively. In children between the ages of 3 and 5 the prevalence of overweight (including obesity) is 6.9-12.8% in boys and 6.9- 9.8% in girls. Six-year-olds had a higher prevalence of overweight when compared to other children. Students from the schools of the Estreito community in Câmara de Lobos presented the highest prevalence of low weight (3.5%). Students from the community of Curral das Freiras presented a higher prevalence of overweight (42.0%), and the prevalence of obesity was 21.0%. In order to prevent childhood obesity the municipality of Câmara de Lobos might consider these results for appropriate action.
- Influence of virtual changes in buildingconfigurations of a real street canyon on thedispersion of PM10Publication . Garcia, João; Cerdeira, Rita; Tavares, Nelson; Coelho, Luis Manuel Rodrigues; Kumar, Prashant; Carvalho, M. G.Four geometrical configurations of a real street canyon in Barreirocity (Portugal) are considered to study their influence on the dis-persion of PM10. These configurations include actual architectural layout of the street (Option 1), and three virtual cases (Options1–3). Option 2 includes the modification of real geometry byincluding 4 m gaps between the buildings situated on the southern part of the street canyon. Option 3 considers 6 m gaps betweenbuildings as opposed to 4 m gaps in Option 2. Option 4 assumesthe same height for all buildings on the southern part of the street canyon, with no gaps between buildings. Computational fluid dynamics code (CFD), FLUENT, is used to simulate the detailed flow and turbulence characteristics in three-dimensional domain ofchosen street canyon, together with the PM10 dispersion for both the summer and winter seasons. The modelled PM10 concentra-tions were then compared with the measured data at seven differ-ent locations in the street canyon. Our results indicate up to 23%lower PM10concentrations at 1.5 m above the road level during the along-canyon wind direction due to the channelling of flow, compared with those observed during the cross-canyon wind direction. Detailed inspection of the results obtained from the Options 1–3 indicated that the spacing between the buildings tendto increase particle dilution during the cross-canyon winds resulting in up to 20, and 22% reduced concentrations for options 2,and 3 respectively, compared with the actual configuration (Option1). The largest improvement ( 7%) in the PM10concentrations wasgiven by Option 2, while other options showed modest changes.Possible reasons for these changes under varying meteorological conditions are explained in the context of changing building con-figurations and their implications in city planning.
