- Bia’s smile: an health education instrument on cleft lip and palatePublication . Dias, Maria do Rosário; Neves, Ana Cristina; Santos, Inês; Ferreira, Rita"The human smile is a hegemonic factor to an aesthetically harmonious facial appearance and it is an elementary agent in a child’s socialisation. Children manifesting sequels associated with clef lip and palate (CLP) are likely to be targets of discriminatory attitudes; in the eyes of society, their aesthetically mutilated faces reach conspicuous stigmatizing visibility. Preventive interventions tackling social exclusion should be implemented, first and foremost, at schools; they should involve multidisciplinary teams and be aimed at enabling behavioural skills and social aptitudes among the peers of children with CLP, so as to allow deconstruction of prejudice associated with this condition. The health education tool now introduced is a children’s book titled Bia’s Smile. Its ludic-pedagogic goal is to build awareness and sensitivity in children aged 4 to 7 years old, as well as alert and inform education agents on the issue, with the ultimate object of the book being the eradication of social exclusion and bullying experienced by children with CLP. The children’s book / learning textbook to mental health was designed so as to include a set of pictograms, inserted in the story’s narrative. It should be noted that the available literature reveals a paucity of preventive programs on this issue, both at national and international level, which amplifies the pertinence of our ludicpedagogic project."
- From dry land to water: psychosocial impact on the lakeside villages of the Alqueva damPublication . Luís, Silvía; Neves, Ana Cristina; Oliveira, José Palma"This quasi-experimental study focus on the psychosocial impact of the Alqueva dam on state-anxiety, residential satisfaction and place identity of the inhabitants of four villages: Luz (forced to relocate), Estrela (whose village became a peninsula), Amieira (whose village became a peninsula with a marina) and Monsaraz (whose village started overlooking water). Psychosocial impact was analysed as a function of village and time. As expected, Luz evidenced the most negative psychosocial impact, as inhabitants showed higher anxiety, lower residential satisfaction towards village and house and lower place identity. Results also evidence how changes in the immediate surroundings and landscape have significant psychosocial impact. Cross-sectional measures taken with a six-year interval evidenced no changes in time. Perceived public engagement, in particular perceived public communication and consultation, was related to greater adaptation in Luz, its role being discussed as a coping strategy. Results stress the need to manage the psychosocial impact of large projects."
- "Mens sana in corpore sano" : the concept of health and illness in colorectal cancer patientsPublication . Dias, Maria do Rosário; Ferreira, Ana; Neves, Ana Cristina"Colorectal cancer is the most frequent cancer in Portugal. As such, the present research project studied colostomies patients, with temporary or definitive stoma so as to examine the internalized imago of ‘healthy person’ and ‘sick person’. A descriptive and exploratory study with a qualitative methodological strategy was carried out. Our sample comprised 46 ostomy individuals of both sexes, aged between 36 and 91 years. All participants answered to a brief socio-demographic and clinic survey and to a protocol that involved producing a pictorial representation of a healthy and sick person and provide a written answer on these concepts. The results shown that patients resort to a projective identification mechanism and attest to a connection between being healthy and being young, whereas the ‘sick person’ is often represented in rigid postures. Ostomies and related prosthetics were but rarely depicted, which may point towards an unconscious and concealed denial of the body amputation experienced by the participants. Our findings can be used as indicators for post medical treatment care, and further lead to the implementation of strategies that can better prepare colorectal cancer survivors for the meaning of the changes – physic and symbolic losses – that they experience."
- My tooth is ill: (un)healthy tooth profiles among children (phase I and II)Publication . Dias, Maria do Rosário; Evangelista, José Grillo; Neves, Ana CristinaDental caries has been considered a public health problem insofar as it constitutes a source of burden, pain, and aesthetics with implications for the general well-being of the individual. It is essential to understand, analyse and characterize the mental representation of children about this concept, to contribute to the (re)conceptualization of oral health education in terms of the aetiology of caries. Two studies (Phase I and II) were carried out with the aim of characterizing the mental representation of an (Un)Healthy Tooth, associated with the concept of dental caries mentally internalized by children. This paper presents the results of an exploratory study divided into two distinct phases (Phase I: n = 880/4 - 9 years; Phase II: n = 812/6 - 12 years) that involved a total of 1692 children, recruited at the schools of the municipality of Lisbon and at Egas Moniz University Clinic. Data was collected for two moments: M1, where the child was asked to draw a healthy tooth on a sheet of paper and M2, where the child was asked to draw an unhealthy tooth on another sheet using only a pencil of graphite, totalling 3384 drawings. Subsequently, the child was asked to answer to an open-ended questionnaire, composed by three different questions, with the aim to evaluate the mental representation of the concept of: a) Dental decay, b) Healthy tooth and c) Unhealthy tooth. In the data from the content analysis of the drawings, that has been made by 4 - 12 year-old children, the symbolism category of the teeth that were drawn, tends to increase with chronological age between 4 - 6 years old, denoting a higher frequency of an unrealistic teeth category, drawn from phase I to phase II, and at the same time from 10 years old onwards there is a marked decrease in this pictorial (Un)Realism. Most children in both phase I and phase II associate a healthy tooth with a clean tooth with a smooth surface; In contrast, to the mental representation of an unhealthy tooth in both phases, in which the caries category is represented at the level of the categories: Stains, fractures and cavitation. Analysis of the pictorial contents of the drawings made by the participating children denotes significant discrepancies, inherent to the illustration profiles of healthy tooth versus unhealthy tooth. Such discrepancies bear implications at the level of oral health promotion and prevention, suggesting the need to create ludic-pedagogic instruments for oral health education in very early development stages.
