- Bia’s smile: an health education instrument on cleft lip and palatePublication . Dias, Maria do Rosário; Neves, Ana Cristina; Santos, Inês; Ferreira, Rita"The human smile is a hegemonic factor to an aesthetically harmonious facial appearance and it is an elementary agent in a child’s socialisation. Children manifesting sequels associated with clef lip and palate (CLP) are likely to be targets of discriminatory attitudes; in the eyes of society, their aesthetically mutilated faces reach conspicuous stigmatizing visibility. Preventive interventions tackling social exclusion should be implemented, first and foremost, at schools; they should involve multidisciplinary teams and be aimed at enabling behavioural skills and social aptitudes among the peers of children with CLP, so as to allow deconstruction of prejudice associated with this condition. The health education tool now introduced is a children’s book titled Bia’s Smile. Its ludic-pedagogic goal is to build awareness and sensitivity in children aged 4 to 7 years old, as well as alert and inform education agents on the issue, with the ultimate object of the book being the eradication of social exclusion and bullying experienced by children with CLP. The children’s book / learning textbook to mental health was designed so as to include a set of pictograms, inserted in the story’s narrative. It should be noted that the available literature reveals a paucity of preventive programs on this issue, both at national and international level, which amplifies the pertinence of our ludicpedagogic project."
- Coping strategies and social support in nursing students during clinical practice : a scoping reviewPublication . Loureiro, Fernanda; Peças, Dina; Neves, Ana Cristina; Antunes, Ana VanessaAim: To identify the coping strategies and social support received by nursing students during clinical practice. Design: Scoping review. Methods: Primary studies on coping strategies and social support, in full text, in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese and published in 2018 or later were included. Search was carried out in January 2023 on EBSCOhost, PubMed, SciELO, ScienceDirect, OpenAIRE, MedNar Search, WorldWideScience and the references of previously selected articles. Results: A total of 24 studies were identified. Seven studies mentioned social support as a useful strategy and several instruments were identified that allow measurement. Conclusions: Few studies establish a direct relationship between the effectiveness of coping strategies with stressful situations. Positive coping strategies are associated with effective stress management. The relationship between social support and stress reduction is scarcely addressed. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care: Stressful situations can have an impact on students' health and on the quality of care. Nursing schools and healthcare institutions must work together in programmes to improve students coping abilities. Impact: This review addressed coping strategies used by nursing students during clinical practice. A set of relevant coping strategies were identified that can be used by teachers to improve students' outcomes. Reporting Method: The review was performed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR).
- Emotional diagnosis in patient relationship managementPublication . Dias, Maria do Rosário; Neves, Ana CristinaResearch around facial expression of emotions has only made significant progress in the last two decades, remaining closely connected to the emerging empirical knowledge in the field of non-verbal communication. Understanding the phenomenon of Pain experience involves and raises questions across various healthcare specialties, and therefore, it should be approached in a necessarily multidisciplinary manner, emphasizing the Biopsychosocial nature of the pain phenomenon. It is essential to implement the true biopsychosocial model from a Patient-centered perspective, in which the Dentist should position themselves, in essence, within the context of the Dentist-Patient Relationship as a “reader of the facial expressions” of the Patient, with the relationship established with the “Silent Patient” functioning as a “therapeutic analgesia” within the context of the Dentist-Patient relationship. Nevertheless, the major challenge facing the Dentist in relation to the subjective language of Pain is a matter of time availability, both due to the demands of healthcare institution management models, which allocate little time for Therapeutic dialogue, and the intrapsychic availability of both the Patient and the Healthcare Professional.
- From dry land to water: psychosocial impact on the lakeside villages of the Alqueva damPublication . Luís, Silvía; Neves, Ana Cristina; Oliveira, José Palma"This quasi-experimental study focus on the psychosocial impact of the Alqueva dam on state-anxiety, residential satisfaction and place identity of the inhabitants of four villages: Luz (forced to relocate), Estrela (whose village became a peninsula), Amieira (whose village became a peninsula with a marina) and Monsaraz (whose village started overlooking water). Psychosocial impact was analysed as a function of village and time. As expected, Luz evidenced the most negative psychosocial impact, as inhabitants showed higher anxiety, lower residential satisfaction towards village and house and lower place identity. Results also evidence how changes in the immediate surroundings and landscape have significant psychosocial impact. Cross-sectional measures taken with a six-year interval evidenced no changes in time. Perceived public engagement, in particular perceived public communication and consultation, was related to greater adaptation in Luz, its role being discussed as a coping strategy. Results stress the need to manage the psychosocial impact of large projects."
- "Mens sana in corpore sano" : the concept of health and illness in colorectal cancer patientsPublication . Dias, Maria do Rosário; Ferreira, Ana; Neves, Ana Cristina"Colorectal cancer is the most frequent cancer in Portugal. As such, the present research project studied colostomies patients, with temporary or definitive stoma so as to examine the internalized imago of ‘healthy person’ and ‘sick person’. A descriptive and exploratory study with a qualitative methodological strategy was carried out. Our sample comprised 46 ostomy individuals of both sexes, aged between 36 and 91 years. All participants answered to a brief socio-demographic and clinic survey and to a protocol that involved producing a pictorial representation of a healthy and sick person and provide a written answer on these concepts. The results shown that patients resort to a projective identification mechanism and attest to a connection between being healthy and being young, whereas the ‘sick person’ is often represented in rigid postures. Ostomies and related prosthetics were but rarely depicted, which may point towards an unconscious and concealed denial of the body amputation experienced by the participants. Our findings can be used as indicators for post medical treatment care, and further lead to the implementation of strategies that can better prepare colorectal cancer survivors for the meaning of the changes – physic and symbolic losses – that they experience."
