- Adverse pregnancy outcomes and maternal periodontal disease : an overview on meta-analytic and methodological qualityPublication . Machado, Vanessa; Ferreira, Madalena; Lopes, Luísa; Mendes, José João; Botelho, JoãoThis umbrella review aims to appraise the methodological quality and strength of evidence on the association between maternal periodontitis and adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs). PubMed, CENTRAL, Web-of-Science, LILACS, and Clinical Trials were searched until February 2023, without date or language restrictions. Two authors independently screened studies, extracted data, performed the risk-of-bias analysis, and estimated the meta-analytic strengths and validity and the fail-safe number (FSN). A total of 43 SRs were identified, of which 34 conducted meta-analyses. Of the 28 APOs, periodontitis had a strong association with preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), PTB and LBW showed all levels of strength, and pre-eclampsia showed only suggestive and weak strength. Regarding the consistency of the significant estimates, only 8.7% were likely to change in the future. The impact of periodontal treatment on APOs was examined in 15 SRs, 11 of which conducted meta-analyses. Forty-one meta-analyses were included and showed that periodontal treatment did not have a strong association with APOs, although PTB revealed all levels of strength and LBW showed only suggestive and weak evidence. Strong and highly suggestive evidence from observational studies supports an association of periodontitis with a higher risk of PTB, LBW, GDM, and pre-eclampsia. The effect of periodontal treatment on the prevention of APOs is still uncertain and requires future studies to draw definitive and robust conclusions.
- A conservative approach to rehabilitate a molar-incisor hypomineralization casePublication . Temudo, Rodrigo; Neves, Patrícia; Ventura, Irene; Lopes, LuísaMolar incisor hypomineralization is an increasingly common condition in our population. This condition can have great impact on the esthetics, function, and well-being of the child. This paper reports a case of a young patient diagnosed with this condition affecting all the first permanent molars and lower incisors, particularly teeth 31 and 41. The molars were treated with direct resin restorations with cusp coating and the incisors aesthetic was restored with different techniques such as bleaching with sodium hypochlorite, micro-abrasion and resin restorations. This treatment plan aimed to restore the proper teeth function, treat the already existing hypersensitivity and algic complains and to improve the aesthetic of the anterior sector. The presented case shows a conservative approach to deal with the molar incisor hypomineralization condition with satisfactory results after 1-year follow-up.
- Mouthguard and orofacial traumatism in young roller hockey practicersPublication . Lopes, Luísa; Santos, M.Objective: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of mouthguard used and orofacial trauma in a roller hockey population and verify the several associated factors. Materials and Methods: An observational cross-sectional study based on clinical observation and questionnaire application to the athletes under search. The sample consisted of 117 roller hockey athletes between 13 and 19 years old, in Portugal, in several clubs which were, Sporting Clube de Portugal, Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Clube Desportivo de Pa#xE7;o de Arcos and Parede Futebol Clube. Results: The prevalence of mouthguard used was 16.2%, and 56.2% of them used Type II, and 47.4% Type III. The prevalence of orofacial trauma was 38.5%, in which 71.1% of these dental injuries involved the upper incisors, which were the most affected teeth, both the deciduous and definitive dentition. At the time of injury, only four athletes wore mouthguards, which 1 type I, 2 of type II and 1 of model III. Conclusion: Roller hockey is a sport in which the prevalence of mouthguard use is low, and that of orofacial trauma is high. Thus, the mouthguard is a device that should be more used by athletes, since it is useful in preventing these injuries.
- Tooth reattachment and palatal veneer on a multidisciplinary approach of crown fractures in upper central incisorsPublication . Machado, Vanessa; Alves, Ricardo; Lopes, Luísa; Botelho, João; Mendes, José JoãoDental trauma is more common in young patients and its sequelae may have great impact on the esthetics, functions, and phonetics. This paper reports a case of trauma in both central incisors in a young 17-year-old patient who was treated using adhesive tooth fragment reattachment on tooth 2.1 and a palatal indirect composite veneer on tooth 1.1. Regarding the available literature and fracture extension, the treatment approach proposed for this case provided good functional and esthetic outcomes. Clinical and radiographic results after 1 year were successful. This case demonstrates the importance of establishing a multidisciplinary approach for successful dental trauma management.
