- Evidence for the Higgs-boson Yukawa coupling to tau leptons with the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2885 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque, Juan Pedro; Cantrill, Robert; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pedro, Rute; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutResults of a search for H → ττ decays are presented, based on the full set of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC during 2011 and 2012. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 4.5 fb$^{−1}$ and 20.3 fb$^{−1}$ at centre-of-mass energies of $ \sqrt{s}=7 $ TeV and $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV respectively. All combinations of leptonic ( $ \tau \to \ell \nu \overline{\nu} $ with ℓ = e, μ) and hadronic (τ → hadrons ν) tau decays are considered. An excess of events over the expected background from other Standard Model processes is found with an observed (expected) significance of 4.5 (3.4) standard deviations. This excess provides evidence for the direct coupling of the recently discovered Higgs boson to fermions. The measured signal strength, normalised to the Standard Model expectation, of μ = 1. 43$_{− 0.37}^{+ 0.43}$ is consistent with the predicted Yukawa coupling strength in the Standard Model.
- Measurement of charged-particle event shape variables in $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV proton-proton interactions with the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2885 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Anjos, Nuno; Cantrill, Robert; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutThe measurement of charged-particle event shape variables is presented in inclusive inelastic pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The observables studied are the transverse thrust, thrust minor and transverse sphericity, each defined using the final-state charged particles' momentum components perpendicular to the beam direction. Events with at least six charged particles are selected by a minimum-bias trigger. In addition to the differential distributions, the evolution of each event shape variable as a function of the leading charged particle transverse momentum, charged particle multiplicity and summed transverse momentum is presented. Predictions from several Monte Carlo models show significant deviations from data.
- Measurement of differential cross sections of isolated-photon plus heavy-flavour jet production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV using the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2885 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque, Juan Pedro; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oleiro Seabra, Luis Filipe; Onofre, António; Pedro, Rute; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutThis Letter presents the measurement of differential cross sections of isolated prompt photons produced in association with a b -jet or a c -jet. These final states provide sensitivity to the heavy-flavour content of the proton and aspects related to the modelling of heavy-flavour quarks in perturbative QCD. The measurement uses proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2012 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 20.2 fb −1 . The differential cross sections are measured for each jet flavour with respect to the transverse energy of the leading photon in two photon pseudorapidity regions: |ηγ|<1.37 and 1.56<|ηγ|<2.37 . The measurement covers photon transverse energies 25
- Measurements of differential cross sections of top quark pair production in association with jets in ${pp}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV using the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2885 authors); Aguilar Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque Espinosa, Juan Pedro; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Mui\~no, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Goncalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amelia; Maneira, Jose; Oleiro Seabra, Luis Filipe; Onofre, Ant\'onio; Costa Batalha Pedro, Rute; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, Joao; Silva, Jose Manuel; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutMeasurements of differential cross sections of top quark pair production in association with jets by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC are presented. The measurements are performed as functions of the top quark transverse momentum, the transverse momentum of the top quark-antitop quark system and the out-of-plane transverse momentum using data from pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2015 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb$^{−1}$. The top quark pair events are selected in the lepton (electron or muon) + jets channel. The measured cross sections, which are compared to several predictions, allow a detailed study of top quark production.
- Search for $W' \to t\bar{b}$ in the lepton plus jets final state in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2885 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque, Juan Pedro; Cantrill, Robert; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pedro, Rute; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutA search for new charged massive gauge bosons, called $W'$, is performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV, using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$. This analysis searches for $W'$ bosons in the $W' \to t\bar{b}$ decay channel in final states with electrons or muons, using a multivariate method based on boosted decision trees. The search covers masses between 0.5 and 3.0 TeV, for right-handed or left-handed $W'$ bosons. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation is observed and limits are set on the $W' \to t\bar{b}$ cross-section times branching ratio and on the $W'$-boson effective couplings as a function of the $W'$-boson mass using the CL$_s$ procedure. For a left-handed (right-handed) $W'$ boson, masses below 1.70 (1.92) TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.
- Search for light resonances decaying to boosted quark pairs and produced in association with a photon or a jet in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2885 authors); Aguilar Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque Espinosa, Juan Pedro; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Mui\~no, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Goncalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amelia; Maneira, Jose; Oleiro Seabra, Luis Filipe; Onofre, Ant\'onio; Costa Batalha Pedro, Rute; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, Joao; Silva, Jose Manuel; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutThis Letter presents a search for new light resonances decaying to pairs of quarks and produced in association with a high- pT photon or jet. The dataset consists of proton–proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb −1 at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Resonance candidates are identified as massive large-radius jets with substructure consistent with a particle decaying into a quark pair. The mass spectrum of the candidates is examined for local excesses above background. No evidence of a new resonance is observed in the data, which are used to exclude the production of a lepto-phobic axial-vector Z′ boson.
- Search for top-squark pair production in final states with one lepton, jets, and missing transverse momentum using 36 fb$^{−1}$ of $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV pp collision data with the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2885 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque, Juan Pedro; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oleiro Seabra, Luis Filipe; Onofre, António; Pedro, Rute; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutThe results of a search for the direct pair production of top squarks, the supersymmetric partner of the top quark, in final states with one isolated electron or muon, several energetic jets, and missing transverse momentum are reported. The analysis also targets spin-0 mediator models, where the mediator decays into a pair of dark-matter particles and is produced in association with a pair of top quarks. The search uses data from proton-proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016 at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 fb$^{-1}$. A wide range of signal scenarios with different mass-splittings between the top squark, the lightest neutralino and possible intermediate supersymmetric particles are considered, including cases where the W bosons or the top quarks produced in the decay chain are off-shell. No significant excess over the Standard Model prediction is observed. The null results are used to set exclusion limits at 95% confidence level in several supersymmetry benchmark models. For pair-produced top-squarks decaying into top quarks, top-squark masses up to 940 GeV are excluded. Stringent exclusion limits are also derived for all other considered top-squark decay scenarios. For the spin-0 mediator models, upper limits are set on the visible cross-section.
