The focus is on the contributions to W+jets processes from real W emission, which is achieved by studying events where a muon is observed close to a high transverse momentum jet. At small angular separations, these contributions are expected to be large. Various theoretical models of this process are compared to the data in terms of the absolute cross-section and the angular distributions of the muon from the leptonic W decay.

Events are selected if the four anti-k$_{t}$ R = 0.4 jets with the largest transverse momentum (p$_{T}$) within the rapidity range |y| < 2.8 are well separated (ΔR$_{4j}^{min}$ > 0.65), all have p$_{T}$ > 64 GeV, and include at least one jet with p$_{T}$ > 100 GeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{−}^{1}$ . The cross sections, corrected for detector effects, are compared to leading-order and next-to-leading-order calculations as a function of the jet momenta, invariant masses, minimum and maximum opening angles and other kinematic variables.

The measured parameters include the CP -violating phase ϕ$_{s}$ , the decay width Γ$_{s}$ and the width difference between the mass eigenstates ΔΓ$_{s}$ . The values measured for the physical parameters are statistically combined with those from 4.9 fb$^{−1}$ of 7 TeV data, leading to the following: $ \begin{array}{l}{\phi}_s=-0.090\pm 0.078\left(\mathrm{stat}.\right)\pm 0.041\left(\mathrm{syst}.\right)\mathrm{rad}\\ {}\varDelta {\varGamma}_s=0.085\pm 0.011\left(\mathrm{stat}.\right)\pm 0.007\left(\mathrm{syst}.\right){\mathrm{ps}}^{-1}\\ {}{\varGamma}_s=0.675\pm 0.003\left(\mathrm{stat}.\right)\pm 0.003\left(\mathrm{syst}.\right){\mathrm{ps}}^{-1}.\end{array} $
- Measurement of the top quark mass in the $t\bar{t}\to$ dilepton channel from $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV ATLAS dataPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2857 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque, Juan Pedro; Cantrill, Robert; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oleiro Seabra, Luis Filipe; Onofre, António; Pedro, Rute; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutThe top quark mass is measured in the tt¯→dilepton channel ( lepton=e,μ ) using ATLAS data recorded in the year 2012 at the LHC. The data were taken at a proton–proton centre-of-mass energy of s=8 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 20.2 fb−1 . Exploiting the template method, and using the distribution of invariant masses of lepton– b-jet pairs, the top quark mass is measured to be mtop=172.99±0.41 (stat)±0.74 (syst) GeV , with a total uncertainty of 0.84 GeV . Finally, a combination with previous ATLAS mtop measurements from s=7 TeV data in the tt¯→dilepton and tt¯→lepton+jets channels results in mtop=172.84±0.34 (stat)±0.61 (syst) GeV , with a total uncertainty of 0.70 GeV .
- Measurement of transverse energy-energy correlations in multi-jet events in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV using the ATLAS detector and determination of the strong coupling constant $\alpha_{\mathrm{s}}(m_Z)$Publication . ATLAS collaboration (2857 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque, Juan Pedro; Cantrill, Robert; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pedro, Rute; Pina, João Antonio; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutHigh transverse momentum jets produced in pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV are used to measure the transverse energy–energy correlation function and its associated azimuthal asymmetry. The data were recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in the year 2011 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 158 pb −1 . The selection criteria demand the average transverse momentum of the two leading jets in an event to be larger than 250 GeV. The data at detector level are well described by Monte Carlo event generators. They are unfolded to the particle level and compared with theoretical calculations at next-to-leading-order accuracy. The agreement between data and theory is good and provides a precision test of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics at large momentum transfers. From this comparison, the strong coupling constant given at the Z boson mass is determined to be αs(mZ)=0.1173±0.0010 (exp.) −0.0026+0.0065 (theo.) .
- Measurements of fiducial cross-sections for $t\bar{t}$ production with one or two additional b-jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =8 TeV using the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2857 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque, Juan Pedro; Cantrill, Robert; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pedro, Rute; Pina, João Antonio; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutFiducial cross-sections for $t\bar{t} $ production with one or two additional b-jets are reported, using an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider, collected with the ATLAS detector. The cross-section times branching ratio for $t\bar{t} $ events with at least one additional b-jet is measured to be 950 $\pm $ 70 (stat.)$^{+240-190}$ (syst.) fb in the lepton-plus-jets channel and 50 $\pm $ 10 (stat.)$^{+15-10}$ (syst.) fb in the $e \mu $ channel. The cross-section times branching ratio for events with at least two additional b-jets is measured to be 19.3 $\pm $ 3.5 (stat.) $\pm $ 5.7 (syst.) fb in the dilepton channel ( $e \mu $ , $\mu \mu $ , and ee) using a method based on tight selection criteria, and 13.5 $\pm $ 3.3 (stat.) $\pm $ 3.6 (syst.) fb using a looser selection that allows the background normalisation to be extracted from data. The latter method also measures a value of 1.30 $\pm $ 0.33 (stat.) $\pm $ 0.28 (syst.)% for the ratio of $t\bar{t}$ production with two additional b-jets to $t\bar{t}$ production with any two additional jets. All measurements are in good agreement with recent theory predictions.
- Measurements of integrated and differential cross sections for isolated photon pair production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2857 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque, Juan Pedro; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oleiro Seabra, Luis Filipe; Onofre, António; Pedro, Rute; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutA measurement of the production cross section for two isolated photons in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=8 TeV is presented. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb-1 recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement considers photons with pseudorapidities satisfying |ηγ|<1.37 or 1.56<|ηγ|<2.37 and transverse energies of respectively ET,1γ>40 GeV and ET,2γ>30 GeV for the two leading photons ordered in transverse energy produced in the interaction. The background due to hadronic jets and electrons is subtracted using data-driven techniques. The fiducial cross sections are corrected for detector effects and measured differentially as a function of six kinematic observables. The measured cross section integrated within the fiducial volume is 16.8±0.8 pb. The data are compared to fixed-order QCD calculations at next-to-leading-order and next-to-next-to-leading-order accuracy as well as next-to-leading-order computations including resummation of initial-state gluon radiation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithm or matched to a parton shower, with relative uncertainties varying from 5% to 20%.
- Search for direct top squark pair production in final states with two tau leptons in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2857 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque, Juan Pedro; Cantrill, Robert; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pedro, Rute; Pina, João Antonio; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutA search for direct pair production of the supersymmetric partner of the top quark, decaying via a scalar tau to a nearly massless gravitino, has been performed using 20 fb$^{-1}$ of proton–proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=8~\mathrm{TeV}$ . The data were collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2012. Top squark candidates are searched for in events with either two hadronically decaying tau leptons, one hadronically decaying tau and one light lepton, or two light leptons. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is found. Exclusion limits at $95~\%$ confidence level are set as a function of the top squark and scalar tau masses. Depending on the scalar tau mass, ranging from the $87~\mathrm{GeV}$ LEP limit to the top squark mass, lower limits between 490 and $650~\mathrm{GeV}$ are placed on the top squark mass within the model considered.
- Search for electroweak production of supersymmetric states in scenarios with compressed mass spectra at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2857 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Araque, Juan Pedro; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oleiro Seabra, Luis Filipe; Onofre, António; Pedro, Rute; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutA search for electroweak production of supersymmetric particles in scenarios with compressed mass spectra in final states with two low-momentum leptons and missing transverse momentum is presented. This search uses proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015–2016, corresponding to 36.1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity at s=13 TeV. Events with same-flavor pairs of electrons or muons with opposite electric charge are selected. The data are found to be consistent with the Standard Model prediction. Results are interpreted using simplified models of R-parity-conserving supersymmetry in which there is a small mass difference between the masses of the produced supersymmetric particles and the lightest neutralino. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are set on next-to-lightest neutralino masses of up to 145 GeV for Higgsino production and 175 GeV for wino production, and slepton masses of up to 190 GeV for pair production of sleptons. In the compressed mass regime, the exclusion limits extend down to mass splittings of 2.5 GeV for Higgsino production, 2 GeV for wino production, and 1 GeV for slepton production. The results are also interpreted in the context of a radiatively-driven natural supersymmetry model with nonuniversal Higgs boson masses.
- Search for heavy long-lived charged $R$-hadrons with the ATLAS detector in 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ of proton--proton collision data at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeVPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2857 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque, Juan Pedro; Cantrill, Robert; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oleiro Seabra, Luis Filipe; Onofre, António; Pedro, Rute; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutA search for heavy long-lived charged R -hadrons is reported using a data sample corresponding to 3.2 fb −1 of proton–proton collisions at s=13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The search is based on observables related to large ionisation losses and slow propagation velocities, which are signatures of heavy charged particles travelling significantly slower than the speed of light. No significant deviations from the expected background are observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are provided on the production cross section of long-lived R -hadrons in the mass range from 600 GeV to 2000 GeV and gluino, bottom and top squark masses are excluded up to 1580 GeV, 805 GeV and 890 GeV, respectively.
