Abstract(s)
Meaning in relation to life is one of the interests associated with positive psychology and of those who study or seek to understand the contributors to psychological well-being. Objectives: Describe psychopathological symptoms and the meaning of life, comparing them according to gender and academic level. Correlate psychopathological symptoms and meaning in life and analyze the possible effect of psychopathological symptoms on students' meaning in life. Methods: Psychopathological symptoms and meanings were collected using a questionnaire from 105 university students aged between 18 and 28 years old. The Meaning in Life Questionnaire (Crespo & Pires, 2017) was applied to measure the presence and search for meaning in life and the Brief Symptom Inventory 18 by Canavarro et al. (2017) the intensity of psychosymptomatology manifestations. Results: The most predominant profiles were those with a low presence of meaning. There were differences depending on the gender and academic degree that the students attended. The correlations obtained were statistically significant in the presence of meaning with all psychopathological symptoms and in the search for meaning with depressive symptoms. The regression model had explanatory power, which meant that the psychopathological symptom variables explained 14.4% of the variation in the presence of meaning in life. Conclusions: This better understanding between the association of psychopathological symptoms and meaning in life could provide greater well-being and academic success among university students in future interventions. They must be given skills so that they can build a meaningful life, formulating and pursuing aspirations that can benefit them and their communities.
