Abstract(s)
Under the title of “The Influence of Work Motivation on Risk Perception”, this research is intended to analyze some aspects of the organizational dynamics for matters related with safety, as well as with human factors reflected on motivation and on risk perception in work. The conducted study focused on an organization within the Defence Industry, more precisely on the armament branch, whose business area can be rated as of high risk, taking into account that energetic components and materials with energetic components are constantly handled. Performed tasks are in most cases manual and monotonous, and no progress in career is expected. These constraints, among others, can lead to a gradual lack of motivation, and it is self-evident that there must be an increasing sensitiveness on matters related with safety and well-being of the concerned workers. It is absolutely necessary to work accurately and carefully, whereas it is essential that the concerned individual is fully aware of the hazards which he is exposed to and can remain steadily on the alert. Therefore, there is a need to analyze the workers' ways of thinking (perceptions) and acting (behaviours), in order to understand the relationship between reality and the symbolic concepts built by each individual. This analysis, together with the observation of the motivation levels, provided us with the information that the motivational stimulus is interlinked with the way of thinking and acting. The general scope of this study is to know the various forms of organizational motivation, providing the basis for analyzing the workers' motivation and checking whether this can influence their risk perception. With such an interlink, the control of motivational levels is assumed to be the basis to ensure safe behaviours, and thus to maintain a healthy and prosperous organization. For the purpose of focusing the context of the object of this survey, to begin with theoretical patterns have been dealt on the subjects in question, such as Safety Culture and Safety Climate, Motivation and Risk Perception, so that there would be a better understanding thereupon and a theoretical basis likely to substantiate data collection and processing. For data collection the qualitative research method was used, through individual semi-structured interviews, as the population under survey was quite small, made up by 11 individuals only. These interviews have been examined on the basis of their contents analysis. Within the present survey, collected information suggested a direct relationship between motivation and safe behaviour, whereas the more motivated a worker is, the safer and more suitable his/her behaviour will be.
