a estes desafios?
sentido.
During two academic years (September 2019 – July 2021), I worked in Canelas Elementary and High School as a Teach For Portugal (TFP) mentor/fellow. The current practical project under the Master’s Degree in Social Intervention in Childhood and Youth At-Risk of Social Exclusion is a result of the work carried out at this school. TFP is a non-profit that believes that the place where a child is born should not restrain the child’s opportunities across the lifespan. Its mission is to reduce and prevent educational inequities. During the period that I have worked at this school, I had the opportunity to understand its educational context by daily interacting with the school’s contextual challenges as well as encountering other (more) current challenges. Amidst these several challenges, we are going to underscore some specifical challenges, such as: enhancing students' achievement and well-being (by learning from students’ contexts); connecting parents to the school for positive reasons; promoting positive peer group interactions across different age ranges; fostering and creating multidisciplinary teams to address students’ needs. What solutions could we co-design with the community in order to address those challenges? Our project proposal intends to provide an answer to this question. “Os Padrinhos” [“The Godfathers”] is an inter-peer education and mentoring project that intends to foster 5th-grade students' well-being at school as well as school achievement. To achieve that, 10th and 11th-grade student volunteers commit to mentoring 5th graders. This project has two main focuses: (1) direct in-person mentoring provided by the older students to the 5th graders, along with the guidance and supervision from a multidisciplinary team; (2) a multidisciplinary team providing training to the older students (the mentors or “Godfathers”) so that they become able to effectively mentor the younger students as well as to further develop their own personal skills (more broadly). Last but not the least, we wish to “give” this project “back” to the school, interpreting it as a product that emerged from the school itself. Our ultimate goal is that the school can use this project to address its challenges and fulfill its needs – if the school finds it meaningful and useful.
