Abstract(s)
as responsabilidades profissionais quanto as domésticas.
responsabilidades. As principais dificuldades identificadas foram a dependência dessa
rede de apoio e a fadiga física. As estratégias utilizadas pelas mães incluem manter
negativos. Embora a maternidade traga desafios, muitas mulheres desenvolveram
qualidades como empatia em suas vidas profissionais. No entanto, enfrentam desgastes
This research work presents the results of an exploratory study whose starting question was: How do women reconcile the responsibilities of motherhood with the demands of professional life, and what are the main challenges and impacts of this reconciliation on their careers and their personal/family life?. Guided by this question, the central objective of this study was to understand how women reconcile motherhood with professional life and identify the main challenges faced by working mothers in balancing the demands of home and work. This qualitative investigation used semi-structured interviews as a data collection method, with six women who are mothers and have an active professional life in the Lisbon region. The data revealed that mothers face similar challenges regardless of family configuration or number of children. The majority reported physical fatigue due to double work shifts, which include both professional and domestic responsibilities. The results indicate that a support network, such as family members or daycare centers, is crucial for balancing responsibilities. The main difficulties identified were dependence on this support network and physical fatigue. Strategies used by mothers include maintaining good family communication, having a defined routine and hiring help with household tasks. Only one participant reported receiving organizational support, and all expressed physical fatigue, with the majority mentioning negative emotional impacts. Although motherhood brings challenges, many women have developed qualities like empathy in their professional lives. However, they face emotional and physical stress, feeling guilty for not meeting all expectations in their roles as mothers and professionals. The study concludes that organizational policies need to be more geared towards supporting working mothers. The sample size limitation suggests the need for future research with a larger number of participants and a focus on social class, in order to better understand how different socioeconomic contexts influence the reconciliation between work and motherhood. Furthermore, it is recommended to investigate the quality of life of these mothers, including aspects such as personal care and leisure, which were not addressed in this study.
