Abstract(s)
Over the years, leisure time has become increasingly important. It is in this free time that individuals, of their own free will, dedicate themselves to activities with different purposes, such as rest, fun, entertainment, personal training or voluntary social participation, after fulfilling their professional, family and social responsibilities. Public spaces play a fundamental role in this context, as they allow citizens to enjoy the city through social practices, leisure time, cultural events and urban experiences, thus contributing to improving the quality of life and livability of the urban environment. In this sense, urban public spaces, more specifically those that are outdoors, play a fundamental role in leisure, as they allow citizens to enjoy the city through social practices, leisure activities, cultural events and urban experiences, thus contributing to improving the quality of life and habitability of the urban environment. Thus, the present study aims to verify whether public spaces are considered attractive and inclusive for leisure activities when they offer accessibility for all, diverse options for use, safe environments, and infrastructure, according to the opinion of undergraduate students at the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire survey, and data analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The results showed active participation by students in different leisure activities, especially those that promote socialization. The study also demonstrates how IPC students use outdoor public spaces for leisure, highlighting socialisation and pointing to improvements in infrastructure that can guide local policies for greater accessibility, safety, and diversity of use.
