Abstract(s)
Santos, Pontes, Dourado e Rodrigues, 2006; Rodrigues, 2012).
Educate for the conscious use of the Pediatric Emergency Service The number of children using Pediatric Urgency has increased over the years. However, the majority of cases are false emergencies, which could be treated at the level of primary health care. This leads to a worsening of health care provision, dissatisfaction of users and health professionals and increased costs (Caldeira, Santos, Pontes, Dourado e Rodrigues, 2006; Rodrigues, 2012). Thus, it is important to understand the reasons that fathers and mothers turn to the pediatric emergency service (SUP) and seek solutions to alleviate the problem, where education is believed to play an important role. This work is an educational intervention program that seeks to promote health literacy that targets fathers and mothers of children between 5 and 9 years old, attending a College in Coimbra. Based on a mixed and exploratory methodology, the program also has the following specific objectives: i) know the main factors that motivate the fathers and mothers of these children to use the pediatric emergency service; ii) Implement five educational sessions with the fathers and mothers of this program, on the main warning signs in children that justify the use of the emergency service; and iii) evaluate the knowledge acquired after the implementation of the educational sessions. The following topics will be addressed during 5 educational sessions: pediatric emergencies; common childhood illnesses; warning signs to resort to urgency; mild illnesses that can be treated at home; health literacy and conscious use of pediatric urgency. During the meetings, group dynamics are carried out to enhance the results. In addition, a questionnaire will be applied before the meetings, to check the participants' prior knowledge and perceptions, and a questionnaire after the meetings, to assess the evolution of knowledge (one month after). With this, expected to achieve to understand the motivations of the participants when taking their children to the SUP and, mainly, to contribute to the conscious use of the SUP by these individuals.
