Abstract(s)
Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions we make throughout our lives. In this way, this research aims to understand the main factors that influenced first-year students to choose the Accounting and Finance course, as well as to understand the main perceptions that influence the intention of final-year students to pursue a career in Accounting and Finance, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. This study follows a quantitative approach, using three questionnaires: one questionnaire aimed at first-year students, focused on their intention to choose a course, and the other two aimed at final-year students, focused on their intention to pursue careers in Accounting and Finance, respectively. The results showed that, with regard to the choice of Accounting and Finance course, favorable attitudes towards the course had a weak positive association with students' intention to choose the course. However, not enough evidence was found to state that favorable subjective norms regarding the course and/or high perceived control regarding the course were associated with students' intention to choose the course. As for the intention to pursue a career in Accounting, behavioral beliefs showed a strong and significant positive association with the intention to pursue a career in Accounting. Normative and control beliefs, while also significant, showed moderate positive associations. Finally, regarding the intention to pursue a career in Finance, behavioral beliefs, normative beliefs and control beliefs showed a moderate and significant positive association with the intention to pursue a career in Finance.
