The perception of the elderly person's body is influenced by self-image and the way in which the social environment conceives it, and is often negative. Gerontology, looking at aging in an integrated way, can contribute to the deconstruction of the normative role of the body, in a population that is still socially considered homogeneous. This study compares and analyzes perceptions of future gerontologists and people aged 60+ on the body of the elderly. It surveyed 19 students of the 1st cycle of Social Gerontology and 19 people aged 60+ from senior universities in Portugal. The results show agreement between future gerontologists and people aged 60+ regarding the concern and appreciation of the body by the elderly, even though for them it is also synonymous with greater vulnerability and illness. The conclusions refer to the need to broaden the debate to more agents who participate in the social conception of the elderly body, beyond the biological experience, confronting their perspectives with those of people aged 60+, integrating sexuality and gender. It is also suggested the inclusion of UC on the subject in the initial, post-graduate and advanced formation of Gerontology courses.
