Nos últimos tempos, tem-se intensificado o debate em torno dos fluxos migratórios que chegam à Europa. Estas deslocações resultam, em grande parte, de crises políticas, económicas e ambientais, que levam muitas pessoas a sair dos seus países em busca de melhores condições de vida. Apesar de alguns discursos negativos, também presentes em Portugal, as políticas europeias tendem a reconhecer a migração como um contributo relevante para o desenvolvimento social e económico. Ainda assim, ao nível local, como na Região do Cávado, o aumento da população imigrante traz desafios específicos ao território.
Neste contexto, o conceito de aculturação assume importância, uma vez que envolve a interação entre culturas diferentes num processo recíproco. A integração é frequentemente apontada como a estratégia mais equilibrada, beneficiando tanto os imigrantes como a sociedade de acolhimento. No entanto, este processo enfrenta vários obstáculos, como a burocracia, a discriminação, a xenofobia e dificuldades no acesso a direitos e serviços.
O Serviço Social assume aqui um papel fundamental, não só na mediação entre imigrantes e instituições, mas também na promoção dos direitos humanos e na construção de uma sociedade mais inclusiva.
A investigação realizada seguiu uma abordagem qualitativa, com uma amostra intencional de imigrantes e assistentes sociais. A recolha de dados foi feita através de entrevistas semiestruturadas, sendo posteriormente analisados por análise de conteúdo.
Os resultados evidenciam as perceções dos imigrantes sobre a sua integração e destacam a importância do Serviço Social, bem como a perspetiva dos profissionais sobre os desafios existentes.
In recent times, the debate surrounding migration flows into Europe has intensified. These movements are largely the result of political, economic, and environmental crises, which drive many people to leave their countries in search of better living conditions. Despite some negative rhetoric, which is also present in Portugal, European policies tend to recognize migration as a significant contributor to social and economic development. Nevertheless, at the local level, such as in the Cávado Region, the increase in the immigrant population poses specific challenges for the area. In this context, the concept of acculturation takes on importance, as it involves the interaction between different cultures in a reciprocal process. Integration is often cited as the most balanced strategy, benefiting both immigrants and the host society. However, this process faces various obstacles, such as bureaucracy, discrimination, xenophobia, and difficulties in accessing rights and services. Social work plays a fundamental role here, not only in mediating between immigrants and institutions, but also in promoting human rights and building a more inclusive society. The study employed a qualitative approach, using a purposive sample of immigrants and social workers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and subsequently analyzed using content analysis. The results highlight immigrants’ perceptions of their integration and underscore the importance of social work, as well as professionals’ perspectives on existing challenges.
