Abstract(s)
O referido processo
Portugal continental.
The planning and management of tourist destinations is a complex process that aims to achieve the development of tourism. It requires the consideration of elements such as competitiveness, innovation and sustainability. This referred process involves many stages, tools and stakeholders, from which we can highlight the tourist guides. The focal point of the present study was the analysis of the performance area of certified tourist guides as stakeholders in the planning and management process of tourist destinations, in continental Portugal. Therefore, it was crucial to analyze the many roles associated with tourist guides as storytellers, interpreters, ambassadors, among others. When taking into account their role as mediators between destinations and tourists, the tourist guides are unquestionable destination stakeholders, who encounter some limitations regarding their performance as such. The empirical research includes two data collection techniques. The questionaries were administrated to certified tourist guides in continental Portugal, and the interviews were directed to stakeholder representatives in continental Portugal (who were perceived to be the most important for the study). The 218 questionaries permitted to obtain the opinion and perception of the tourist guides regarding their performance as stakeholders, in the planning and management of tourist destinations, whereas the six interviews provided an insight on how the tourist guides performance is perceived by the stakeholders. The results verify that, despite the internal and external constraints associated to a more active participation from the tourist guides in the planning and management, there is a shared interest (tourist guides and stakeholders) in promoting referred participation. The study also allowed to develop measures that aim to contribute to the valorization of these professionals and stimulate their participation as tourism agents, in particular, in the planning and management process of tourist destinations in continental Portugal.
