Numa altura em que a conjuntura internacional sofre um significativo sobressalto e na
lógica justificativa de uma possível revisão do edifício concetual da Defesa Nacional, iniciada
pelo Conceito Estratégico de Defesa Nacional, é pertinente estudar o contributo das Forças
Armadas para a prossecução dos interesses nacionais na “arena” internacional. Neste sentido,
esta investigação tem por objetivo especificar contributos para o emprego da dimensão militar
na promoção do poder de Portugal, no quadro das relações internacionais que se avizinham, a
médio e longo prazo. Para o efeito utilizou-se uma metodologia de raciocínio indutivo, assente
numa estratégia qualitativa e num desenho de pesquisa de estudo de caso, recorrendo-se à
análise documental e a entrevistas a entidades relevantes no domínio do estudo. Os resultados
obtidos confirmaram a importância das Forças Armadas na afirmação e credibilidade externa
de Portugal, assim como o estatuto de Estado coprodutor de segurança internacional, que
granjeia, concluindo-se pela necessidade de manter e desenvolver forças de natureza ágil,
com capacidades técnicas e equipamentos adequados, que permitam ao país continuar a
desempenhar um papel ativo, não só em operações militares correntes, como também em
operações de apoio humanitário e em desastres naturais
These are critical times, with significant upheaval in the international arena, surging under a prevailing rationale of a possible revision of the National Defence´s conceptual building, initiated by the Strategic Concept of National Defence. It is therefore adequate to analyse the contribution of the Armed Forces to the pursuit of our national interests in the international arena. With that aim, this paper's main objective is to clarify in which ways the military dimension contributes to the promotion of Portugal's strength in the upcoming international relationship framework , in the medium and long term. An inductive reasoning methodology was used, based on a qualitative strategy and a case study design, using documentary analysis and conducting interviews with relevant entities to this study´s scope. The results validated the Armed Forces' relevance for Portugal's external affirmation and credibility, as well as for its already achieved status of international security co-producing state, having concluded for the need to maintain and develop forces of an agile nature, with technical capabilities and appropriate equipment, that enable the country to further play an active role not only in current military operations but also in humanitarian support and natural disasters operations.
