Abstract(s)
Visual Arts play a crucial role in the development of students, as they not only promote specific skills, including aesthetic and artistic sensitivity, but also offer important experiences to the student through their very particular teaching methodologies. The theme chosen for this study, “Seeing to ‘believe’ and understand,” aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of Visual Arts when employed in the service of Environmental Studies, contributing through the creation of twenty-eight lesson plans that implicate the role and contributions of content, playful and experiential methodologies, essentially using Visual Arts as a more effective means for acquiring skills (knowledge, abilities, and attitudes) in the area of Environmental Studies. The theme was shaped during the internship carried out in the Curricular Unit of Supervised Pedagogical Practice, in the Master´s Degree for Qualification in Teaching in Pre-School Education and the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, upon observing that both Environmental Studies and Visual Arts were addressed infrequently. As research objectives and pragmatic results, this final master’s work: a) provides lesson plans that are in accordance with two current 2nd-grade Environmental Studies textbooks, as well as with the guiding documents of Essential Learning for the areas of Environmental Studies and Visual Arts; b) satisfies the need, when integrating into a school, to be able to implement these lesson plans immediately; c) offers teachers the possibility to implement, monitor, and assess effectiveness in light of programmatic guidelines; d) demonstrates a didactic approach that addresses Environmental Studies through Education in the Arts, specifically in this case, Visual Arts. Thus, the main objective of this work is to expose the importance of visual arts in learning, specifically in the context of environmental studies.
