A agricultura de Timor-Leste é essencialmente uma agricultura de subsistência.
Desde o ano da sua independência, em 2002, a FAO e várias ONG’s, têm trabalhado juntamente com o governo para promover o desenvolvimento do sector agrícola no sentido de alcançar melhores níveis de segurança alimentar para o país e de reduzir a probreza nas zonas rurais.
A Fundação Jóvenes y Desarrollo está em Timor-Leste há vários anos, trabalhando com entidades e instituições locais para garantir a segurança alimentar de várias comunidades de agricultores do leste do território timorense.
Este trabalho apresenta um projecto implementado entre 2012 e 2013 e financiado pela Agência Espanhola de Cooperação Internacional para o Desenvolvimento, onde a Fundação Jóvenes y Desarrollo, em conjunto com a Escola de Formação Profissional de Fatumaca, intervieram numa região do distrito de Baucau, apoiando os agricultores de 14 aldeias, com o objetivo de aumentar a produção agrícola, melhorando a dieta e a segurança alimentar dessa comunidades rurais. Para isso, desenvolveram um conjunto de linhas de
acção: construção de um canal de rega; melhoria das técnicas agrícolas; distribuição de fatores de produção (adubos e sementes); introdução de novas espécies hortícolas e de espécies de animais domésticos para produção de carne (coelhos e patos).
Foram vários os factores limitantes que fizeram com que, no final do projeto, não tenha sido possível implementar uma parte significativa das linhas de ação.
Apresentam-se, por isso, as razões para não se ter conseguido atingir todos os indicadores inicialmente previstos e são formuladas algumas propostas de melhoria de atuação, com vista a contribuir para o sucesso de implementação de novos projetos.
The agriculture in East Timor is mainly subsistence farming. Since the year of your independence, in 2002, FAO and several NGO’s have worked with the government to promote the development of the agriculture sector to achieve better food security for the country and reduce proverty in rural areas. The Jóvenes y Desarrollo Foundation is in East Timor for several years, working with local communities and institutions to ensure food security in many farming communities of east timorense territory. This work presents a project implemented between 2012 and 2013 and funded by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development, where Jóvenes y Desarrollo Foundation with Escola de Formação Profissional de Fatumaca intervened in the district of Baucau, supporting farmers in 14 villages with the objective of increasing agricultural production, improving diet an food security of rural communities. To do this, they developed a set of actions: construction of an irrigation canal; improving farming techniques; distribution of inputs (fertilizers and seeds); introduction of new vegetable species and species of domestic animals for meat production (rabbits and ducks). There were several limiting factors that, with the end of the project, has not been possible to implement a significant part of the action lines. The reasons for the failure to reach all indicators that were initially planned and have formulated some proposals for improvement of performance in order to contribute to the successful implementation of new projects.
