Abstract(s)
Objectives: To evaluate the dentin nanoleakage of two experimental universal adhesive systems and two commercial universal adhesives in the Etch-and-Rinse and Self-Etch protocol. Materials and Methods: 24 healthy molar teeth were randomly divided into 8 groups (n = 3): 4 groups were used two commercial adhesive systems - FUT (Futurabond M + TM) and SBU (ScotchbondTM) and the remaining 4 groups were used two experimental adhesive systems - EM1 (with Bis-GMA) and EM2 (without Bis-GMA), in the Etch-and- Rinse and Self-Etch strands. The dentin surface was exposed, the adhesive systems were applied according to the manufacturer's instructions and blocks of 6-8mm height composite resin were built. The samples were cut into 0.7mm thick slices in a hard tissue microtome and the 3 central slices were selected for each group. All specimens were incubated in an oven at 37ºC for three months in distilled water. At the end of this period, the samples were prepared for the observation of nanoleakage by SEM-EDS and were dehydrated and fixed with silver nitrate. The statistical analysis of nanoleakage was carried out in SPSS using mixed linear models. Results: There are significant differences in nanoleakage between the studied adhesives according to the applied protocol (Etch-and-Rinse and Self-Etch). EM1 has less nanoleakage when compared to FUT (p <0.001) and SBU (p = 0.002) under any protocol. EM2 shows less nanoleakage when compared to FUT and SBU on the Etch-and-Rinse protocol (p <0.001). EM1 presents less nanoleakage when compared with EM2 only under the Self-Etch protocol (p <0.001). Conclusions: The experimental adhesive systems under study showed promising results compared to the commercial adhesive systems studied. After 3 months of aging, EM1 revealed the lowest rate of nanoleakage in both protocols (Etch-and-Rinse and Self-Etch) and with no differences for EM2 only when applied with the Etch-and-Rinse protocol.
