Abstract(s)
A Mulher, enquanto polícia, assistiu a uma mudança de comportamentos sociais historicamente enraizados. A Polícia, influenciada diretamente pela cultura patriarcal e tradicional da sociedade portuguesa, tinha a si associada a ideia de que se adequava como um trabalho de homens e não de mulheres. Ainda assim, a PSP foi a primeira Força de Segurança a integrar mulheres nas suas fileiras.
Atribuir um papel de destaque social a uma mulher, conferindo-lhe poder na sociedade, constitui numa necessidade de adaptação de mentalidades não só na sociedade como na própria Polícia. Perceber as condições que as mulheres encontraram nesta força de segurança, implica que se tenha em conta a cultura própria historicamente institucionalizada na instituição e no ato de policiar. A ideia das construções sociais que envolvem a Polícia influenciam a sua subcultura, onde as construções de género vigentes na sociedade resultam na masculinização cultural da mesma. O 25 de Abril de 1974 lançou as bases para que hoje a Mulher tenha asseguradas as condições necessárias para exercer os seus direitos em pleno estado de igualdade com os homens. A igualdade entre homens e mulheres assume-se, assim, como um pleno direito de uma sociedade democrática. Com a sua rápida ascensão histórica importa que se questione qual o papel reservado às mulheres numa polícia do futuro.
Women, as policeman, have seen a change in historically rooted social behaviors. The Police, directly influenced by the patriarchal and traditional culture of Portuguese society, was associated with the idea that it was a men’s job and not for women. Even so, the PSP was the first Security Force to integrate women in its ranks. Assigning a prominent social role to a woman, giving her power in society, establishes a need to adapt mentalities not only in society but also in the police force itself. Understanding the conditions that women have found in this security force implies considering the culture historically institutionalized in the institution and in the act of policing. The idea of the social constructions that surround the Police influence its subculture, where the gender constructions in society result in the cultural masculinization of the police force. The 25th of April 1974 laid the foundations so that today women are guaranteed the necessary conditions to exercise their rights in full equality with men. Equality between men and women is thus assumed as a full right in a democratic society. With its rapid historical rise, it is important to question what role is reserved for women in the future Police.
